3 St. Mary on the Hill February 1, 2015 The fast pace of today s world often has us rushing through our daily life, with little direction or thought as to the kind of life we should be leading. Fortunately, the Catholic faith provides us with a solid moral compass and great many role models to help us find our way. I love the communion of saints. I love reading any story about a saint and how he or she was always focused on God s love. These stories help me keep a focus on what is truly important. Faith involves both the head and the heart. And so it is good to take time out of our busy schedules and give ourselves to simple little practices that help us remember that the big picture needs to always include God. I love the Catholic devotions and traditions that enliven and nurture our Catholic faith, touching our hearts and allowing us to express our love of God. Authentic popular devotions are an invaluable means of promoting an increased love and trust of God. This week we celebrate two popular devotions. The first takes place on Monday, February 2 nd which is forty days after the Nativity of our Lord. On this day the Church celebrates the Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord. Under Jewish Law (in Leviticus) Mary presented herself to the Temple for ritualistic purifying. Of course, Mary did not need to be purified, but she did so out of obedience. When she arrived there with Joseph and Jesus, they came upon the old man, Simeon. We are told in the Gospel of Luke that Simeon was promised he would not die before seeing Christ. Simeon then uttered these words, the beautiful Canticle of Simeon, which is part of the night prayer of the Church: Now, Master, You can dismiss your servant in peace; You have fulfilled Your word. For my eyes have witnessed Your saving deed displayed for all the peoples to see: A revealing light to the Gentiles, the glory of Your people Israel. [Lk. 2:29-32] Since Simeon referred to the Christ child as a light, the role of blessing candles became important in celebrating this Feast Day so much so that it also became known as Candlemas. It is one of three major blessings in the liturgical year -- the other two being the blessing of Ashes and the blessing of Palms. Whenever I go into a new church I light a candle for a special intention and sometimes during my night prayer I will also light a candle. This simple devotion reminds me that Christ is the light of the world and he came to dispel our spiritual darkness. A practice that hasn t been promoted much in recent years is to bring candles from your home to be blessed by the priest on this Feast. These candles can be used throughout the year -- perhaps during Advent, during family prayer time, or by the bedside of a dying person. If you want to bring your candles to the 7:00 am Mass on Monday, I will be happy to bless them and I am sure Fr. Richard will be happy to do so at the 9:15 am Mass. Another devotional practice that was big when I was growing up was the annual St. Blaise blessing of throats on February 3 rd. We honestly know very little about St. Blaise. We know that Bishop Blaise was martyred in his episcopal city of Sebaste, Armenia, in 316. The legendary Acts of St. Blaise were written 400 years later. According to them Blaise was a good bishop, working hard to encourage the spiritual and physical health of his people. Although the Edict of Toleration (311), granting freedom of worship in the Roman Empire, was already five years old, persecution still raged in Armenia. St. Blaise was captured and when he was being taken to prison, a mother came up to him with her young son who had a fish bone lodged in his throat. At St. Blaise s command the child was able to cough up the bone. Four centuries give plenty of opportunity for fiction to creep in with fact. Who knows how accurate this story about St. Blaise was? But whether it is true or not, St. Blaise is seen as one more example of the power those have who give themselves entirely to Jesus. With faith we can follow the lead of the Church in asking for St. Blaise s protection. This is the blessing that is given at Mass on Tuesday: Through the intercession of St. Blaise, bishop and martyr, may God deliver you from ailments of the throat and from every other evil. In the Name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit (Blessing of St. Blaise) I had made peace with the fact that my perfect record with meeting the BAA goal had ended at 19 years, but a late report shows that we are now at 101% of our 2014 goal. I am a team player and so I am delighted. Thank you for your generosity in supporting the Bishop s many ministries throughout our Diocese. Next weekend we will be viewing the video for the start of the 2015 Bishop s Annual Appeal. I am hoping with your help to make my 21 straight goal in helping the work of the Church throughout South Georgia. Finally, if you are in Savannah on Monday be aware that Bishop Hartmayer has invited the entire Diocese of Savannah to join him at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist on Monday for a 5:00 pm Mass to commemorate the Year of Consecrated Life. My neighbors, Sr. Isabelle Lohan and Sr. Janet Roddy, will be there. The celebration enables the people of our Diocese to demonstrate our gratitude for the contribution of the Religious women and men who have and are evangelizing the gospel by their consecrated life. Next, Saturday the priests of the Deanery will be at Sheehan s irish Pub treating Srs. Isabelle and Sr. Janet along with Sr. Ann Brotherton as a way of expressing our gratitude to them for dedicating their lives to the work of the Church. On the Way Home: Jesus taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes. His authority was rooted in God s love. The authority that parents and teachers exercise over their children should also be rooted in God s love. Yet, so often today children seem to be in charge. What do you think of children who disrespectfully talk back or even shout at their parents?
