Reader: The Reading is from Acts of the Apostles 11:19-30 Priest: Let us be Attentive... IN THOSE DAYS, those apostles who were scattered because of the persecution that arose over Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch, speaking the word to none except Jews. But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who on coming to Antioch spoke to the Greeks also, preaching the Lord Jesus. And the hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number that believed turned to the Lord. News of this came to the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch. When he came and saw the grace of God, he was glad; and he exhorted them all to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast purpose; for he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a large company was added to the Lord. So Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul; and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church, and taught a large company of people; and in Antioch the disciples were for the first time called Christians. Now in these days prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. And one of them named Agabos stood up and foretold by the Spirit that there would be a great famine over all the world; and this took place in the days of Claudius. And the disciples determined, every one according to his ability, to send relief to the brethren who lived in Judea, and they did so, sending it to the elders by the hand of Barnabas and Saul. 5

6 GOSPEL READING The Reading is from The Gospel of St. John 4:5-42 At that time, Jesus came to a city of Samaria, called Sychar, near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Jacob's well was there, and so Jesus, wearied as he was with his journey, sat down beside the well. It was about the sixth hour. There came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give me a drink." For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. The Samaritan woman said to him, "How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria?" For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked him and he would have given you living water." The woman said to him, "Sir, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep; where do you get that living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, and his sons, and his cattle?" Jesus said to her, "Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst; the water that I shall give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw." Jesus said to her, "Go, call your husband, and come here." The woman answered him, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, "You are right in saying, 'I have no husband'; for you have had five husbands, and he whom you now have is not your husband; this you said truly." The woman said to him, "Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. Our fathers worshiped on this mountain; and you say that Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship." Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for such the Father seeks to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth." The woman said to him, "I know that the Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ); when he comes, he will show us all things." Jesus said to her, "I who speak to you am he." Just then his disciples came. They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but none said, "What do you wish?" or, "Why are you talking with her?" 6

7 GOSPEL READING (continued) So the woman left her water jar, and went away into the city and said to the people, "Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?" They went out of the city and were coming to him. Meanwhile the disciples besought him, saying "Rabbi, eat." But he said to them, "I have food to eat of which you do not know." So the disciples said to one another, "Has anyone brought him food?" Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of him who sent me, and to accomplish his work. Do you not say, 'There are yet four months, then comes the harvest'? I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see how the fields are already white for harvest. He who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together. For here the saying holds true, 'One sows and another reaps.' I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor; others have labored, and you have entered into their labor." Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman's testimony. "He told me all that I ever did." So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. And many more believed because of his word. They said to the woman, "It is no longer because of your words that we believe, for we have heard ourselves, and we know that this is indeed Christ the Savior of the world." 7

9 MINISTRY NEWS PHILOPTOHOS NEWS SHOES FOR HOMELESS CHILDREN PROJECT: Our Philoptohos is spearheading a drive with the FOCUS group to get one new pair of athletic shoes to homeless children registered in the Los Angeles Unified School District, two times a year. There are 60,000 children registered as homeless in the Los Angeles schools, more than any other city in the United States. They live in cars and they live on the streets. Focus has put us in touch with a major shoe manufacturer that will be donating all of the shoes. Our chapter is going to be volunteering and working at the warehouse/ storage facility sorting shoes for the deliveries. We will be having more activities for this major project throughout the year. If you are interested in helping and joining in the work, you may call the church office and leave your phone number for Judie Christopoulos. Thank you! PENNIES AND PRAYERS: Our Pennies and Prayer s collection is taking place currently in the Sunday School Classrooms, as well as in the coffee hour foyer at the welcome table. Pennies n Prayers is a group developed by Metropolitan Gerasimos to start new mission parishes and help them become self sufficient. If you wish to donate, please send a donation with your children to Sunday School or you may leave it at the office marked for Philoptohos Pennies and Prayers. Donations should be received before the end of May. We look forward to another busy, hard working and fun filled two years. Philoptohos will continue to work with Father Bakas and Father Boyd, the Parish Council and the Trustees to move ahead and have our Cathedral continue being the lighthouse on rocky shores for those who need us. 10 MINISTRY NEWS PHILANTHROPIA Cristos Anesth! Christ Is Risen! THANK YOU: Thank God we are back home after nearly nine weeks that our family was displaced in a hotel because of damage to our home. We thank all of you for your prayers and well wishes, especially to the dear ladies of the Philoptohos chapters for their kindness in words and actions. ANNUAL APPEAL LETTERS: The response from the Annual Appeal letters mailed prior to Christmas is awesome! Thank you for your support and contributions thus far. Please send in your donation, if you have not already done so, in order that we may honor our commitments to our projects. Thank you so much! USED CLOTHING and CANNED GOODS: Thank you for all the generous donation of used clothing during the holidays and beyond. This is a yearlong project, so please continue your donations as there are still many we need to reach. Please identify all clothing donations on the outside of the bags by indicating whether they are for men, women or children. The two new receptacles for "used clothing" and "canned goods" are working great. They are located side by side, in the general area of the nursery. Thank you! GET ON THE BUS: This project is in full swing of collecting monies so that we may sponsor a bus again this year. Exact times and dates are forthcoming but will be observed on Mothers Day and Fathers Day respectively. We will keep you posted as the day approaches. Thank you. THE WALL-LAS MEMORIAS PROJECT: We continue to support Richard Zaldivar, Executive Director, in their quest to achieve the same goals we have for continued AIDS education, awareness and prevention. STREET OUTREACH: Thank you to everyone who has donated so far. To date, more than $1, worth of items have been collected and distributed to the abandoned children in the outreach for the Children s Hospital of Los Angeles. Dr. Nikos Stefanidis, Ph.D. a Staff Psychologist at Children s Hospital, L.A., is the Clinical Director of this High Risk Program. 11 MINISTRY NEWS PHILOPTOHOS VIP CRUISE IN NEWPORT BEACH HARBOR Thursday, June 27, 2013 Plan to join us on a beautiful and fun cruise around the harbor of Newport Beach. After the cruise we'll be having lunch at Harborside Restaurant overlooking the bay. We can then visit the Maritime Museum and shop at the various boutiques around the Peninsula. The cost of the trip is $40.00 per person and it includes the cruise, the food and the bus. Be at church at 8:30am as the bus will be leaving shortly after that. Nine different designs in sterling silver with gold overlay, these affordable crosses have been blessed at the tomb of Christ in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. They are truly very special crosses. 13 MINISTRY NEWS Pentecost Vespers Celebration - Sunday, June Let us rejoice together as we celebrate the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives and worship the Holy Trinity. Join us for Vespers and take some time to reflect on the many blessings we receive from God. The strength we draw from the Holy Spirit allows Him to dwell in and work through us. We will kneel in prayer for the first time since Holy Week. 19 For those who are sick or suffering St. James advises us, If anyone among you is sick, let him call for the elders of the Church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. (James 5:13-14) Ensuring that St Sophia s parishioners continue to be cared-for and prayed-for, please list names below of those in our midst that need prayer.
