3 St. Mary on the Hill August 31, 2014 Labor Day calls to mind an important Catholic teaching. The teaching ultimately is that each human being possesses a dignity stemming from the divine creation of each individual person in the image and likeness of the divinity. No one, be it government, the culture or another person, can ignore or qualify this dignity. Indeed the Church has taught that, if this dignity is affected by unfair or abusive conditions, or if it is affected simply by the turn and twist of a free economy, then the civil authority -- or the government to be precise -- has not only the right, but also the duty to intervene in behalf of the individual person. The following two articles I think are indicative of a Catholic understanding of the importance of Labor Day: US Conference of Catholic Bishops release 2014 Labor Day Statement The chairman of the US bishops Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development, Archbishop Thomas G. Wenski, stated that the 2014 Labor Day Statement focuses on unemployment among young adults. For those fortunate enough to have jobs, many pay poorly. Greater numbers of debt-strapped college graduates move back with their parents, while high school graduates and others have less debt but very few decent job opportunities, wrote Archbishop Wenski. Pope Francis has reserved some of his strongest language for speaking about young adult unemployment, calling it evil an atrocity, emblematic of the throwaway culture, he noted. The full text of the 2014 Labor Day Statement is available online in English: Duquesne University raises minimum wage to $15.00 Pittsburgh s Duquesne University raised its minimum wage to $15 an hour for its lowest-paid workers. The increase effective July 1, affects about 100 non-contract workers. According to a summary on the National Catholic Reporter web site (Aug. 12, 2013), the university has a workforce of about 2,100 including about 1,600 full time and around 500 part-time employees. This will only impact those who are already at the bottom of our pay scale. Lifting the minimum of course means lifting the bottom, Charles Dougherty, university president, told NCR. Everybody got a raise this year. But nobody got the kind of raise that the people who were making minimum wage got. According to the NCR report, the major influence on raising the minimum wage was the Congregation of the Holy Spirit, also known as the Spiritans, a Roman Catholic religious order that emphasizes outreach to the poor and those who are in marginal situations, according to Dougherty. So when we do our strategic planning, and think about what we are as a university and where we re heading, we always bear that in mind; that shapes our view of our pay scale. And some more reflections by our teens of their experience of this summer s Steubenville Youth Conference: I believe I became closer to God this trip than I have ever been. I think that this trip was the best I have been to so far. I love how we had Mass every day, and all the talks I was able to connect with. ~ Rita Smith This is my first Steubenville conference and it was truly an amazing experience! I left Orlando with a new relationship with God, and an open mind as to what God is calling me to do. -- Hannah Cundey, 10 th grade My experience at Steubenville was very exciting and thrilling! I now feel clean and more knowledgeable about the relationship between God, the world, and us humans. I became closer to the St. Mary s youth group and met some very cool people. I also love singing with the thousands of other Catholics. I had a fantastic time and would love to go to Canada next year! Jessica Tran, Senior This trip was absolutely amazing! The music was great and the host of the whole thing was hilarious. I can t believe we fed people by helping out! The workshops were good too. Let s go to Canada next year! Mary Jo Wisner The Steubenville trip was great- I got to make new friends and grew closer to God. I would not mind going back to Orlando next year. Elliott B., 10 th grade The trip was awesome! I love the conference and really thought I grew closer to the Lord. The speakers are great and all of their talks really hit home. I also enjoyed meeting new friends and hanging out with people I already knew. Billy C., Senior My location to the priesthood and His church was confirmed on the trip! ~Anonymous On the Way Home: In today s gospel why does Jesus call Peter Satan? What are your crosses and who are your Peters?

We often forget this stewardship wisdom when we spend all of our time, talent and treasure to gain more of the world s riches. We need to set our priorities based on God s values and not the values of the material world.

Your donation is not due until March 2015 at the earliest. This is a very popular scholarship program in support of Catholic Education. It is available throughout the entire State of Georgia. Historically, Catholic Schools in the metro Atlanta area have received the vast majority of the benefits of this program. It is a competitive process because Georgia has placed a $58 million annual cap on the tax credits. Other private and independent schools in Georgia also have their own scholarship programs that compete for the same tax credits. It may sound like a lot of money, but the 2014 cap was reached only three weeks after GRACE began applying for the 2014 tax credits. GRACE cannot formally apply for this year s tax credits until January 1, Your pre-registration date determines the order in which tax credits are processed.
