3 From the Pastor With our ELCA having its churchwide assembly from August in Pittsburgh, I thought it d be interesting to recall some of the contributions of our Lutheran heritage. Here is a list of some little known facts about some of the roles Lutherans played in the founding and early history of our nation. Did you know that?....lutherans were in America seven years before the pilgrims.the first book translated into any American Indian Language was Luther s Small Catechism.The first Stars & Stripes were made by Sara Austin and the Ladies Aid Society of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Philadelphia. It was presented to John Paul Jones and received the first salute granted to the Star Spangled Banner in Europe. It is now in the National Museum in Washington, D.C..Our Statue of Liberty was made by a French Lutheran, M. Frederic Bartholdi.It was a Lutheran boy who called a Lutheran Sexton to ring the Liberty Bell. The Liberty Bell itself was hauled from Philadelphia to Allentown, PA by a Lutheran, Frederick Leiser, in The Bell was then hidden under the floor of Zion Lutheran Church.The first President of the Continental Congress was a Lutheran, John Hanson. He served until Washington was inaugurated..a Lutheran pastor, Frederick A.C. Muhlenberg, was the first speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. With John Adams, he signed the first ten amendments of the Constitution, known as the Bill of Rights. In this day and age when we consider our identity and influence society as a Lutheran Church, it is still interesting to see that our roots in this country are deep. 5 Colossal Coaster World, get involved! VBS is one of our highlights each summer for the kids of St. Mark and our community! Please make it a priority to become a part of this great event! Some of the ways you can help are: > Sponsor a child for the week of VBS, no child is ever turned away. Cost is only $15.00 for a full week of activities. > Sign up to assist in the kitchen, as a group leader, helper or floating helper for a day or the whole week! > Collect and donate craft items. > Assist in the set up on Sunday, August 18th after service. Many tall helper will be needed with the set materials. VBS Meeting and Planning Preperations Sunday, August 11 VBS Meeting right after church to welcome Alyssa back and wrap up last minute details. Saturday, August 17 6pm we will meet at church to begin layouts for decorating materials. Lots of volunteers needed! Sunday, August 18 After service we will enjoy hot dogs and lemonade. The children and chaperones will head off to Nickelodeon universe at the Mall of America for fun and amusements! August VBS WEEK! 5:30 8pm. ALL KIDS WELCOME! Volunteers appreciated daily. They are originally from Zambia in South Africa. Jean writes their music and they are all very talented. The Kabambes love to praise the Lord in song.

Please make a special effort to be in church on Sunday and bring your friends and family.

Jean and KK are caregivers in the community living home where our own Donna DeMike (Dennis wife and Bonnie s sister) lives. They are originally from Zambia in South Africa. Jean writes their music and they are all very talented. The Kabambes love to praise the Lord in song. Growing up, their love for God and gospel music kept them connected. (Check out our Facebook page for a link to their music). Please make a special effort to be in church on Sunday and bring your friends and family. The VanZyl Girls on Sunday, August 11 Cecilia (10), Carmela (8) and Christine (6) will provide special music on Sunday, August 11. Make a special effort to have your children here to enjoy their music! Help keep our grounds and gardens looking their best with a donation. 11 Christmas in July? Ok I Know how people say we start thinking about the Christmas season too soon, but this time it is for a good reason. As you know each year we participate in Project Christmas Child (shoeboxes), and the funds collected in the African basket and widow s jar for Sept-Oct will be used to help pay for shipping of the boxes, but right now is a great time to buy items for inside the shoeboxes. This is the time of year that school supplies are on sale. Things to look for pens, pencils, pencil sharpeners, crayons, markers, note books (that will fit in a shoe box) scissor, solar calculators, stamps, stamp-pads. So when you are out shopping and see these items on sale considering picking up a few. You also might want to look around for seasonal items right now is a great time to buy items for inside the shoeboxes and toys, which might not be around when we pack the boxes in November. (Often time items can be picked up on clearance, I was just able to buy 40 pairs of flip flops for.50 each..) There will be a donation box downstairs to put supplies and toys in so you don t have to keep them at home. This year there may be additional volunteer opportunities for St. Mark on this project. One of the processing centers is located in Mpls and needs volunteers. (Youth and Adult) More to come on this in the September newsletter. 12 Missions around us Mission update: What happens to all those coins in the African Basket and Widows jar? A lot!! Thanks to everyone s generosity $ was sent to the victims of the Oklahoma Tornados. The money was sent through Lutheran Disaster Response. (May and June Funds). The funds for July and Aug will go to Rezek House Lutheran Social Service Youth Homeless Shelter. Each night it is estimated that more than 2,500 youth are homeless in MN. The Confirmation Girls on their recent outing to Streefland YMCA high-ropes course. Page 12 Making Our Mark
