As it is written, "He scatters abroad, he gives to the poor; his righteousness endures for ever." He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your resources and increase the harvest of your righteousness. 7 GOSPEL READING The Reading is from Luke 7:11-16 At that time, Jesus went to a city called Nain, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him. As he drew near to the gate of the city, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a large crowd from the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, "Do not weep." And he came and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, arise." And the dead man sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother. Fear seized them all; and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has arisen among us!" and "God has visited his people!" 7

8 PHILOPTOHOS NEWS MINISTRY NEWS Our first meeting was a great deal of fun and very informative! Tina Russek from the Los Angeles Mission gave a wonderful talk about the Mission and what they do. We will be starting a Cheerios and Coffee drive again to help with their morning breakfast service. We will be accepting your donations starting October 21 st the day of our next Philoptohos General Assembly Meeting! The Mission does NOT receive any government funding; it runs strictly on private donations. Last year we had a very successful collection and I know we can do it again. Next time you are in the store and there s a sale on Cheerios or coffee or you have a coupon please think about picking up an item to help those who show up at the Mission for breakfast. We are joining our Sunday School in Operation Christmas Child, sponsored by Samaritan s Purse. This project makes shoebox Christmas gifts and they are delivered all around the world to children in poor, impoverished countries. The project is starting today in the Sunday School classrooms where the teachers will be handing out shoeboxes to the children. You can use a shoebox from home or purchase a plastic one in a store and fill it for either a boy or girl with appropriate gifts inside. Some ideas to include are: lollipops, Slinky toys, playing cards, yoyo s, a doll, hair clips, hair brush or comb, a bar of soap, a toothbrush, well use your imagination. Please label the top of the box boy or girl. (Please no chocolate or liquids). We will have someone stationed near the front of the church to collect your boxes starting October 14 th. This is a wonderful project that spreads the word of Christianity to the children who receive the boxes on Christmas. The Bishop Anthony Student Aid Endowment Fund Luncheon will be held in the Huffington Center at St. Sophia on Saturday, November 17th. Invitations from the Metropolis Philoptohos are forthcoming. This is a VERY important event for the Metropolis, as it raises funds for young men from our Metropolis to attend the seminary. Our Philoptohos is the host chapter this year. All the money goes to the Endowment Fund. Please make an effort to join us. There will be a beautiful Christmas Boutique, lovely Christmas Trees up for raffle and a performance by the Citrus College Singers who will entertain us with gorgeous holiday musical selections. His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos will be in attendance. Plans are in full motion and underway for our Debutante Ball on January 20, 2013 at the Beverly Wilshire Four Seasons Hotel! 9 MINISTRY NEWS (continued) PHILANTHROPIA NEWS PHILANTHROPIA TEAM BOARD MEETING: A notice was ed to the Team Members - Sunday, October 21st, we will have our annual Board meeting, immediately following Divine Liturgy, in the St. Constantine Chapel. Please plan to attend this very important meeting. Thank you! USED CLOTHING and CANNED GOODS: This is a year-long project, so please continue your donations as there are still many we need to reach. Please identify all clothing donations on the outside of the bags by indicating whether they are for men, women or children. Father Peter ******************************************* National Church Music Ministry Sunday Today, our parish community observes National Church Music Ministry Sunday. It is celebrated in October, on the Sunday closest to the feast day of Saint Romanos, the Melodist (October 1st). On this day, we recognize women and men who have heard and responded to the Lord s invitation to be church musicians: parish chanters and choir singers. As church musicians, these people represent the laity in the liturgical dialogue of our worship services. In glory to God, the Holy Trinity, they commit themselves to learning the hymns of our Orthodox faith, understanding the sequence of our liturgical worship, and actively offering their prayers in song to enhance the beauty of our worship. We ask each of them, and our congregation as well, to be mindful of the special ministry they fulfill in singing the hymns of our faith and leading us to worship. 11 MINISTRY NEWS (continued) Single Orthodox Urban Link and Prime of Life Orthodox Singles In an effort to be of service to all members of our community, SOUL and POLOS have been formed to create a central beacon in our community to bring together all the single, unattached members of our community. SOUL is basically directed at the late 20 s 30 s 40 s and young 50 s Orthodox Singles. POLOS is designed for persons that are 50 plus. This is done in an effort to choose events and excursions that would appeal to each group. We invite you to attend the group in which you would feel most comfortable. You are most welcome to attend events in both groups as you will be welcomed with open arms in either group. We are planning on having several types of events such as hiking, birthday dinners, movie nights, and general dining in either a small group of six people or a large dinner as a group. As we are all busy professionals, we try to schedule our events 3-4 weeks in advance, and if you are interested in attending our events, please call or RSVP as we would like to have an approximate head count. 14 Ignite the Flame of Faith by attending adult Christian Education. On Tuesdays, Fr John Bakas teaches a Women s Class at 10am. He also offers a Men s Class at 11:30am, with fellowship to follow. On Mondays at 7:30pm, Fr Allan Boyd teaches a Catechism of the Orthodox Faith for inquirers, which many veteran Orthodox Christians still find highly edifying. On Thursdays at 7:30pm, Fr Allan leads an Introduction to the Stories of the Old Testament. In it we amplify the overall story of God s love for His beloved people. Join us, in any of these classes to deepen your friendships with other Orthodox Christians & to ignite the flame of your Faith in our Lord. PLEASE NOTE Access to the Huffington Center Maniatakos Fellowship Hall will be limited to Noon - 2:00 pm on Sundays. Those who arrive earlier than that are welcome to join us in church for the Feast of Feasts in the Divine Liturgy. Coffee hour will begin immediately after the Divine Liturgy and the Sermon, at dismissal. The Cathedral Parking Lot will always be closed by 2:30 pm on Sundays. Those who wish to go across the street after Liturgy for further fellowship and lunch should insure that their car does not get locked in the Cathedral parking lot, as our guard is scheduled to leave at 2:30 pm. To those who believe in the Scriptures, no evidence is necessary To those who do not believe, no amount of evidence is enough!! 14

15 For those who are sick or suffering St. James advises us, If anyone among you is sick, let him call for the elders of the Church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. (James 5:13-14) Ensuring that St Sophia s parishioners continue to be cared-for and prayed-for, please list names below of those in our midst that need prayer.
