3 St. Mary on the Hill June 22, 2014 They tell me that it is summer time and the living is supposed to be easy. But I am still just trying to catch up. So, forgive me if I cheat a little with this week s FJC and simply use some of the notes that I shared in this past Wednesday s Lunch Talk. This month my talk was on Pilgrimage. Yes, I am shamelessly trying to promote my pilgrimage to the Shrines of Italy. Next month the talk will be on How to stay Catholic in College. It will be a talk not only on the challenges that young people face in living out their faith but the challenges that we all face. So, all are welcome to join us for lunch and a talk on July 16 th at noon in the Parish Hall. Pilgrimage What is it? The thing that distinguishes a pilgrimage is what s in your heart. A pilgrimage is a spiritual journey, one guided by the heart and the spirit. It can be described as a faith journey, an inner journey, a change of heart, a search for God. While we may associate the word pilgrimage with specific religious events and travels, it is in the bigger picture a life s journey back to God. A Christian s entire life is a pilgrimage. In fact, we speak of our Church as a pilgrim Church. A pilgrimage is but one more expression of our passage from birth through life and back to our Father. It is what we celebrate in the Eucharist each time we come together as a Christian community. What is at the heart of your own faith journey? You don t need to go to a foreign land to make a pilgrimage. There are ways to practice the spirituality of a pilgrimage that are much closer to home: Following in the footsteps of Saints and Missioners - We can be inspired by visiting the sites where holy people lived or where they are buried. A few years ago I made a journey to Colyer, Kansas to visit the grave of my Uncle, Msgr. Carl Engbarth. In California, I ve visited the missions that dot the coast of southern and central California. In Florida you can visit the first Marian Shrine in the U.S., the Shrine of Our Lady of La Leche in St. Augustine. In my home town of Philadelphia you can visit the Shrines of St. Katherine Drexel and St. John Neuman. And my confessor, Fr. Peter Clarke reminds me that folks can make a pilgrimage by simply crossing the river and paying a visit to St. Edward, the Confessor Church in Murphy Village. in front of the Church there is a shrine to Blessed Ceferino, a Spanish gypsy who refused to renounce his Catholic faith and while still holding his rosary, was executed by a firing squad on this August 9, Blessed Ceferino was beatified in Walking the Labyrinth - The labyrinth is an archetype, a divine imprint, found in all religious traditions in various forms around the world. One can be found in our Church parking lot on the site of the old Catholic Social Services building. By walking a replica of the Chartres labyrinth, laid in the floor of Chartres Cathedral in France around 1220, we can rediscover a long-forgotten mystical tradition. It is believed that this maze originated in the medieval period as an alternative to pilgrimages to the Holy Land or Compostela. The labyrinth has only one path so there are no tricks to it and no dead ends. The path winds throughout and becomes a mirror for where we are in our lives. It touches our sorrows and releases our joys. Walk it with an open mind and an open heart. Three stages of the walk: 1. Purgation (Releasing) ~ A releasing, a letting go of the details of your life. This is the act of shedding thoughts and distractions. A time to open the heart and quiet the mind. 2. Illumination (Receiving) ~ When you reach the center, stay there as long as you like. It is a place of meditation and prayer. Receive what is there for you to receive. 3. Union (Returning) ~ As you leave, following the same path out of the center as you came in, you enter the third stage, which is joining God. Each time you walk the labyrinth you become more empowered to find and do the work for which God created you. Stations of the Cross - Simply following the Stations of the Cross in our church may remind you of your own path to the Father. If you re a teacher or parent, bring your children along and explain what the Stations of the Cross mean. The RCIA - Who might you invite to journey deeper into the mystery of who God is? Invite a friend, co-worker, or relative to join us at Sunday Mass. Invite them to come and see how we experience God s great love. And then come September offer to journey with them as they search for God in and through the Rite of Christian Initiation. On the Way Home: This Sunday is the Solemnity of Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. As Catholics, our greatest prayer of thanks is the Mass. Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist. When we receive Communion, we say Amen; that is, we believe that the bread and wine are now the Body and Blood of Christ. What do you thank God for today? In what way did you experience Jesus present at Mass today?
