3 St. Mary on the Hill February 7, 2016 I like the traditional way that we get ready for Lent in this parish. Our Mardi Gras, which literally means Fat Tuesday in French, is not as rowdy or as hedonistic as the party down in New Orleans but the Knights of Columbus do put on a very nice, family orientated Pancake Supper in our Parish Hall this Tuesday evening at 6:00 pm. The day is also known as Pancake Tuesday. The custom of making pancakes comes from the need in times gone past to use up fat, eggs and dairy before the fasting and abstinence of Lent begins. Lent no longer has the physical austerity that it once did, so I am hoping that 21 st Century Catholics will seriously give themselves to keeping today s much easier rules of fasting and abstaining from meat. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. The norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal. Two smaller meals may also be taken, but not to equal a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Church from age 14 onwards. Our Ash Wednesday Masses this week will be at 7:00 am, 9:15 am, 12:00 noon and 6:00 pm. Lent is a time of conversion and a time to deepen one s faith, demonstrating and sharing it through the corporal and spiritual works of mercy, Pope Francis said. Faith finds expression in concrete everyday actions meant to help our neighbors in body and spirit, the pope said in his message for Lent. Feeding the hungry, visiting the sick, welcoming strangers, offering instruction, giving comfort -- on such things will we be judged, the pope wrote in his 2016 Lenten message. During this Year of Mercy, one of the situations to which our Holy Father wants to bring a deeper sense of God s love and mercy would be that of a broken Marriage. Our belief that it is God s plan for the Sacrament of Marriage to be forever is not changing and never will, but how we minister to those seeking an annulment could definitely be more pastoral. An annulment is a declaration by a church tribunal that a marriage lacked at least one of the elements necessary for it to be a binding union. Investigating a marriage s validity can be a long process, one that can sometimes seem burdensome and overly-bureaucratic to those waiting to learn if their previous union will be found invalid or not. In an attempt to streamline annulment procedures and ensure that final conclusions are reached more quickly, with less financial cost and in a more pastoral way, Pope Francis recently issued reforms to the process. The changes, made in conjunction with a commission the pope established to look at the annulment process last year, do nothing to alter the church s consistent teaching that marriage is a sacred, permanent union and that valid marriages cannot be dissolved. But the changes are expressions of mercy, removing the burden of a lengthy process or a process that can be a financial burden to the individual. It is the Holy Fathers hope that streamlining the process will encourage more people to use it to investigate a marriage bond. What s the Special Process? In certain cases where both parties agree that their marriage should be declared invalid and there is clear and abundant proof to support their assertion, the parties can now opt to have the diocesan bishop judge their case directly, instead of going through the ordinary tribunal process. The parties will still need to present enough solid evidence for the bishop to make a confident determination of the status of their marriage, but in many cases this will be a simpler process. This evidence would include witness testimony, expert testimony (such as evidence provided by a counselor, psychologist or other qualified professional) or documents. I ve asked the Priests and Deacons of the parish to familiarize themselves with this process and I d hope that if you are in a second marriage and would like to have it convalidated (i.e. blessed and recognized by the Church) that you would make an appointment with one of us. This special process will be the subject of our first Lenten Talk at Lunch given by Deacon Ken on Wednesday, February 17 th in the Parish Hall. More information can be found on the Diocesan Web site at On the Way Home: Lent begins this Wednesday. Remember that this Wednesday and Friday our family will not eat any meat. What do you plan to do this Lent to draw closer to Jesus? What can we do as a family to bring a deeper sense of God s mercy to our World?

5 WORSHIP In Honor of... The flowers on the altar this weekend are in honor of Justin and Susie Patchan on their 40 th wedding anniversary. Parish Mission Mission leader Deacon Mark Cesnik St. Catherine of Siena Institute Discipleship and the call to conversion are at the heart of the parish mission, since everything else flows from them: stewardship, the discernment of gifts and vocation, prayer, involvement in the parish, and individual work to carry God s love into the world. Consequently, all of Deacon Mark s mission is crafted to have an evangelizing effect on the members of the parish. Using scripture, the rich teaching of the Church, and reflections on his own journey of faith and the lives of disciples who have influenced him, Deacon Mark attempts to present Jesus invitation to each one of us to become his disciple in ways that are personal, fresh, engaging, and often surprisingly amusing. February 8 - Day of Prayer On February 8, the Church commemorates the life of St. Josephine Bakhita, a Canossian Sister who was kidnapped and sold into slavery in Sudan. St. Josephine was beatified in 1992 and canonized shortly after on October 2000 by Pope John Paul II. She is the first person to be canonized from Sudan and is the patron saint of the country. She is the patron saint for the victims of human trafficking, the modern-day form of slavery that includes forced labor and many women and children of both sexes being forced into prostitution. The feast day of Saint Josephine Bakhita, February 8, has been designated by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops as a day of prayer to raise awareness of, and to help end, the scourge of human trafficking.

Please call your reservation to (leave your name and number attending) by Tuesday, March 1, Centering Prayer is a type of contemplative prayer that helps one to still the mind and in that stillness, to open up to God at the deepest level of our being. It is a method of complete surrender to God. In that stillness and surrender, a level of intimacy with the Divine can be experienced that cannot be found through thoughts and words alone. Contemplative prayer helps us to experience the true reality of God and to rest in the peace of God that surpasses all understanding. (Phillippians 4:7) The method of Centering Prayer was developed by Fr. Thomas Keating and two other priests from the Trappist order in the 1970s. It is a simplified version of the type of contemplative prayer practiced in Christian monasteries for many hundreds of years. Elijah Cup will be at the 10:30 am Mass January through March 2016 The Elijah Cup program is a ministry to foster and support priestly and religious vocations.
