As this testing is conducted under strict testing conditions it can be quite daunting for many students so well done to all of our students in trying their best. NAPLAN provides a snapshot using one format of testing in literacy and numeracy over a few days. Later this term, all parents will be meeting with teachers to be updated on children s progress where a comprehensive report on their achievements can be made based on ongoing assessment that the teachers have been gathering throughout this first half of the year. What a fabulous turn out we had for the Mother s Day Breakfast last Friday. Thank you to Sam & Sons from Preston Market for their generous donation of fresh fruit. It was just terrific to see so many Mums and Grandmother s enjoying breakfast with their children. A huge thank you to our Parents and Friends for organising such a terrific Mother s Day Stall seeing the excitement on the children s faces as they shopped for presents was just priceless. Special thanks to Stephanie Ivancic who organised a very inspirational speaker after the breakfast and I am sure all the parents who were able to attend would have left feeling very inspired. The Mother s Day raffle was just fantastic and my thanks to all of the families who made donations. Next week prep interviews will commence for those who have applied for prep in Please note that Prep Enrolments for 2019 have now closed. Student Levy fee and the First Instalment of school fees. 2 P A G E 2 Religion The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Pentecost is a Christian observance commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit on Jesus Christ s disciples. Many Christians in Australia celebrate Pentecost. What do people do? Many churches in Australia focus on themes about the Holy Spirit as part of the Pentecost Sunday services. Bible passages regarding the Holy Spirit s descent on Jesus disciples are read out during the services. Background According to the Christian Bible, it was on the 50th day after Easter when the apostles prayed together and the Holy Spirit descended on them. They received the gift of tongues the ability to speak in other languages and immediately began to preach about Jesus Christ to Jewish people from all over the world who flocked to Jerusalem for the Feast of Shavuot. Christian Pentecost not only commemorated the Holy Spirit s visit but also marked the birth of the Christian Church. According to church tradition, Pentecost is about seven weeks after Easter Sunday, or 50 days after Easter, including Easter Day. Symbols The symbols of Pentecost are those of the Holy Spirit and include flames, wind, and a dove. Pentecost Sunday falls this year on May 20th. Below is listed 10 things you should know about Pentecost Sunday. 1. Pentecost Sunday marks the day when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles. 2. Pentecost Sunday occurs 50 days after Easter. 3. The Bible records the Pentecost in Acts 2: Pentecost comes 10 days after the Ascension of Jesus Christ. 5. Pentecost is also known as "the birthday of the Church". 6. Pentecost fulfils Jesus' promise to send the "Counsellor" and "Spirit of Truth" in John Pentecost launches the large-scale spreading of the Gospel after Jesus' Ascension. Acts 2:41 records that after Peter spoke to the crowd after receiving the Holy Spirit, some 3,000 people were baptised. 8. Pentecost symbols are predominately fire, flames and a dove. 9. Jews also celebrate Pentecost, but not for the same reason as Christians. The celebration by Jews of Pentecost S T C A R L O B O R R O M E O

T E R M 2 I S S U E 3 is to observe God giving the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai 50 days after the Exodus. The Pentecost in Jewish tradition takes place 50 days after Passover. May God, the Holy Spirit, bless us and guide us today and every day. Amen P A G E Pentecost is usually represented with the colour red, which symbolises the fire of the Holy Spirit. A Prayer as we approach Pentecost Sunday Let us pray to God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit Let us celebrate with joy the beauty of our family. Let us glorify our God from whom we gain our strength. Let us celebrate together the values we hold dear, knowing that in Jesus we have our teacher. Let us pray as we gather, in the simplicity and joy to the Holy Spirit in who we find peace. Thank you God, for sending your Holy Spirit to the disciples on the day of Pentecost. Fill our hearts with your loving, joyful Spirit, so that we can praise you in our lives, like the disciples did. Sunday 27 th May, Trinity Sunday is the first Sunday after Pentecost in the liturgical calendar. It celebrates the Christian doctrine of the Trinity, the three Persons of God: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Today's feast honours the family of God: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The only way we can know anything about this divine family is what Jesus revealed to us. The scriptures assure us that we belong to the family of God. Saint Paul reminds us that the Holy Spirit has brought us into this family, as brothers and sisters of Jesus. At the Ascension, Jesus tells his disciples to bring everyone into God's family by baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Talk to children about the unity of God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Describe the union to them in terms of their own family members, and reminded them that ultimately we are all a part of God's divine family. When we make the sign of the cross, we bless our whole body with the divine family. Help them to understand the gesture of the sign of the cross so they can be aware of the holy trinity and the unity of the church. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to The Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning and is now and ever shall be world without end. Amen What an exciting time at St. Carlo s! The Year 4 students are continuing to learn about the joy and love of receiving Jesus for the very first time. The word 'communion' means to be united with. We believe that in Holy Communion we are united in a special way with Jesus Christ. At his last supper, Jesus said of the bread that he shared among his followers, "Take and eat, this is my body." When we receive Holy Communion, we believe that in a mysterious way we are sharing in the Body and blood of Christ. First Eucharist is a special occasion - a further step in becoming one with Christ and united with the People of God. For most, first Eucharist takes place at about the age of ten. The church affirms that parents are the first educators of their children in the faith. You are handing on your faith to your S T C A R L O B O R R O M E O N E W S L E T T E R

children all the time. You have the wonderful responsibility of preparing your child to receive the Eucharist for the first time. Please pray for the students of St. Carlo as they continue their preparations to receive the Blessed Sacrament. Thank you to Laura, Lisa, Louise, Brendan & Nancy for their continued preparation of the students Project Compassion A total of $ was raised through the Project Compassion boxes. All monies have been forwared to Caritas Australia. Upcoming Eucharist Celebrations Year 1 Family Parish Mass ~ Sunday 27 th May. Mass begins at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday 23 rd May Years 4,5 & 6 Mass to celebrate the Feast of Mary Help of Christians Patroness of Australia FEAST OF MARY HELP OF CHRISTIANS PATRONESS OF AUSTRALIA Thursday May 24 th is the Feast of the Solemnity of Mary Help of Christians. The Patroness of Australia. When you have a spare moment within your busy schedule, please pray the Hail Mary and ask the Blessed Mother to intercede on your behalf to our Lord. The Feast Day of Our Lady Mary Help of Christians has been celebrated in Australia since The ceremony dates back to the start of the 1800's at a time when Napoleon Bonaparte had gaoled PopePius VI and later Pope Pius VII. at Fontainebleau. The Holy Father vowed to God that if he were restored to the Roman See, he would institute a special feast in honour of Mary. Bonaparte released the Pope and on 24 May, 1814 Pius VII returned to Rome. Later on the Pope decreed that the Feast of Our Lady Mary Help of Christians be kept on 24 May. The infant church in Australia had a special reason for turning to Mary. No priests were sent to the colony in its early days and Mass was not allowed except for one brief year until It was largely the Rosary in those early days that kept the faith alive. The Australian Catholic community remained faithful to Mary and Australia was the first nation to choose her under the title, 'Mary Help of Christians' as principle Patroness. Australia also became the first country to have a cathedral dedicated in Our Lady, Mary's name. St Mary's Cathedral in Sydney was dedicated in her honour by the Irish pioneer priest, Fr John Therry who arrived in Sydney in Reference Sydney Archdiocese of Australia Wednesday 30 th May Year 2 class mass Regards Peter Marinucci Religious Education Leader

Literacy the strategies developed from each of the components is vital for learning to read. VICTORIAN PREMIER S READING CHALLENGE Dear Parents, We have 34 students that have completed the Challenge to date. Well Done! There have been 2,124 books read so far. The 5 Star Rated listed books as voted by the students from St Carlo include: Old Tom s Guide to Being Good, Old Tom Man of Mystery, The Old Tom s Big Book of Beauty-all by the author Leigh Hobbs who recently visited the children at our school. Also, The Worst Witch and The Worst Witch all at Sea both books by Jill Murphy Thank you to everyone that has tried logging in and entered at least one book on-line. However, there are many children who have not entered any books on-line as yet, please enter at least one book so that we can check if the username and passwords are working correctly. Don t forget to borrow Premier s Reading Challenge books from our very own school library. Professional Learning- Understanding the reading process by Deslea Konza At this week s staff meeting, the teachers developed some professional learning on how to best teach our students to read. Mrs Cheryle Barry and Mrs Lisa Summers led the staff through six main areas for Understanding the reading process (Oral Language, Phonological awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Fluency, Comprehension) as researched and prepared by Deslea Konza, Associate Professor, Faculty of Education and Arts, Edith Cowen University, Western Australia. Over the next few weeks you will be presented with some of the findings via the newsletter. Learning to read is a complex process but the most important educational skill that we need to learn. It builds on our oral language, the development of phonemes (sounds) and comprehension skills. There are six major components of an effective reading program and according to Deslea Konza, Oral Language Oral language is the foundation for learning to read as it s the first contact they have with language and how it is structured when immersed in talk from birth. Children who are surrounded and included in conversations have a huge advantage in developing vocabulary, the structures of language and tuning into the sounds of the English language. Oral language development is important for both reading and writing. In order for children to understand language in the printed form, they need to have developed a strong vocabulary and how words are used in context of our spoken language. Young children also benefit from learning nursery rhymes and having books read to them often. Responding to and having a talk about what they read helps to develop an understanding of the stories and characters. The more parents read to children the more they will learn to read even before they start school. They will understand how we open a book, turn the pages and read from left to right. Once the children begin school, they will be engaged in many opportunities to further develop their oral language skills, therefore, teachers are required to create highly stimulating language environments within the classroom. Many thanks for your support, Nella Fimiani Literacy Leader/ Deputy Principal

Student Wellbeing Allowing our children to make mistakes, suffer disappointments and setbacks allows them to experience much learning. If we continually try to save our children from experiencing failure we actually rob them of opportunities to develop their own problem solving and coping skills, independence and resilience. It is our job to teach and train our children how to deal with things when they go wrong and support them like a coach does their team. And remember parents if you want to build independence and confidence in your children, Never do for a child what they can do themselves! Dear Mum and Dad, Please help me to be confident and resilient.. Let me put my bag away in the morning at school Let me put my reader/ homework/diary out myself when I get to school Give me a chance to solve conflict with a friend on my own (even though I may have talked to you about it and I am feeling upset) questions if I need it and if you help me can you please teach me to do it for myself and not do it for me?) Let me talk to a teacher on my own when I have a problem (and got some encouragement from you beforehand if I needed it) Let me clean up after breakfast / dinner if I can use a computer games, then I can clean up! Let me make my own breakfast (even in Prep I can get out the cereal box and milk!) Let me make some or all of my own lunch (with some guidance if making unhealthy choices) Please allow me to mistakes without upsetting you as I need to explore the world myself with some guidance from you. Please allow me to solve problems on my own it s the only way I can build resilience. Please let me explore the world and follow my own interests! Let me talk to a teacher on my own when I have not done my homework (and face the consequences!) Let me do most of my homework on my own (I will ask

Environment Club Winter is almost here and the weather is definitely getting cooler. At St Carlo the garden is winding down and at the moment we have one more lonely pumpkin and some chilli to pick. Even the leaves have fallen from our fruit trees, symbolising that Autumn has come and gone. Over the next week or so the garden club will be starting to plant our winter vegies and then it will be a waiting game whilst we watch as they slowly grow. Everything slows down over winter. So if it is time for you to plant don t forget to turn your soil over and add some compost to the soil so that the new crops have the nutrients they need to grow big, strong and healthy. If you have pumpkins that you have grown, here are a few yummy recipes that you can try.
