1 Saint Sophia HERALD Volume 13 Number 7,8 Many Lives...One Heart July & August, 2008 Practical Spirituality Our faith above and beyond theological truth and facts is immensely practical and concerned with the whole person, body and soul. The Orthodox goal par excellence is the deification of man, his union through grace with Christ, and his attainment in this present life of the virtues of Christian perfection. For ultimately Orthodoxy is not expressed only in correct beliefs, doctrines or dogmas. It is lived and felt and experienced in personal ways. It is summertime hopefully most of us will get some vacation time, rest and relaxation. But within that context, let us reflect on these points of practical spirituality. We may take time off from work and business, but we can never take time off from God. 1. Make time for devotion and discipline prayer. They provide us with daily fuel for our busy lives. 2. Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day. Read the bible or inspirational Orthodox materials each day. 3. When you wake up in the morning, complete the following statement. My purpose is to today. 4. Live with the 3 E s - - Energy, Enthusiasm, and Empathy. 5. Play more games and read more books than you did last year. 6. Take a minute walk every day. And while you walk, smile, pray the Jesus prayer. It is the ultimate anti-depressant. 7. Spend more time with people over the age of 70 and under the age of Dream more while you are awake. 9. Try to make at least three people smile each day. 10. Clear clutter from your house, your car, and your desk, in doing so you unclutter the spirit. 11. Don t waste your precious energy on gossip issues of the past, negative or evil thoughts or things you cannot control.instead invest your spiritual energy in the positive present moment. 12. Realize that life is a school and you are here to learn. Problems are simply part of the curriculum that appear and fade away like algebra class but the lessons you learn will last a lifetime. 13. Try and pay an honest compliment to someone you wouldn t normally. 14. Life isn t fair, but it s still good and you re blessed. 15. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone. 16. Don t take yourself so seriously. No one else does. 17. Make peace with your past so it won t spoil the present. 18. 2 20. Frame every so-called disaster with these words: In five years, will this matter? 21. Forgive everyone for everything, and you will be forgiven. 22. What other people think of you is none of you business. 23. However good or bad a situation is, it will change, by the grace of God. 24. Your job won t take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will. Stay in touch. 25. Get rid of anything that isn t useful, beautiful or joyful. 26. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need. 27. The best is yet to come. 28. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up. 29. Do the right thing. 30. Call your family often. God gave them to you for a reason. 31. Each night before you go to bed complete the following statement. I am thankful for. 32. Remember that you are too blessed to be stressed. 33. Go to church every Sunday. Lift up your heart, praise the Lord, and be filled with His Holy Spirit. He is the giver of every good and perfect gift. In Christ, Fr. John PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Let my people to my home The month of June 2008 will live in infamy; it brought us memories, nostalgia, recognition and pride. After months of planning, hard work, sleepless nights, eleventh hour decisions and taking care of every detail, the 100th Anniversary Committee under the brilliant and elegant leadership of co-chairs Vicky Zaferis Ambatielos and Timi Loomos Freshman, produced a truly memorable event, Sentimental Journey - Honoring the Past, Celebrating the Present and Envisioning the Future. Your hard work, ladies, is like that of your parents and you are commended for all you have done. BRAVO and HRO- NIA POLLA. I am very proud to be able to thank you and congratulate you for our Centennial Historical Celebration. The celebration started in the Los Angeles City Hall with the City Council declaring the first week of June 2008 as Greek Week and officially naming the original site of the Annunciation Church on San Julian Street HISTORICAL. A few days later, we all boarded the buses that transported us through the Downtown Los Angeles original Greek Town. We ended up on San Julian Street where we were greeted by Councilwoman Jan Perry. She officially revealed the sign that declares the site of the Annunciation Church Historical. Thank you Jan and Ted Pastras for all the arrangements. Last Sunday, June 22nd, we were supposed to have held the semi annual General Assembly, a very well publicized event. Due to a lack of a quorum, we were unable to conduct any formal business. Instead, we had a very informative meeting; several reports were presented, and we followed the Agenda without taking any votes or making any decisions for the future. Those in attendance enjoyed a light luncheon, provided by the Parish Council, and we answered several questions that were presented to us. The next General Assembly is scheduled for November 30th, I hope to see you all there so we can approve the Budget for the year Please mark your Calendars. We just finished the 2nd quarter for this year. Summer is upon us and with that the vacation season starts. Please remember that our work and that of the Fathers does not go on vacation. Our Stewardship commitment is behind expectations and money is coming slower than projected in the budget. Our mailing list has eleven hundred members and with the complimentary list, we are well above fifteen hundred. This year ONLY 421 members have fulfilled their obligations; and there are another 1000 that we are asking to come forward to share the joy of giving. Thank you for your support.

We have planned another fun-filled and enriching year and as always a program that will teach our children about our Orthodox faith so that they may grow in spirituality and as individuals. Our unique camping atmosphere promotes Orthodox Christian Fellowship by bonding the youth of Southern California, creating life-long friendships and thereby increasing their interest and participation in your church programs and ministries. The Saint Sophia Camp Committee is looking for highly motivated, responsible and enthusiastic young adults, over 18, to be camp counselors this summer. The first week is scheduled from Sunday, July 27th through Saturday, August 2nd; and the second week will be from Saturday, August 2nd through Saturday, August 9th. There will be a $100 stipend, per week, offered to counselors. We will be holding camp this summer at Camp Seeley which is located in the San Bernardino Mountains. 6 COMMUNITY NEWS PHILANTHROPIA MINISTRY NEWS Canned Goods and Used Clothing: As always, we are in need of usable used clothing they are taken to a number of rehab centers for men and women; to battered women with children; and to downtown missions. The canned goods go to special missions, e.g., a rehab center for teens and young adults that prepare them to gain work skills for employment. The needs of the less fortunate are always before us, so please continue to bring your good used clothing for men, women and children...and those precious canned goods. Please deposit both at the back door of the bookstore. Computers: The gift of your old computers is given, if workable, to young teens so they can acquire the skills to be more prepared in their high school computer classes. Of course, laptops are also welcomed. Currently, we are looking for a reliable computer that has a DVD setup for Father Peter s office. Keep those usable computers coming. Please place them behind Father Peter s desk in the bookstore. Annual Appeal: Thank you so much on behalf of all those people we help during the year. If you have not had a chance yet to send your gift, please do so--it is never too late. Get On The Bus : Thank you so much for your support to this project with your help we were able to send $1, to help sponsor a bus again this year, taking children to visit with their moms who are incarcerated on Mother s Day. All were equal in their contribution to this once in a lifetime event. We most especially thank Vicky Zaferis Ambatielos and Timi Loomos Freshman who as co-chairs of the event coordinated the over all program. In thanking them directly for doing an absolutely superb job, we are thanking the entire committee and scores of other volunteers who made everything possible and so successful. Our Saint Sophia Community is extremely blessed with the loving labors of spirit filled Orthodox Christian volunteers. Without them the successful ministry of our cathedral would not be possible. May God bless you all for being such tireless workers in His vineyard. Our forefathers and mothers smile upon you and on all that has come to pass since that early group of pioneers formally signed the charter on June 14, 1908 establishing our Los Angeles community.
