3 St. Mary on the Hill April 24, 2016 The Joy of Love is the title in English of Amoris Laetitia, which is Pope Francis follow-up document to the Synod on the Family. In it the Holy Father wants to find the balance between being unambiguously clear about the Church s beautiful teaching on marriage, sexuality, and family life and the compassionate application of that teaching, especially with those who have struggled to understand that God s ways are the pathways to true love. The Seventh Chapter of the Pope s Exhortation concerns the education of children in these matters. It is a chapter that I am studying thoughtfully in preparation for a Parish meeting this Tuesday evening as our faith community forms a new Family Life Ministry. In this chapter the section on education in sexuality is very expressively entitled: Yes to sex education. Obviously, more than ever the need is there, and the Holy Father asks if our educational institutions have taken up this challenge... in an age when sexuality tends to be trivialized and impoverished. And while he recognizes that Parents rely on schools to ensure the basic instruction of their children he states that they can never completely delegate the moral formation of their children to others. So the initial question that will be asked at Tuesday s meeting is how can our parish better support our parents as the first teachers of their children in the ways of faith? In a confused world that has lost touch with objective truth, how can we help ourselves and our children rediscover the peace and joy of living a life that is inconformity with the Divine Order? In his blog, Labyrinthine Mind, which can be found at Fr. Pablo Migone asks What has the Pope given us in Amoris Laetitia? It is a good place to start to get a sense of the beauty and the challenge of the Church s teaching on Family Life. I ll share the second half of Fr. Pablo s summary in next week s bulletin. I am hoping for a good turnout of parents for the meeting on Tuesday night. Read this and if you have time before the meeting, I d encourage you to go on-line and read Chapter 7 of Amoris Laetitia. What has the Pope given us in Amoris Laetitia? by Fr. Pablo Migone. The best way to answer this question is to read the document. Its length may sound intimidating, over 250 pages, but the pages are brief. Here is my take on what the Pope has given us. 1. The Pope has given us a rich, brief, and accurate catechesis on marriage. Drawing from Scripture and theological reflection, which includes John Paul II s Theology of the Body, he presents us with a beautiful Christian understanding of marriage. He writes of the primordial divine plan clearly spoken by Christ himself, Have you not read that he who made them from the beginning made them male and female? (AL, 9). 2. The Pope has given us a compassionate picture of the challenges marriages have always faced, and in particular the challenges they face in the modern age. These include: extreme individualism, the fast pace of life, stress, narcissism, pornography, immaturity, consumerism, overpopulation fears, decrease of faith life, loneliness, lack of proper housing, extreme poverty, media influence over children, migration, unrealistic high expectations, births out of wedlock, the mistreatment of women, ideology of gender, parents tired from work, families not sharing common meals, addiction to television, drugs, and the threat of many distractions. When considering the many challenges faced by families today, the Pope writes, perfect families proposed by deceptive consumerist propaganda do not exist. In those families, no one grows old, there is no sickness, sorrow or death Consumerist propaganda presents a fantasy that has nothing to do with the reality which must daily be faced by the heads of families (AL, 135). 3. The Pope has given us, in his words, a dose of self-criticism in the way we present our Christian beliefs regarding marriage. It is necessary to find the right language, arguments and forms of witness that can help us reach the hearts of young people, appealing to their capacity for generosity, commitment, love and even heroism, and in this way inviting them to take up the challenge of marriage with enthusiasm and courage (AL, 40). Rather than imposing rules by sheer authority when it comes to marriage, we must present a convincing, inviting, and motivating understanding of marriage that will attract young couples to marriage. He notes that oftentimes the procreative dimension of marriage overshadows its unitive dimension when the sacrament is discussed. He believes that at times we have proposed a far too abstract and almost artificial theological ideal of marriage, far removed from the concrete situations and practical possibilities of real families (AL, 39). 4. Pope Francis has given us a clear understanding that same-sex unions may not be equated with marriage. No union that is temporary or closed to the transmission of life can ensure the future of society (AF, 52). Later in the document he writes, as for proposals to place unions between homosexual persons on the same level as marriage, there are absolutely no grounds for considering homosexual unions to be in any way similar or even remotely analogous to God s plan for marriage and family (AF, 251). The Pope does emphasize that every person, regardless of sexual orientation, must be respected with dignity, avoiding any kind of discrimination including any kind of aggression or violence. On the Way Home: In the Gospel today, we heard that at his Last Supper, Jesus gave his disciples a new commandment: love one another. What are some of the ways that you live out that commandment?

A quick an easy, secure way to make a one time gift or pledge from a credit card or direct debit is through the following link - Catholic Home Missions Appeal The Catholic Home Missions Appeal will take place this week. One way that this appeal works to strengthen home mission dioceses in the United States is by funding seminarian formation in poor dioceses. The blessing of seminarians places a financial burden on these dioceses, where educating each seminarian costs $35-40K per year. Your support is needed for these young men so that they might go back and serve their parishes. Please strengthen the Church at home. Part of our tithe next week will be for the Catholic Home Missions Appeal.

9 AROUND THE DEANERY, DIOCESE, & THE AREA Human Trafficking The National Council of Catholic Woman s (NCCW) is focused on fighting the scourge of human trafficking. Several local Council of Catholic Woman (CCW) chapters are working in conjunction with the NCCW to help save the lives of these vulnerable American children trapped in the scourge of slavery. Children here, in our parish area, are being trafficked! This horrific practice can include prostitution, pornography, domestic servitude, factory work, migrant farming and mining. Please join us in fighting this crime by joining our volunteer group. We have developed a diocesan-wide committee using the internet and go-to-meeting to inform leaders in the parishes at a distance about the reality of human trafficking and how we can work to end it. It is built on the NCCW model but anyone who is interested in this important issue can join the group by making the contact with Joyce Piersanti at Jpiersanti@aol.com.
