4 P A G E 4 Council Update June 2018 Discussions Financial Secretary, Geoff Morton, reported April was a good month as we had five Sundays and Easter, however, income is still $8, behind where we were at the end of April in Simply Giving remains strong and on budget. Treasurer, Mary McCoy, reported that we are $37,000 under the year-to-date budget. We are in good shape as everything continues to be running under budget. Max Epling made a presentation for The Lutheran Coalition. He also introduced Mike Dooley who will be replacing him on the board of The Lutheran Coalition when he moves. Accolades Many thanks to the teachers and assistants that dedicated their time teaching Sunday School classes this year. A huge thank you to all the adults that assisted each week with Saints and Sinners, Confirmation, FX3, and Bible Study groups. Thank you to the Fellowship Committee and the congregation for helping, serving, and preparing a delicious meal for the Picnic Celebration Lunch on April 29, Thank you to Max Epling for his years of service on The Lutheran Coalition and the Habitat for Humanity builds. Welcome to Mike Dooley as he replaces Max on The Lutheran Coalition Board and as Good Shepherd s contact person for the Habitat builds. Oops! I Think I Forgot to Register for Sunday School for Next Year! No problem! If you have a child ages 4 through high school age by September 1st and have not already verified your information or registered your child, please contact Janice Swinford, Sunday School Superintendent at sundayschool@gslutheran.org. All are welcome, members and visitors, in all our Bible Studies and Sunday School classes. We will begin all Sunday School classes on August 12th. Two-Can Sunday is June 3 Bring in your Canned Goods for support of our local food initiatives. A huge thank you to Good Shepherd Toucan Contributors! Our Toucan Sunday program has been a huge success and Papa s Pantry and Timothy Lutheran pantries have been so appreciative. Each month we have collected lbs. of food.
5 P A G E 5 Last Day of Sunday School For the last day of Sunday School, Little Red Barn brought their animals to us for a petting zoo to help us celebrate raising $179 through Sunday School offerings, which allowed us to donate 100 chicks, 2 roosters and one goat to God's Global Barnyard through ELCA Good Gifts. So if you believe you heard a moo moo here and a baa baa there on Mother's Day, you did! Thank you to all the parents, grandparents, teachers and assistants of our Sunday School classes that contributed to this success. And most importantly, thank you for a wonderful Sunday School year for all classes, children and adult. You brought your children and yourselves and with God's guidance through our outstanding teaching teams, we had a grace filled year of learning. We are so grateful to have a full complement of teachers and assistants already signed up to help next year, many of them returning! A special shout out of thanks to Pat Bull for photographing all our friends! Have a wonderful summer and we will see you in worship! 6 P A G E 6 Dear friends at Good Shepherd, Spring is in full swing and so are we here at Good Shepherd! The garden is growing, VBS is around the corner, and apparently your hearts are overflowing with generosity. I wanted to take a moment to personally thank you on our recent successes in our many Outreach endeavors. First, I would like to thank everyone who contributed to our ELCA Feed the World spare change collection challenge during the Lenten season. To date we have collected $727 with approximately $300 more in quarters still to be counted. We will have final numbers soon, but to be hovering around the $1000 mark in simply spare change donations is incredible. Also, thank you to all who have donated to our annual GAKAC backpack campaign. I am happy to report we will be providing 150 backpacks filled with all the supplies a successful high school student needs. Thank you to all who donated socks and underwear to GAKAC as well. Returning this year is a backpack assembly day so you can see your donated dollars in action. We invite you to join us on Sunday June 10th, to stop by the Fellowship Hall between services to help pack a backpack with all the necessary goodies needed for a successful school year. We will have all the supplies on hand, in assembly line fashion. This is a project all ages can help with and will only take a few minutes of your time. For the month of June we will focus our Caretakers of Our Community collection efforts on our own needs for a successful MUST Summer Lunch campaign which will take place July All items can be dropped off in the designated bins in the fellowship hall during the month of June. And finally, in a show of appreciation for all you do to make our Outreach efforts a success and also in an effort to advertise just how awesome we are here at Good Shepherd, we encourage you to stop by Fellowship Hall and pick up some of our new, reusable grocery totes compliments of the GSLC Outreach and Green team. The bags will be located in Fellowship Hall in the weeks to come and are free for the taking. The only thing we ask is that family units living under the same roof please limit themselves to three bags so that all our members can receive some. As always, thanks for your tremendous support in all we do here at Good Shepherd. I truly cannot do it without you! Kristin Brenneman GSLC Outreach Coordinator
7 P A G E 7 How do you show God s Love? With Chris & Sammie cheering them on, Kari, Avery, Mark & Jessie Corley have been students at The One Taekwondo Center for about 4 years. Master Kim asked families to host 25 students from two Korean Taekwondo Demonstration Teams. These kids are students of Master Kim s former classmates and friends. They have enjoyed the aquarium and World of Coca-Cola during school hours, as well as putting on demonstrations for local elementary schools and attending worship at Good Shepherd. The Corley s have enjoyed spending time with Do Hyun, Jun Seo, and Jin Woo. Do Hyun went bowling for the first time and won, Jun Seo helped prepare dinner one evening, and Jin Woo keeps everyone laughing. With the Corley s not knowing much Korean, and the boys having limited English, communication can sometimes be troublesome (Google Translator comes in handy), but they have found food and fun to be universal. They were also excited to have them there as Avery and Jessie tested to earn their Black Belts and watch the two demonstration teams. Having this opportunity has been educational and rewarding for all.
