This particular time I offer you information which can greatly influence the future of our Saint Sophia Cathedral. We have been entrusted with the stewardship of this truly great house of God. It is not only the crown jewel of our Faith in the Western hemisphere but is a lighthouse to the rest of the city of Los Angeles and all of Southern California. For most of my waking hours, the Cathedral is never far from my thoughts. I am blessed and privileged to be the Dean of our vibrant community and the Chief steward of our Golden Cathedral. With that in mind and constantly praying that through your generosity in all forms, we will protect and preserve this Holy Temple of the Lord till His return when we give Him an account of our stewardship. I have borrowed the following information from a June 10 L.A. Times article by Lew Sichelman titled Donating real estate offers gift-giver a double tax advantage. Actually, people give away real estate all the time. The Giving Institute in Glenview, Ill., estimates that $260 billion was contributed to churches, universities, museums etc. in The last year the information was made available roughly 25% of that was in real estate. Right now, vacation properties and rental properties are the most common real-estate gifts offered to us, said John McKee, director of gift planning at the University of Maryland in College Park. With diligence, these properties can be a great way to fulfill charitable goals, he said. Donors can give property either outright or by retaining life-tenancy rights. Why give your real estate away? Because you can deduct the full value of the property, including appreciation, on your incometax return. Yet you don t have to report the appreciation as capital gains. In other words, you get two benefits in one. It s hard to imagine a better tax-savings device, said, Mackenzie Canter III, a Washington, D.C. attorney who specializes in philanthropy law. Consider this possibility: You re in the top-tier, 35% tax bracket. You own free and clear a house worth $150,000, but you paid only $75,000 for it 20 years ago. Because you ve owned it for more than a year, it s considered a long-term capital asset. If you sold the place outright, you d have a capital-gains tax liability of $75,000 (assuming it was not your primary residence), and your tax liability would be 15% of $75,000, or $11,250. So the real liquid value of your property is $138,750, or $150,000 less $11,250. Now suppose you donate the house to Saint Sophia Cathedral Foundation. You d be entitled to a charitable-tax deduction of $150,000, and there would be no tax on the $75,000 gain. In your 35% bracket, the tax savings would be $52,500. So the net cost of making a charitable gift of your $150,000 property would be only $86,250 ($150,000 less your $11,250 tax liability less, your $52,500 tax savings.). Your gift is deductible only up to 30% of your adjusted gross income in the year it is made. But any contribution above that amount may be carried over for up to five more years. Furthermore, donating real estate also avoids the hassles involved with selling: no sales commission, no fix-up costs, no prospects traipsing through your place at all hours and, perhaps best of all, no haggling. If you need at least some cash out of the deal, consider what s known as a bargain sale. With this type of gift, instead of donating the property outright, you sell it to Saint Sophia Cathedral Foundation for something less than its full market value. That way, both parties win. You not only get a deduction, you also get some cash, and the Saint Sophia Foundation can sell the place and receive the difference between what it gave you and what it eventually gets for the house on the open market. Before signing over you property talk first with an expert in philanthropy law, or your financial planning advisor. 2 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE As June marks the mid year, allow me to thank you for your generous blessings in our stewardship program. It is your generosity and love for our Cathedral that make things happen and allow us to run all the ministries effectively and efficiently. A few days ago the Parish Council made several calls to our stewards. We received very favorable responses from those of you who were home and answered the phone. Thank you for your time and your valuable feedback. To be effective as a church ministry, we must work together in the spirit of humility; your requests will be honored. Many thanks to our great stewardship committee for their amazing effort. June began with an elegant celebration honoring our Foundation President Mr. John S. Sakellaris. It followed by the Greek school graduation along with Sunday school graduation. Congratulations to all the children for another year of religious and Greek language education. We are very proud of you, your parents and your teachers. We will see you in September for another year of challenge. On the last issue I reported that the Building Fund Committee is under the Chairmanship of Gig Kyriacou. The correct order should have been under the Chairmanship team of Mr. John Sakellaris, Mr. Angelo Pappas and Mr. Gig Kyriacou. Sorry for the confusion that I might have caused you. Please be aware that there is no parking across from the Cathedral on the street between 14th St. and 15th St. It has been designated Tow Away No Parking Any Time Zone. Your vehicle will be towed if you re parked there. My sincere appreciation and agape to Theo Kolokotrones family for establishing The Kolokotrones Family Endowment Fund with a contribution of $1,000,000.00! The endowment is to be created as a perpetual source of funds to support and maintain the Saint Sophia Cathedral structure and infrastructure. It is being created as a supplement to and not as a replacement for established and future fund raising activities. Efharisto Theophane and Wendy, you are the true friends of the Cathedral. During the hot days of summer, when most of you are vacationing, we are working very hard to prepare for our great L.A. Fest 2007 under the Chairmanship of the Fab Two Jan and Ted Pastras. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have contributed and those who have pledged to make our L.A. Fest the best. We need more supporters like you to fulfill all our needs. Congratulations to our new Pappou and Yiayia Fr. John and Presbytera Maria for their first grandson, Lucas! This issue of the Herald, as usual, is for the months of July and August. We are taking a short summer recess and we will resume publication again in September. John Priceless Visa advertisements aside, it is time to take a serious look at the Stewardship of our Cathedral. Have you made your pledge for this year? Have you thought about what your Stewardship pays for? The Stewardship goal for 2007 is: $ 750, Currently 498 people have pledged: $510, Pledging is important because it allows the Parish Council to know how to budget for programs throughout the year. Certainly, we can all appreciate the need to budget wisely. In addition to operating this beautiful Cathedral we have 28 ministries! Let s take a closer look One of the things your Stewardship money goes toward is paying for the lights, electricity, heat, and general maintenance of our beautiful Cathedral. Now ask yourself how much you spend each year just maintaining your house or your car. Now think about what the cost is for Saint Sophia. Sure, our family is larger. But look again to those numbers above. Our family is bigger than the number of people who have pledged anyone here at Anastasi (Easter) can tell you that. And of course, in the bigger picture it is about our community. Our services. Our philanthropy. We offer educational classes to both adults and children, sporting activities, summer camps, cooking classes, outing and field trips, a festival, networking, music, charity, neighborhood improvement, and so much more. Take a look at the web site or visit on Ministry Day and you are sure to be overwhelmed by the sheer volume of services we provide. Our volunteer base is magnificent and still there is much work to be done. And this isn t even counting the tireless and endless work of our much loved Priests and their weekly, indeed daily, inspiration. We are a community rich in fellowship, friendship, and love! Visa might be on to something. If you think about it, the money you give in Stewardship truly is priceless for it buys exponentially more than just a service or a thing. It sustains an entire community. So, why not make a commitment to give more to stewardship maybe even more than you pay in interest to credit cards it will be money well spent. 4 SAINT SOPHIA CAMP We have planned another fun-filled and enriching year and as always a program that continues providing programs that will teach our children about our Orthodox faith so that they may grow in spirituality and as individuals. Our unique camping atmosphere promotes Orthodox Christian Fellowship by bonding the youth of Southern California, creating life-long friendships and thereby increasing their interest and participation in church programs and ministries. Please encourage your young people to attend. This year, there will be two weeks of camp. Sunday, July 29 - Saturday, August 4; and Saturday, August 4 - Saturday, August 11. Saint Sophia Cathedral Docents Are you looking to serve the Cathedral in a unique way? We have a very dedicated group of parishioners who come faithfully one day a month for four hours to be hosts or hostesses for visitors who come to see the Cathedral. Saint Sophia Cathedral Docents perform a very worthwhile service. They welcome people, play an audiotape which informs the visitors about the iconography and history of our beautiful church, answer any questions they may have, and generally extend a very warm welcome to all who come. The reward for their service is that they meet very interesting people and also learn many things about our own faith. No special training is required. You will receive all the materials needed, and you will be partnered with another docent on the day of the month which you select to serve. Docents are needed Tuesday through Fridays, but you will only be assigned for one day each month. If you want to help our Cathedral by being a part of this group, please contact Faye Congratulations to one of our own! Mary Tassop, long time member of Saint Sophia Cathedral community, former Sunday school teacher, and a Philoptohos member, will be honored by Theta Chi Epsilon, Professional Women s Sorority, at their National Convention s Grand Banquet on Saturday, July 21 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Ventura, California. She will be recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award for 25 years of service, which include President of Zeta Chapter; Los Angeles Area Council President; National President and many chairmanships and other offices on all levels.
