5 EPISTLE READING The Reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 11:31-33; 12:1-9 BRETHREN, the God and Father of the Lord Jesus, he who is blessed for ever, knows that I do not lie. At Damascus, the governor under King Aretas guarded the city of Damascus in order to seize me, but I was let down in a basket through a window in the wall, and escaped his hands. I must boast; there is nothing to be gained by it, but I will go on to visions and revelations of the Lord. I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven-whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows. And I know that this man was caught up into Paradise-whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows-and he heard things that cannot be told, which man may not utter. On behalf of this man I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my weaknesses. Though if I wish to boast, I shall not be a fool, for I shall be speaking the truth. But I refrain from it, so that no one may think more of me than he sees in me or hears from me. And to keep me from being too elated by the abundance of revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan, to harass me, to keep me from being too elated. Three times I besought the Lord about this, that it should leave me; but he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." I will all the more gladly boast of my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the selfish. Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful."

8 MINISTRY NEWS Today is National Church Music Sunday This recognition is commemorated throughout the Archdiocese on October 3rd, the Sunday nearest the feast Day of Saint Romanos the Melodist, patron saint of church musicians. The Archdiocese recognizes the service of all choir singers, chanters, Sunday School music teachers, youth choir leaders, organists and choir directors on this day. Please thank our wonderful choir members for their time, talent and commitment to Saint Sophia. Adult Greek Language Classes Classes began yesterday, Oct. 2nd (11:45 am). We are still accepting student registration. Hellenic Academy offers 4 levels for adults: BEGINERS traditional teaching to ADVANCED through singing, music, and musical instruments. Adult students can register by contacting Eleni Dumas Questions? Please call the Cathedral office (323) Sunday School - Fall 2010 Sunday School classes began last month. If your child is not yet registered, you may log into our website and register today online: saintsophia.org - click on Youth and then Sunday School. Saint Sophia Bookstore & Gifts The book store has received some great Orthodox books for teenagers, children and young adults. There are new Bibles, books on Lent and interesting books about the saints. Please come by and check it out this month before we close for construction!

9 MINISTRY NEWS (continued) Greek Folk Dance Greek Dance Registration Deadline is Sunday, October 10th Please us the following link to the registration form and fill it out a soon as you can. Please note the requirements and fees for each dancer Adult Dancer Registration. Students in 12th grade and lower are required to fulfill the "Teaching our Faith" part of our program by attending our Sunday School at least 8 times before the Folk Dance Festival begins. Class starts at 11:30 following Holy communion. A Sunday school schedule will be ed to all parents. The fees for dance are as follows: $140 for St. Sophia Members in good standing (current stewards) $200 for Non-members $100 for additional competitive dancers $75 for Exhibition Dancers $75 Recreational dancer Please give a check made out to St. Sophia Cathedral and give it to our Dance Committee. You also must print out the Medical release form and have a legal guardian sign it and give it to us as well. If you are over 18 years old, you can sign it yourself. Saint Gerasimos of Kefallonia Banquet The annual Saint Gerasimos of Kefallonia Benefit will be held on Saturday, October 16 th at Saint Katherine Greek Orthodox Church in Redondo Beach. Adult tickets are $35 per person, young adults 16 years and under are $10 per person. A complete dinner with appetizers and dessert will be served with proceeds to support Saint Gerasimos Church in Kefallonia, Greece. The evening s events begin with a Paraklisis in the church at 6:30pm, followed by dinner and dancing in the church hall at 7:30pm. 14 Congratulations to our very own Kenyatta Smith!!! Top Recruit, Kenyatta Smith, Commits To Harvard Published by Dennis J. Zheng on September 18, 2010 at 9:53PM The Crimson confirmed today that men s basketball coach Tommy Amaker has secured a verbal commitment from 2011 big man Kenyatta Smith. The No. 13 center in the nation according to Scout.com, Kenyatta Smith, a senior at Flintridge Prep School (La Canada Flintridge, Calif.) chose Harvard over Vanderbilt and league rival Penn. It was just a great visit. I love the campus; I love the people, everything just beautiful, the 6'8, 255-lb Smith said while in attendance at the Crimson football team s opener against Holy Cross Saturday night. I thought about [visiting other schools], but I ve been to Penn before. I saw the campus and everything, and I just didn t feel the connection that I did here, Smith said of his first visit to the area. I just love Boston as a city. Smith sounded unfazed by Harvard s lack of long-standing men s basketball success. We haven t had a lot of history of winning, but that s what I want to be a part of, Smith said. I want to start a history of winning, a tradition. I want to be there when that first happens and I know it s going to happen. It s coming soon, and I want to be a part of it. Giving Amaker a much-needed front court boost, Kenyatta joins Minnesota forward Jonah Travis in the Crimson s future class of Prospects Andre Hollins, Spencer Dinwiddie, and Steve Moundou-Missi also took in the football game
