Teach us that liberty is not only to be loved but also to be lived. Liberty is too precious a thing to be buried in books. It costs too much to be hoarded. Help us see that our liberty is not the right to do as we please, but the opportunity to please to do what is right. Peter Marshall, before the U.S. Senate A publication of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Woodstock, GA Thank You, Thank You, Thank You Rolling River Rampage-VBS By the time you receive this, Vacation Bible School will be underway. We have registered more kids this year than in the past few years, sharing God s Word and love to 103 children in our community with 22 from our own Good Shepherd families. Our theme this year was Rolling River Rampage. We discussed themes of Adventure, Acceptance, Peace, Rest and Joy. Our overriding theme for the week was from Isaiah 43:2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you. What a great verse for us all to remember. We especially want to thank all of the many volunteers that Renovation Almost Complete The renovation in the narthex, administration hallway and bathrooms will be wrapping up in the coming weeks. Simply Giving remains strong and on budget. Treasurer, Mary McCoy, reported that we are $37,000 under the year-todate budget. We are in good shape as everything continues to be running under budget. The renovation is running on time and on budget. 3 A word from our Pastor.. THE Second LETTER OF [PASTOR] PAUL TO THE WOODSTOCKIANS Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be a pastor, set apart for the gospel of God, to all God s beloved saints of Good Shepherd congregation who are in Woodstock: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I hope by the time you read this my return is at least scheduled and imminent. I'm happy to report that my recuperation is going very well and I find new strength everyday. I thank God for this blessing. My surgery was mostly on the minimum end of what the surgeon had discussed with me. The plastic liner of my artificial hip socket was replaced and a new ball was put on my femur implant as expected. The only surprise was some deterioration of my pelvis which required bone grafting. I am amazed by what medical science can accomplish in our bodies. Even in the 16 years since my original hip replacement, many advancements have been made. We are fortunate to live in a time of such possibilities. I miss you dearly, but have been encouraged and blessed by your many kindnesses. I can feel the power of your prayers and beseech you to continue to support me in that life-giving way. I look forward to the arrival of the mail each day and the reception of your cards filled with good wishes. Debbie and I have so enjoyed the wonderful meals prepared for us. I was stunned, and so grateful, to receive the amazing Ipad from you; It has helped me pass many long and boring hours. Time off when you can't do anything isn't all that great. I'm not very good at just sitting. Debbie joins me in thanking you sincerely from the bottoms of our hearts for all that you have done for us in our time of need. We give thanks to God for you unceasingly and look forward to being with you again soon in the fellowship of the Good Shepherd. Your brother in Christ, Pastor Paul 3
4 Save the date July 14th Give a Kid a Chance is a program designed to help children in Cherokee County start each new school year on the right foot. Since 2006, GAKAC has been providing backpacks, clothing, haircuts, medical/dental screenings, and hearing and vision tests to children in the county who don t otherwise have access to or the means for these services. With the combined efforts of more than 40 churches, ministries, civic groups and businesses, GAKAC has helped more than 23,000 students get ready for a new school year. Once again, Good Shepherd rose to the challenge to help ensure this organization is successful in its goal. Thank you to everyone who donated funds to the Give-a-Kid-A-Chance Backpack program this spring. Thanks to your generosity, we once again reached our goal of being able to provide 150 backpacks to this wonderful organization as well as providing a plethora of socks and underwear (their most needed clothing donations). In addition, thanks to everyone who joined us on Sunday, June 10th to help pack a backpack with all the necessary goodies needed for a successful school year. This year s Give A Kid A Chance event day will be Saturday, July 14th at both Canton United Methodist and Hillside United Methodist locations. If you would like to volunteer for the actual event please visit to sign up. I can attest firsthand, it is a very rewarding day. Middle School Commissioning All youth and leaders leaving for Nashville, TN on Sunday, July 15 will be commissioned to serve at the 8:30 a.m. worship service. Please make sure you bring all your belongings with you, as we will load up and leave directly after the service. July 16th-20th Must Summer Lunch MUST Summer Lunch Assembly is just around the corner. While summer often means sleeping in or planning your next getaway, many of our neighbors are wondering how they will feed their children lunch today. That s when MUST Ministries steps in with the Summer Lunch Program and brings the whole community together to help those in need. With countless, compassionate volunteers, MUST provides a nutritious lunch each summer weekday to thousands of children in Cherokee and surrounding counties. Good Shepherd has helped with this ministry for over a decade now and this year is no exception. We hope you will plan to join us as we assemble 2,500 sack lunches for the food insecure children of Cherokee County. This is a perfect family service opportunity and all ages are welcome! Assembly will be the week of July in the Fellowship Hall from 8:30 10:00 am every morning. Drivers are also needed to deliver the food to New Life Church on Exit 14 in Holly Springs. Look for Sign Up Sheets at Sign Up Central in the weeks to come. Empty Nesters SAVE THE DATE!! SunTrust Park tour, Saturday, August 25, with lunch or dinner afterward at a restaurant TBD in the Battery! Price is about $20.00 per person for the tour. Mark your calendars! 4
5 Activity Page OF ANY AGE Destination Devotions Planning a summer trip? Take along a Scripture passage befitting your vacation to use for devotions and prayer time (all NIV below): In the mountains: The mountains and hills will burst into song before you (Isaiah 55:12). At a lake, perhaps on a fishing trip: They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. Come, follow me, Jesus said, and I will send you out to fish for people (Matthew 4:18-19). Near an ocean or river: Let the sea resound let the rivers clap their hands (Psalm 98:7-8). In the desert: They looked toward the desert, and there was the glory of the LORD appearing in the cloud (Exodus 16:10). In the woods: Blessed is the one whose delight is in the law of the LORD. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season (Psalm 1:1-3). 5
