For everything? Really everything? Yes everything! We are to praise and thank God constantly, in all circumstances (1 Thessalonians 5:18), at all times and for everything (Ephesians 5:20), always asking God with a thankful heart (Philippians 4:6). In whatever crisis we find ourselves we are not alone for all the resources of God in Christ are at our disposal. God s unfathomable love for us, especially as it is made known through the redemptive life and death of Jesus Christ, takes the coal dust of our lives and turns them into diamonds. The hopeless dry holes of fear become with prayer and patience well springs of sweet and life sustaining water. It is fitting that this month of thanksgiving we all take the time to recall our individual life journey s which seem as though we have been riding a rollercoaster of spirituality and emotion. Thanksgiving Day essentially continues to be a day when people come together and yes!... count their blessings. It is a day when we cast our eyes back over the past to contemplate the courses of our lives are taking. With all the proclaimed clouds on the financial horizon we must also see rainbows. What special blessings have touched our family. What staircases of hardships and suffering have we climbed? Those who live close enough or can afford a trip feel tugged back to their families at Thanksgiving as at no other time of the year. Perhaps this is because we need the warmth and perspective of our family to measure how much we really need to express our thanksgiving to God from whom flows every good and perfect gift. Indeed. 2 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE And the work of generosity shall be PEACE and the effect of generosity will be QUITNESS and SECURITY for EVER Isaiah 32:17 Christian Stewardship is the essence of living our precious Faith that teaches each of us to return to the Lord a portion of our earnings so that the Church may continue to grow. Every Orthodox person may be a parishioner, but a Steward is a person who understands his or hers responsibility to God and to their Church. This understanding directs us to live according to the teachings of our Faith and at the same time, offers time, talents and treasure to the sacred work of the Cathedral. We are in the last two months of the year 2008; only a few days are left and I encourage you to fulfill your Stewardship commitment to the Cathedral. We sincerely thank EVERYONE who contributed and participated in our 2008 Stewardship Ministry. As of September 30th, 2008, we received $510, from 615 members (499 have pledged and paid and 126 have paid but NOT pledged) This amount represents only 1/3 of our total goal to formulate the budget; it is imperative for ALL the Parishioners to PLEDGE, because without your pledges, we CANNOT operate. It is easy to see that we need your help to achieve our goals; we pray that you can find it in your heart to give cheerfully and without reluctance to the sacred work of God s Holy Church. We encourage you to prayerfully evaluate your budget when making your commitment. The economic times are affecting everyone, but we must remember to continue our support to the Cathedral. USA data shows that in recessions since 1967, religious giving has a very small drop of 0.1%, in comparison to education giving that has fallen on the average by 1.9%; this indicates that Stewards put their Church FIRST, and I pray that you do the same. On behalf of the Parish Council and the Stewardship Committee; I pledge to work closely with all active Stewards and be an advocate of the Parish Council s vision and purpose. We will develop and follow communications and Stewardship plans. With plans it is easier to stay focused and maintain momentum. It is also easier to divert resources that do not produce. We will focus our efforts to THANK our donors, RECOGNIZE their contributions, and let them know of the accomplishments they have made possible. We will maximize the use of fundraising tactics available. This can include thank you calls made by volunteers, on-line giving options, information about planned giving, and effective parishioners public relations. We will provide EXCELLENT Stewardship accountability so that all our donors will know their funds have been put to good use. 2 Corinthians 9:6-15 But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work. 3 THE BIBLICAL AND LITURGICAL (HOLY KISS) IN THE DIVINE LITURGY I m sure you have noticed in the Divine Liturgy that prior to the recitation of the Nicean Creed, the celebrating priests in the altar turn to one another in a holy and brotherly embrace and say: CHRIST IS IN OUR MIDST. The response is: HE IS AND ALWAYS SHALL BE. When there are a number of priests celebrating, all in the proper order, including the Bishop if he is present, the same holy greeting and embrace takes place. Unfortunately, the congre-gation only stands and watches. Yet they don t realize that greeting one another in the name of the Lord is also intended for all. St. Paul in his second letter to the Corinthians ends it by saying: Become complete. Be of ood comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you. Greet one another with a holy kiss St. Paul makes this reference in his Epistles a number of times, as does St. Peter. The early church made this exchange of the greeting of peace, a regular liturgical practice. It has been re-introduced in the Church in the last few decades and many of our parishes practice this greeting with the blessing of our Metropolitan Bishops. Simply put parishioners turn to one another and to those in the pew in front and behind them, lovingly shake the hands of their neighbor and say CHRIST IS IN OUR MIDST. The response is HE IS AND ALWAYS SHALL BE. The simple healthy touch of love and encouragement of a fellow parishioner is spiritually healing and encouraging in our life s journey. Christ, our Lord touched and healed. He often touched the untouchable. And He was touched by those who needed new life. He would say: Who touched me? This exchange of the holy greeting is not a Protestant or Catholic innovation. It has always been part of our Orthodox church. We ve just forgotten or abandoned it. The great St. John Chrysostom (+407) said: Let the love of your fellow man rise above the promptings of self love. Do not turn away your face from him So this is all about the expression of love for one another. The Liturgy proclaims: Let us love one another, that with one mind we may confess. Without love we cannot confess Christ. In the coming weeks I intend to introduce this greeting of peace and love to the congregation. It will be phased in slowly and on a timely basis, as the Holy Spirit leads. No one should feel uncomfortable about this. It will not be done by force. Let me know what you think. This kind of expression of love will infuse our community with a renewed spiritual vitality. Fr. John S. Bakas

4 Dear Philoptohos Ladies: PHILOPTOHOS Autumn is upon us and we want to report that our Evening Meeting on October 16th was very interesting, with Dr. Maria Kootsikas speaking about flu shots and other very important vaccinations. The Debutante Committee is headed by Katrina Beers, an untiring, organized and fantastic worker in the vineyard of the Lord Bless you, Katrina! Her outstanding committee leaders and members have already accomplished a lion s share of work to make the 2009 Debutante Ball the most beautiful and successful ever. We will be presenting nineteen young women on January 31st, We have already held the Debutante Luncheon for these young women and their mothers. It was very well attended truly a beautiful event full of information for everyone. We are getting ready for our Thanksgiving Celebration, which will be a meeting and luncheon on November 20th. Maria Props will be showing her beautiful jewellery and boutique items for your early holiday shopping. Please note that the November evening meeting has been rescheduled for November 12th, instead of the 13th. It will be held at 6:30 PM at the Parish Hall on Wednesday, November 12. Once again I would like to remind you that whoever would like to join our board must attend four meetings during this year. We are looking for eligible women to participate in next year s election. Next year s election is in May The board is a great opportunity to participate and guide the works of Philoptohos, and it is a great honor to be elected to the board. Mary worked so diligently for the Festival. Although she was in Greece during the summer, before she left she conducted two classes to teach the new volunteers how to make galaktoboureko. Not only did she do that, but she also prepared and baked twenty pans of delicious Karidopita that was sold out at the Philoptohos pastry booth on the very first day of the Festival! After we will be going to Knott s Berry Farm. The Bible Bowl is a Pan-Orthodox team competition. We will be studying the material every week in Dean & Christina Peratsakis Sunday School class. It is composed of people like me. We make it what it is. I want it to be a church that is a light on the path of pilgrims, leading them to Goodness, Truth and Beauty. It will be, if I am. It will be friendly, if I am. Its pews will be filled, if I help to fill them. It will do a great work, if I work. It will bring other people into it, worship and fellowship if I bring them. It will be a church of vision, loyalty and love, or fearlessness and faith, if I, who make it what it is, am filled with these. Therefore I dedicate myself to the task of being what I want my church to be.

7 Saint Sophia Camp Program Golf Tournament Allan Wilson Honored On Friday October 17th, the 46th annual Camp Program Golf Tournament was held at Montebello CC. Over 80 golfers participated and there were more than 130 for the dinner which honored Allan Wilson and his family. It is important to recognize that while we have not had our own facility for the past four years, the Camp Program has continued successfully in another venue. The Program is alive and well!! We need the continuing support of the community to provide this wonderful and enlightening experience to our Greek Community young people. This year 259 children were involved in the Program, and over 20 of these were provided scholarships enabling them to enjoy an experience they otherwise could not afford. The Tournament Committee is a dedicated group of members of the Saint Sophia community. Without their selfless commitment, these children and the Camp Program would be in jeopardy of continuing. There are too many to mention here but I am grateful to them all and wish to thank Dean Treantafelles, Georgia Vasila, Dan Kirages, Dan Lubian, Ted Lambros, Melanie O Regan, and Tony Dimitriou whose years of service are what makes it all happen. Please remember to be involved as a golfer, donor and supporter of this worthwhile Program that teaches our young people their Hellenic Culture, their Greek Orthodoxy and as importantly, provides them a forum to build the lifelong friendships and relationships that form the future of the Greek Community. Please join us for this special presentation. BOOKSTORE NEWS Many thanks to Larry and Alexandra Hughes for directing our bookstore these last few years. We very much appreciate their loving labor to keep this vital ministry going and active. But with a new baby arriving soon, caring for their beautiful little daughter and other obligations, we gave them a break. To pick up where the Hughes left off, we are pleased to announce that the new volunteer director of our Saint Sophia Bookstore will be William Striglos. William is known to most of us, as he is a Cathedral docent and serves in the Holy Altar during weekday services and special holidays.
