2 Page 2 FATHER ALLAN S MESSAGE A BITTERSWEET GOODBY experiences with you as you entrusted the lives of your families to me. With all of my heart, I pray that I have been a faithful expression of God s love into your hearts and into your families lives and I ask for your forgiveness for all those times where I still had a lot to learn about how to do that. WHERE IT ALL STARTED Father Allan s ordination to the deaconate in June of 2011 By Father Allan Boyd There are many fond memories that Presvytera Danita and I have of our days here at Saint Sophia Cathedral. When I arrived in February of 2011, a bit fearful of what may lie ahead for us here, the welcome we received from Panos Angels (of blessed memory) and the rest of the Parish Council was an exceptional manifestation of God s love. That set the theme for the love we continued to experience from all of the rest of you as we continued on our journey here, learning how to appropriately care for our beloved parishioners as a new clergy couple. Father John Bakas has been such a gracious and selfless mentor (and at times even a protector a true shepherd), allowing me to be a meaningful part of so much, that I m sure that I will continue discovering for years to come just how much he s taught me. There has also been an overabundance of joy in the many opportunities Presvytera Danita and I have had to get to know so many of you, sometimes over coffee, sometimes over a meal and sometimes in my office, or participating in some ministry together or spending time in some class I was teaching. You and I have taught each other along the way and I feel as though, through those times with you, I was the recipient of the greatest blessings of learning. We have also struggled through a good number of storms together. Several of you have called upon me to come and pray for your loved ones as they drew near to their mortality and went on to be with the Lord. The strength and peace and comfort of your families was something that concerned me and became the focus of my prayers as you struggled with those losses. Some of you have called me to the hospital beds of your children as they struggled with serious illnesses, where I anointed them with oil and prayed for their healing. We have shed tears of struggle and tears of joy together and I am grateful for all of those His Eminence, Metropolitan Gerasimos has now appointed me as the new priest of Saint Basil Greek Orthodox Church in San Jose, CA, beginning on December 1 st. While I have always known that something like this would be expected of me someday (since Saint Sophia Cathedral is basically a training ground for new assistant priests who are eventually asked to move on), and while we are actually excited about the new opportunities for ministry and growth that lie ahead, this is a bittersweet time in our lives because we will be leaving behind so many of you who have become family to us. That s really tough for us, because we have come to regard you with such affection. We hope that some of you will have the opportunity to come and visit us in San Jose. Most of all, we covet your prayers for us that God may strengthen us and give us wisdom for the challenges that lie ahead in growing a small parish. With grateful hearts, we continue to pray for God s blessings upon all of your lives as you continue growing in Christ-likeness, working together to make Saint Sophia Cathedral, like that manger in a cave so many years ago, an ever more life-giving experience of the Kingdom of Heaven here on earth.

3 Page 3 PARISH COUNCIL MESSAGE XXXX Sunday, November 22 is set for a special free luncheon for all who attend. This day has been organized to recognize and thank Father Allan Boyd and Presbytera Danita for their Ministry, service, love and friendship. As they begin their new journey to Saint Basil The Great Greek Orthodox Church in San Jose, I encourage you to come, share a note of appreciation to thank them and wish them well. If you wish to bring a gift, you may do so. At the same time, we will also use this day to thank all of you who helped us with our annual Greek Fest. So many of you helped by volunteering to work, prepare and cook, supported it financially and helped us to realize a positive and successful event. Come hear how we did and join in celebrating another job well done! Wishes for a HAPPY THANKSGIVING are sent to all of you. May the joy, peace, and sharing that was shown to the Pilgrims from the American Indians be with you and your family and that you pass it on as they did. Share the horn of plenty with love in your heart. May your families get together and share the spirit of Thanksgiving, always giving thanks to God. St. Basil the Great shared this prayer: We bless Thee, O most high God and Lord of mercy, Who art ever doing numberless great and inscrutable things for us glorious and wonderful; Who grantest to us sleep for rest from our infirmities, and repose from the burdens of our much toiling flesh. We thank Thee that Thou hast not destroyed us with our sins, but hast loved us forever; and though we are sunk in despair, Thou hast raised us up to glorify thy power. Therefore, we implore Thine incomparable goodness: enlighten the eyes of our understanding and raise up our minds from the heavy sleep of indolence; open our mouth and fill it with Thy praise, that we may be able-without distractionto sing and confess Thee, Who are God glorified in all and by all, the eternal Father, with Thine Only-begotten Son, and thine All-Holy and good and life-giving Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen. Yours in Christ, Brent A. Noyes, Parish Council President

13 Page 13 SAINT ANDREW, THE FIRST CALLED By John Kopatsis Saint Andrew the Apostle (Greek: Ἀνδρέας), called in the Orthodox tradition Prōtoklētos (Πρωτόκλητος) or the Firstcalled, was a Christian Apostle and the younger brother of Saint Peter. The name "Andrew" (from Greek ἀνδρεία "manhood, valour"), like other Greek names, appears to have been common among the Jews and other Hellenized people of the region and no Hebrew or Aramaic name is recorded for him. Both he and his brother Peter were fishermen by trade. Jesus called Simon Peter and Andrew together in the Gospel of Matthew and Mark to become his disciples by saying that he will make them "fishers of men" (Greek: ἁλιεῖς ἀνθρώπων) Their weather-beaten faces and hands eloquently express astonishment, confusion and fear. Peter holds two fish skewered on sticks and starts back in surprise; His neck - strong, corded, thick, and his hands, one holding fish and the other held out in a gesture of...what? The choice is between Saint Andrew founded the See of Byzantium (later Constantinople) in AD 38, installing Stachys as bishop. This diocese would later develop into the Patriarchate of Constantinople. Saint Andrew, along with Saint Stachys, is recognized as the patron saint of the Patriarchate. The apostolic successor to Saint Andrew is Patriarch Bartholomew I, our current Ecumenical Patriarch. Saint Andrew was martyred by crucifixion at the city of Patras, Greece on the northern coast of the Peloponnese. He was crucified on a cross of the form called Crux Decussata (Xshaped cross, or "saltire"), now commonly known as a "Saint Andrew's Cross at his own request, as he deemed himself unworthy to be crucified on the same type of cross as Jesus had been. Relics of the Saint Andrew are kept at the Basilica of Saint Andrew in Patras, Greece; the Duomo di Sant'Andrea, Amalfi, Italy; Saint Mary's Roman Catholic Cathedral, Edinburgh, Scotland; and the Church of Saint Andrew and Saint Albert, Warsaw, Poland. In September 1964, Pope Paul VI, as a gesture of goodwill toward the Greek Orthodox Church, ordered that all of the relics of Saint Andrew that were in Vatican City be sent back to Patras. The cross of Saint Andrew was taken from Greece during the Crusades by the Duke of Burgundy. It was kept in the church of Saint Victor in Marseilles until it was returned to Patras on January 19, The relics, which consist of the small finger, the skull (part of the top of the cranium of Saint Andrew), and the cross on which he was martyred, are kept in the Basilica of Saint Andrew at Patras in a special shrine and are revered in a special ceremony every November 30th, his feast day. The Calling of Saints Peter and Andrew is a painting by the Italian Baroque master Caravaggio, taking its theme from the passage in the Gospel of Matthew describing the moment when Jesus called the two brothers to be his disciples. A young Jesus, unusually shown without a beard, gestures out of the painting in the direction in which he is moving, while turning back to the brothers, who have been fishing by the Sea of Galilee. The composition seems to imply that Christ will walk calmly off to the right, without looking back again, and that the other two figures, after a due period of astonishment and reluctance, will find themselves following. Detail of The Calling of Saints Peter and Andrew the fish and his livelihood, or the empty hands of the disciple who leaves it all and follows, and finds life. Peter's hand is at the center of the painting, and has a three dimensional effect - it is open, empty, the gesture of a reasonable man questioning an unreasonable command. Andrew points to himself incredulously. His hand is pointed at himself as if to say, Who? Me? And Jesus hands point to the future offstage, a gesture towards the unknown but travelling in the direction he points. The contrast between Christ s long, pale fingers and the weather-beaten hands with which these working fishermen, express their surprise, confusion and fear. The face of Christ and his hands are the most fully lit of the scene, while those of his disciples are in more shadow. It is only since 2006 that this painting is attributed to Caravaggio. Kept in the "Cumberland Gallery" in Hampton Court Palace, it was long believed to be a virtually worthless copy of a lost original, but after six years of restoration and examination the Royal Collection experts declared that this was, in fact, an authentic Caravaggio, worth more than $80 million. A thorough cleaning operation revealed new details that pointed to the Italian master. The presence of "incisions" into the ground of the canvas marking out St. Peter's ear and the eyes of Christ are typical of Caravaggio's technique. Also characteristic of his later work is the use of the priming color as a middle tone, visible in the completed work - in this case on the fingers of the figures, and between areas of color in Christ s greenish-blue drapery. The painting appears to date from the height of Caravaggio's Roman period, c
