3 November news Church of the Redeemer November 2013 Fall Fair: Thursday November 7th 3-8pm & Friday November 8th 9am-2pm The biggest event sponsored by St. Mary s Guild is about to begin. This event is one of the highlight projects for the guild, mainly because of the response that is shown by all of our parishioners, people in our valley and all the people that come from the surrounding area. We have a wonderful variety of crafts from our Christmas booth, candy and baked booths, collectable booth, book booth, country store and variety booth. Wonderful food, pies and other deserts will be available for dinner Thursday evening and lunch on Friday. Come and enjoy seeing old friends and neighbors, being able to pick up beautiful handmade articles, get your reading books for the year and have a wonderful meal. SEE YOU AT THE FAIR! If anyone is interested in volunteering hours a few at any of the booths contact Glenda or Vickie! Sunday School News Christmas Candy Sale The Sunday School will be selling Christmas chocolates again this year. The Christmas ball shaped candy comes in peanut butter, coconut cream, or peppermint flavors covered with chocolate. The cost is $5 per dozen. Candy orders and money can be turned in between November 1 st through November 30 th. Orders will be ready for pick up on December 15 th between 9:30 11:00 am. Deliveries can be arranged. Completed candy order forms (attached) can be given to any of the Sunday School teachers or left in the church office. Orders can also be placed by phone or mail. Please mail your order to the church office. If you choose to place an order by phone, please call Bonnie Garrity at Thank you for your support. 4 Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Aren t the colors of fall beautiful? Through the eyes of faith, we can appreciate the Creator of this beauty as well. As we follow Jesus, we go beyond simply giving God thanks for creation and enter into a life of appreciation of God s saving grace in our lives. We learn to live our life by faith and not just by sight. Our response to God s grace is to continue to participate in the ongoing life of the Spirit with gratitude and awe. Many spiritual writers use the metaphor of a river to refer to life in the Spirit. When I think of rivers, my mind often returns to Western Colorado, where I attended college and spent time rafting the Gunnison, Colorado and Taylor rivers. I think that congregations have a lot in common with a group of people in a raft going down the Gunnison River! Safely navigating the river depends on the participation of the people in the raft to work together and use their paddles to help guide the raft. Now, on any river there is smooth sailing on flat water, a relaxing time when there is ample opportunity to relax, look around and enjoy the beauty of creation, enjoying one another s company. We love those times, don't we? Yet, we also know that there are times when we face the challenges of whitewater! The rapids can be exhilarating and exciting and sometimes it can be so frightening and you just hold on for dear life! The life of a congregation on the river of the Spirit has times of smooth water and times of challenging whitewater. Anyone can float a raft down the smooth parts of the river, yet to make it through the challenges of spiritual whitewaters, a congregation must commit to working together with everything that each person has to offer. It is not uncommon to have a few people frozen with fear, you can get through without a paddle or two. Yet, if there are too many who are able, and just choose not to put their backs into it and contribute what they have to offer, the raft is very likely to get into trouble. This isn't the congregation s first raft trip down the river, but it is important to remember that rivers are not static, they change constantly. So, we have to be aware of where the raft is and know that people will commit what they have to offer, so the raft can keep centered in the flowing river of God s Spirit! 7 United Thank Offering Ingathering : Sunday, November 10th The mission of the United Thank Offering is to expand the circle of thankful people. To achieve this mission we encourage daily prayers, offerings, and awareness of the abundance of God s blessings. Once again it is time to respond to some of the world s needs in places far and near, by accepting the familiar blue envelope and returning it during the month of October. The monies collected through UTO has helped people in South Africa to purchase seeds, tools, and fertilizer to improve agricultural production and increase the health of local residents. United Thank Offering Prayer Gracious God, source of all creation, all love, all true joy; accept, we pray, these outward signs of our profound and continuing thankfulness for all life. Keep each of us ever thankful for all the blessings of joy and challenges that come our way. Bless those who will benefit from these gifts through the outreach of the United Thank Offering. This we ask through Him who is the greatest gift and blessing of all, Jesus Christ Amen. What is a sukkot? Sukkot is a Hebrew word that refers to the ceiling of a makeshift dwelling. It is a symbol for a Jewish festival of harvest each Fall. It is in remembrance of the Jews who wandered in the wilderness, living in temporary shelters, and how God provided for them. This will be a major symbol of our stewardship program this October. Come and join us and learn more about how the sukkot symbolizes our life of faith as well. Youth group says thank you On Oct. 20th the youth group shared of themselves and a few of the things that they are thankful for at the Sunday morning services. I want to thank the kids for doing a wonderful job and for getting out of bed BOTH Saturday and Sunday to be at the church at 8am. Thanks also to the parents who brought their kids to the church both mornings early. Without your support, it would be very difficult to do what we do. St,. Mary s Guild November meeting will take place on Monday, November 4th at 6pm. Please note the change in date and time. We will be setting up for the fall fair with a short meeting to follow. 8 What Happens to the Harvest of Pledge Cards? Harvest is a time to give thanks and celebrate God s bounty, and it is also a time to seriously reflect and make decisions that will affect the next year s crop. On November 3rd, we are going to collect pledge cards from the congregation during the 10:30 service and offer them on the Altar to God. We will celebrate these pledges with a special harvest coffee hour following the service on November 3rd. The pledges will be tabulated during this coffee hour and a report will be given to the people attending in regard to the amount of money that has been pledged for the coming year. The time and talent portions of the cards are put together in the church office prior to the next vestry meeting in November. The Vestry then makes decisions in light of the collective harvest of pledge cards. It is the Vestry that is charged with figuring out a plan for the upcoming year, of how best to use the resources of time, effort and money that the congregation has offered through pledging. The plan that the Vestry develops is then presented to the Annual Meeting in January for the congregation s approval. So, turning in a pledge card really does make a difference! The deadline for the December Newsletter will be Saturday, November 23rd. Be sure to get any holiday announcements to me to make sure they are a part of the next month s letter! Have a great November! Well we had our first fall work bee on Saturday the 26th and we managed to haul three truck loads of leaves and debris to the recycling center in Sayre. It only took about two hours and the yard, back walkway and parking lot side look much better because of the hard working crew that showed up. I d like to thank Rose Carpenter, Chuck Preston, Gretchen Rentschler, Tricia Schamel, Jim Shay, Joyce Anderson, Betsy Schumacher, and Mary Rhodes for coming out and helping in round one with the fall clean-up. Thanks to Tricia and Gretchen for bringing the food which we ate in the kitchen where it was much warmer than eating in the parking lot. I know what a lot of you are thinking; darn I missed that work bee, but you are in luck. There are still a lot of leaves to come down so I d like to try and plan our next one for Wednesday November 6th at 4:30.
