3 St. Mary on the Hill January 26, 2014 On Saturday, February 1 st, area 8th graders have the opportunity to take the high school placement test at Aquinas. For many St. Mary on the Hill families, enrollment at Aquinas is a given, for that is where the parents and possibly even grandparents were educated. Others see it as a natural progression from St. Mary on the Hill School. However, for some families, Aquinas is an unknown that just happens to have a huge football following and a plethora of Irish Nation yard signs scattered throughout town. Maureen Lewis Corner Let me share with you why I believe an Aquinas education is so much more than that. OPPORTUNITIES - Aquinas affords students a myriad of opportunities to stretch themselves: academically, artistically, and athletically. Students may choose from a selection of college prep, honors, and AP Courses. Test scores are significantly higher than area public schools and on par with the best private schools in the area. Knowledgeable, caring teachers are there to guide students. In the words of an Aquinas alum who recently graduated from UGA, The faculty at Aquinas pushed me to do better than I thought possible. Their encouragement and high expectations followed me to college and helped me to succeed in difficult classes. This year s seniors have already been accepted to nearly every top school in Georgia and South Carolina, including UGA Honors Program, Georgia Tech, Clemson Honors College, USC Honors College, Mercer, UVA, Catholic University, Rice and Stanford. We are awaiting word from UNC, Notre Dame, Wake Forest, Harvard and MIT. Eight Aquinas grads are currently attending college on athletic scholarships in football, baseball, and soccer. After school, students head off to drum corps, Model UN, Spring Musical practices, and nearly every competitive sport imaginable! Here they learn to win, to lose, and to work together as a team; they also build friendships that will last a lifetime. FAMILY Once a student walks through the doors the first day of school, he immediately becomes part of the Aquinas family. That means that he doesn t have to eat lunch alone; that he will not be bullied at school; that he has a spot in the student section at sporting events; and therefore, will likely begin wearing a lot of green! It also means that there are caring adults and students to lean on during difficult times and to help celebrate victories whether on a calculus test, on the stage, or even on the playing field at the Georgia Dome! FAITH Rigorous daily instruction in religion classes develops students understanding of the Catholic Church and its role in our lives. Students study Scripture, theology, Christian art/architecture, morality, philosophy, writings of the Doctors of the Church, and more. (I am not alone in saying that I wish time would allow me to go back and retake each of the religion classes at Aquinas.) But we do not stop there. We pray together three times each day, attend all-school Mass monthly, and participate in service projects throughout the year. We build on the foundation that parents have established, teaching about the dangers of relativism and the dignity of human life from conception to natural death. Public schools must avoid these topics, and many private schools shy away from them; we embrace such discussions. CHARACTER Today s culture bombards teenagers with messages along the lines of If it s good for me, it s good. In a Catholic school, adults are free to point out the fallacies and encourage the development of character to withstand outside forces. Students study the lives of the saints and discuss the philosophies of life contained in Ecclesiastes and Job and Song of Songs. Wouldn t it be great if your son or daughter brought these topics home from school for further discussion? If this sounds like the environment where you would like your teenager to build relationships and further develop his mind, body and spirit, come see us. There is always room for more in our Irish Nation. If you have any questions about financial aid or admissions requirements, call us at to set up an appointment or tour. Until then, check out our website at It s a great day to be Irish! Maureen Lewis 84, Principal Fr Jerry s Notes 1. If you d be interested in a pilgrimage to the great Catholic Shrines (St. Katharine Drexel Shrine, St. John Neuman Shrine, the Miraculous Medal Shrine) of Philadelphia plus a day at the world famous Philadelphia Flower Show guided by Fr. Jerry, please call the office this week and let Martha know of your interest. Dates of the trip would be February 27 to March 4 and would be limited to six people. 2. Small groups are an opportunity to reach out to others, while growing in your walk with the Lord. They can be a source of friendship and support. Our faith community is blessed with a good number (I m thinking more than I am aware of) of such groups and I d hope we could be a little more intentional in promoting them in our parish. If you are the point of contact or leader for such a group could you the parish office, smoth@knology.net, with a description of your group (bible study, social, support, book club, catechism, lectio divina, etc.), who is it for (Men, Woman, Everyone, Youth, etc.), when do you meet, where do you meet, etc. Thank you. On the Way Home: In the gospel today Jesus asks us to Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. How can you make a change or a new beginning today in some area of your life that will bring you closer to God s kingdom?
