1 Saint Sophia HERALD Volume 10 Number 5 Many Lives...One Heart May, 2005 THE DEAN S MESSAGE RESURRECTION POWER St. Paul writing to the Christians in the church at Ephesus tells them that he has been praying that they would begin to be aware of the exceptional and immeasurable greatness of the power which was at their disposal through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. This same resurrection power is at our disposal today. We need to be aware of what God can do in our lives if we would but allow Him to release His awesome resurrection power in us. But resurrection power does not only speak of raising the physical body from the cold grave, but resurrection power gives life to those who are spiritually cold and dead. And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins. Eph.2:1. When Satan saw Christ affixed to the cross he and his demons danced with glee. They felt that they had finally put the Son of God through His greatest trial and had stopped Christ dead cold. Satan threw everything he had into keeping Christ down; keeping Him in agony, pain suffering and loneliness the death on the cross. But his efforts were futile. You cannot keep the God-man down. There are those even today who wish to do so, by their cynicism, doubt and disbelief. A theology professor at a well known theological school once said that on Easter Jesus just swooned on the cross and that the disciples nursed him back to health. A student replied, Beat someone with a hook tipped leather whip for thirty-nine heavy strokes. Nail him to a cross. Hang him in the sun for six hours, run a spear through his heart. Put him in an airless tomb for three days. Then see what happens. The last enemy that has been destroyed is death. 1 Cor: 15:26. Jesus destroyed death by enduring it. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? This is so true that even Satan cannot deny it. Christ s resurrection and victory over sin, death and hell is greater than all heaven and earth. You can never imagine his resurrection and victory as great but actuality it is ever far greater.. There is not a lost person alive who can truthfully say that he is living a happy, victorious, and fulfilled life. He doesn t have the essential ingredient for a victorious life. There is a void in humankind which can only be filled by Jesus. Without Jesus, life is never at its best. Many believers live victorious lives in their own strength and let the risen living Lord take over and live the victorious life through them by His resurrection power. Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not, but Christ lives in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. It is the resurrected Christ living in us that gives us the strength to live victoriously. It is with true confidence that we can say: CHRISTOS ANESTI! In Christ, Fr. John Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral V. Rev. Fr. John S. Bakas, Dean - Rev. Fr. Alex Chetsas, Associate 1324 S. Normandie Avenue -Los Angeles, CA Tel Fax

2 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Christos Anesti! Pascha has finally arrived and our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ is truly risen from the dead. Holy Week was a wonderful culmination to Lent. Beginning with Palm Sunday, our Cathedral was overflowing with parishioners of all ages. Our Orthodox services were beautiful and very meaningful. Our Dean, Fr. John, and priests, Fr. Alex and Fr. Peter conducted the services with fervor and respect for the Holy Resurrection of our Lord. The Cathedral Choir was magnificent, singing like gifted songbirds, as well as our talented chanter, Menelaos, who beautifully sang the Easter hymns in the Byzantine tradition. Our Altar boys were in dutiful attendance and the pallbearers and myrrh bearing girls gave light to the decorated Epitaphio. The Parish Council and Associate Ushers welcomed our parishioners in a most gracious manner and Jimmy Karatsikis, our ever efficient sexton, held it all together as a thread through a golden fabric. On Holy Saturday night, we were also honored to have with us our new Metropolitan Gerasimos. This was the Metropolitan s first official visit to our Cathedral. Metropolitan Gerasimos s words during the Resurrection Liturgy were moving and inspirational. It was a very special evening for all of us. Everything ended on the brightest of notes with the handing out of our traditional Easter eggs. Thank-you to our ladies of Philoptohos for dyeing all the eggs. Metropolitan Gerasimos also stayed for our Saint Sophia Paschaliatiko Paniyiri which was held on the grounds of the Cathedral. It was a wonderful celebration. All those who participated were able to meet Metropolitan Gerasimos in person. A big thank-you to Stephanie Caiopoulos Lubian and her committee (Dan Lubian, Ann Pappas, Karen Sarames, Katia Bakas, Eleni Constantine, Panos Angels, and Helene Liatsos) for planning and implementing a perfect day for us-with outstanding music, delicious food, and an exciting children s arcade of games and activities. This coming month of May, our Ladies of Philoptohos and our community will be honoring Sophie Mastor as the Mother of the Year at the annual Mother s Day luncheon. I hope that you will attend. It is a charming event and a fun day to spend with one s mom! Parish Council is always in the process to achieve a smoothly run Church operation while promoting new programs to enrich our Christian lives. Safe Landings is a new ministry at the Cathedral. This new ministry will endeavor to embrace all those individuals who are new to our church and those individuals who are seeking to learn more about our orthodox faith and doctrine. I would like to remind everyone to please save the date, June 12, for the next Parish General Assembly. More information will be forthcoming in the next few weeks. In closing, I wanted to share these words from Archbishop Demetrios ( -- As we have reached the end of our blessed Lenten journey and have opened our hearts to receive the light and life of our Lord Jesus Christ, we are called once again by the divine worship and commemorations of the Holy Orthodox Church to contemplate the significance of Pascha for our lives. The celebration of the Resurrection of Christ is not only an annual observance marked by special services, family gatherings, and feasting. As the people of God, we continuously commemorate this day each and every moment of our lives through the presence of the Risen Lord within us. The Feast of Pascha affirms that the Risen Lord is in our midst. Each and every day, through all the joys and trials of this life, He is with us. Christos Anesti! In Christ s Service and Love, Loula B. Moschonas - Saint Sophia Parish Council HUMAN INTEREST STORY Well-deserved honors for Dr. Michael Patzakis! On Tuesday, April 5th, Dr. Patzakis was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University Of Athens School Of Medicine, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of Orthopedics in the U.S. and Greece. Specifically, the chair of the Dept. of Orthopedic Surgery of Athens University cites Dr. Patzakis fine leadership and support of young Greek scientists and the academic growth they have displayed under (his) excellent guidance. In our community, Dr. Patzakis is well-known for going the extra mile for all of us when we are in need; his stewardship of love does not stop at the gates of St. Sophia. Obviously, his love and outreach extend beyond all borders, and we are very proud and blessed to have him as a member of our St. Sophia family. Congratulations, Michael! Axios MINISTRY OF THE MONTH ALTAR SERVICE St. Sophia altar service is open to Orthodox Christian boys who would like to learn more about our divine services and serve as helpers to our priests. Participants, of all ages, must possess a sense of reverence, respect and an eagerness to learn and serve. Altar servers are led by adult volunteers. Periodically, our altar boys take trips to events such as Dodger games and fun spots such as Knott s Berry Farm. Those interested please call Michael Cosfol at Thank You Eleni Yokas! CHURCH SCHOOL The Easter Egg Hunt for the Sunday School at the Easter picnic was a huge success. Children from the ages of 1 through pre-teens had huge smiles on their faces as they hunted down every last chocolate filled egg on the Cathedral lawn. This is a very timeconsuming task, and well-appreciated by our children. Thank You. Godparents Sunday - May 22 Please mark your calendars as our annual Godparents Sunday event is fast approaching. We will hand out special invitations to our Sunday School children so they can invite their Godparents to attend Liturgy and our Annual Bible Jeopardy game.

3 THE FAMILY FESTIVAL May 2005 PHILOPTOHOS Chistos Anesti! Every man according as he purposed in his heart, so let him give: not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loves a cheerful giver. II Corinthians 9:7 Giving comes in different forms and I am truly grateful to all of you for your continuous generosity. With every phone call or or when I see someone in person, the conversation always ends with Count me in for the festival! The bigheartedness of our community is my blessing. We are well on our way with the planning of the festival. Suppliers have been contracted, vendors are lined up, the bands have been booked, the banners have been ordered the festival committee is amazing! One of our many marketing opportunities will take place on May 22nd at the Los Angeles Sister City International Festival in the gardens of the Page Museum. Our participation in the LA-ATH- ENS booth will give us maximum exposure to promote our own Greek Festival. Saint Sophia s Award Winning Dance Group TRIKIMIA, will be performing! I do hope that you will all attend admission is free and you will enjoy a wonderful afternoon experiencing over 20 different cultural booths filled with arts and crafts, music and food. Read about all the details in this month s Herald. St. Sophia Cathedral has become official members of the Greater Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce and the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. This will enable us to promote our festival citywide directly to individuals and companies who just might enjoy coming to our LA Greek Fest! The Ralph s Community Giving Program has taken off like a rocket - it could only lead to bigger and better opportunities to fundraise for our beloved Cathedral. Thank you all for calling in your Ralph s Card number! There are many ways to serve the Lord. The growth in the number of ministries established is proof of how all of us find our own niche in serving Him. A community-wide supported festival, where we all work and play together, allows us to continue the work He asks of us. It is my belief that we serve Christ, as we serve one another. Thank you all for your continued support. Doing His Work, Helene K. Liatsos Festival Director 2005 We hope you ve made plans to join us for a spectacular afternoon of fellowship and entertainment at our Cherished Memories Mother s Day Benefit Luncheon on Saturday, May 7th, at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel. KIDS n CANCER This year s fundraiser for Kids n Cancer will be held on Sunday, May 15th at the beautiful home of Georgia and Nikiforos Valaskantjis. Our newly enthroned Metropolitan Gerasimos will be with us. We know we can count on you once again. Please refer to the flier in this HERALD for information and directions. We were deeply touched by the remarks of our guest speaker Michael Huffington at April s General Assembly. Mr. Huffington outlined his personal path to Orthodoxy and enlightened us as to what it means to be Orthodox. His inspiring testimony was an ideal prelude to Holy Week and the celebration of the resurrection of our Lord. Many, many thanks to him for sharing his insightful journey with us. The delicious gourmet lunch at the April meeting was prepared and donated by Ann Pappas, and the floral centerpieces were donated by Bebe Paul. These ladies extended this generosity in loving memory of their mothers. Our sincerest appreciation and thanks to them. The Women s Health and Wellness Seminar originally scheduled for June has been postponed until early Fall. Information will be forthcoming. Next General Assembly and Elections: Thursday, May 19th at 10:30 a.m. in Fellowship Hall. (This will be our last General Assembly until September.) In His service, Connie Cooper President

4 Dear Philoptohos Friend, Our warmest wishes for a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year. As we begin our 2005 Philoptohos Membership/Stewardship Drive, we wish to express our heartfelt thanks to our devoted Philoptohos members and ask new members for their support and contribution to our philanthropic mission. Philoptohos is the philanthropic arm of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America with 30,000 members and 475 chapters. Our fundraising events and membership drives provide the funds for our philanthropic work locally and nationally. Because each chapter forwards a portion of your membership dues to the Metropolis and National offices, your contribution not only supports the charities of our chapter, but also the Metropolis and National charities. As a result, through the donations and membership dues from each chapter, the National Philoptohos Donations disbursed to charities for the fiscal years were over 2.9 million dollars. In the past $7.50 out of your $30.00 membership dues was forwarded to Metropolis, $7.00 to National, and $15.50 remained in our chapter. This year, the National office has increased their Aportion to $10.00 per member, which will automatically decrease our portion to $ In order for us to effectively support our local charities, we are regretfully forced to increase the minimum membership dues from $30.00 to $35.00 per member. We can only pursue our philanthropic mission through your support and generosity. Please take a moment to complete the form below, and send your donation in the enclosed envelope. 13 AN EASTER PICNIC THANK YOU!!! Our Easter Picnic was truly successful this year. I would like to thank all of the members of the Executive Picnic Committee who volunteered their time and energy towards the success of our event: Thank you Loula Moschonas, our parish president, whose labor, support & organization skills were invaluable. Thank you Ann Pappas who secured and managed the food vendors, ordered food and pastries, secured the necessary licenses, secured the umbrellas for the round tables, ordered paper goods for the booths, provided the delicious Tsoureki that was distributed at the picnic, and managed the clean-up effort. Thank you Katia Bakas and Eleni Constantine who secured the band, Greek dance groups and the children s rides, organized the electrical set-up, designed & distributed the picnic flyer, secured food and rides tickets, decorated the grounds with balloons and decorated the tables with Easter baskets full of the traditional red Easter eggs. Another thank you to Katia and Eleni who worked all day replacing the volunteers who did not appear for their shift in the various booths. And a special thank you to Katia who was invaluable during the Easter morning set-up. Thank you Karen Sarames who helped me with signing up volunteers and who worked with Ann Pappas on setting up the booths with their supplies. Thank you Panos Angels, who reserved the 3 mini vans, met with the police for the security, secured the liquor license, and secured a medic to be on hand. Thank you Dan Lubian who worked with the tent rental company at 3am after Resurrection to begin the all night task of setting up the booths, tents and tables. In addition to the executive picnic committee, the following people helped in various aspects of this event: Thank you Helene Liatsos for securing the sanitation company, and for all of the guidance and expertise as we worked in concert on issues that pertained to both the picnic and the upcoming festival. Thank you Ted Pastras for securing the city permits required for street closure. Thank you Lee Ingraham for securing insurance coverage. Thank you Tony Demetriou for managing the bank during the picnic, and to his team, Jim Demetriou, Pete Fettis, Tom Moore, George Preonas, and John Sakellaris, who assisted him. Thank you Connie Cooper and the Ladies of Philoptochos for baking many of the delicious pastries, and for selling them in the Pastry Booth. Thank you Keith Strong for helping with the generator set-up, the booth signs and for your expertise regarding church grounds logistics before and during the picnic. We could not have done it without you! As you can see, this event required a lot of man & woman-power and we thank the 70 additional people who worked in the Admissions, Beer, Coffee, Dinner, Gyro, Loukoumades, Pastry, Soda and Ticket booths during the picnic. We pray that all who attended our lovely event enjoyed themselves. Christos Anesti! Christ has truly risen on us! Stephanie Caiopoulos Lubian Easter Picnic Chairperson
