3 St. Mary on the Hill July 14, 2013 This past Friday, July 12, one of our parishioners, Margaret Peg Roch Polonus, celebrated her 100 th birthday. Though slowed down by a series of strokes Peg is still full of life. She is the widow of Harold Polonus with whom she raised eight children in Pittsburgh, PA. In 1999 Peg moved to North Augusta to be closer to family. She presently lives next door to her daughter, Susan Mucha. Congratulations Peg!!!! May your years continue to be filled with peace and happiness. If you would like to send a greeting, her address is 510 Berckman Rd., Augusta, GA And since it is summertime and the livin is supposed to be easy, this week I am going to take the easy way out of preparing this corner and rely on a very excellent homily that Fr. Avery delivered on the Fourth of July. He may be a newly ordained priest but I think we are very blessed because he already has shown great skills as a preacher: Today is the fourth of July, a day of parades, speeches, fireworks and back yard barbecues. But most of all it is a day of celebrating our Independence; an independence which was won and is maintained by the sacrifice of many lives. We are celebrating an Independence that is not absolute. Adam, the first man, thought that he had Absolute Independence and we are still suffering from the effects of it. Only God has Absolute Independence. Our Independence is dependent on God. We are dependent beings. A created being as an independent creature is an impossibility. That is why the First Commandment is also the greatest Commandment. Only if we are completely dependent on God can we enjoy freedom. Either we are dependent on God or we will be dependent on some creature. This dependence on God is clearly stated in our Declaration of Independence. It begins like this, We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, and that they are endowed by their Creator with inalienable rights And it ends with a firm reliance on Divine Providence we pledge our lives, our fortunes and our honor Our nation was founded on belief in God. The President takes his oath of office by placing his hand on the Bible, the Word of God, and ends with, So help me God. In our pledge of allegiance we say, One nation under God. Engraved on our money is In God we trust. Our Congress has a chaplain, begins each session with a prayer and provides for chaplains for the Military. Our Founding Fathers may have opted for a separation of Church and state but not for a separation of God and state. There is no brotherhood of man without the Fatherhood of God. The division of life into the sacred and the secular is a false dichotomy. There is not now, there never was and there will never be the purely secular, that is, anyone or anything which is not dependent on God. What the Constitution guarantees is not freedom from religion but freedom of religion the freedom to practice religion. The irony is that those who are pushing for freedom from religion are actually pushing their own religion their own agenda, which is secular humanism. In secular humanism, the Supreme Being is man who is greedy, lustful, and proud. These Supreme Beings are the creators of what they desire and they are creating individualism, corruption, addictions, war and terrorism. There is nothing more inhuman than secular humanism. In 2001 on September 11 th, the illusion that we were absolutely independent went down in smoke and ashes with the Twin Towers. On that day as our vulnerability weighed us down, we fell to our knees and asked God for help. And in so doing realized how far we had wandered from God and from the convictions of our Founding Fathers. So as we celebrate this Mass this morning on this Independence Day, let us accept that even though, it is our Independence Day, we are dependent on God; let us open our hearts to God and accept his grace and guidance so that we may truly be able to follow our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ the true source of independence. My brothers and sisters may these words add to your hearts the richest of God s blessings and Happy Independence Day!
