1 Chelmsford Catholic Collaborative Home to St. Mary and St. John the Evangelist Parish Families Parish Offices located at 115 Middlesex Street, North Chelmsford, Massachusetts, (978) (978) fax (978) Just as our Blessed Mother Mary and the Evangelist, called John, came together at the foot of the cross to serve Christ crucified, so also do the parish families bearing their names come together to serve God by serving each other and all who make up the body of The Risen Lord Sunday, January 7th, 2017 Feast of Epiphany They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. -Matt 2: 10-11

Alice Bamford The Peabody Family The Priests of our Collaborative When they saw the STAR they exceedingly with great rejoiced A St. John time-honored tradition of remembering those we love, at Christmastime: welcome to more Q. Where in the Bible does it mention Limbo or Purgatory? A: The Bible doesn't specifically mention either, but we must Elisabeth Elliot ( ): Christian Author & Speaker remember that we're not a "Scripture Only" religion. The Catholic And the Answer is... Church has taught that there are three sources of authority by which Divine Truth is communicated to us: Scripture, the Tradition of the Church, and the living Magisterium. All three sources work together and inform each other, but each is authoritative on its own. Sacred Tradition is the body of Church teachings that have been practiced and believed from the early era of Christianity. The Magisterium is the college of bishops, with the Pope as its head, who continue to explain the deep truths of the Faith to us today. We've always believed that the Holy Spirit operates in Christ's Church through the Pope and bishops, who inherited their office from the apostles; we're not a "People of the Book," but a living Church in which the Holy Spirit continues to move and communicate Himself in the world today. So the doctrine of Purgatory and Limbo handed on to us through Sacred Tradition is as valid as anything we read in the Bible. That being said, there is some hint of Purgatory in the Gospels. In the parable of unmerciful servant (Matt 18:23-35), the master has the servant who refused to forgive his fellow servant's debt into prison "until he would pay his entire debt" (Mt. 18:34). This is a different image than Jesus uses for eternal damnation, which He usually speaks of a furnace "where there will be wailing and gnashing of teeth." Limbo is a different realm entirely; it is the mildest level of Hell, reserved for unbaptized babies who, if they had grown up, would not have accepted salvation. (God of course knows everything, including what would have happened had someone's history gone differently than it actually went.) The teaching on Limbo traces its origins to the Middle Ages, when literally all of the known world was either Catholic or Orthodox, and so baptism was a social expectation. The concept of Limbo was developed as a theological theory to harmonize the Church's position on the necessity of baptism with the reality of high infant-mortality rates. Emphasize the word "theory." Limbo was never definitively established as a dogma (a timeless truth) of the Faith. Despite this, it did gain widespread acceptance throughout the Church and was often mentioned even by popes and bishops, but never firmly asserted as a truth that has to be believed. Belief in Limbo is still valid, but not required; instead, we acknowledge our God's infinite mercy, and trust in His perfect justice to determine the eternal destiny of any given soul--but always guided by the virtue of hope.

Mercy Mats Ministry When you lie down, you will not be afraid; When you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. -Prov 3:24 This ministry provides mats for those who are homeless and have to sleep in unthinkable conditions. They are crocheted by using new or recycled plastic grocery bags. These mats provide a soft barrier between the ground and the individual. They are portable, light, easy to care for, and can provide warmth in the colder winter months. To make one 3 x 6 Mat, it takes bags yes, ! In order for the bags to be usable, we need to convert them to plarn PLastic yarn. This requires that the bags be flattened, cut, and looped together. Can you help? We will be meeting on the following Thursday evenings from 6:30-8:00 pm in St. Mary Parish Hall. January 18th February 8th March 15th For additional information, contact Julie at mercymats@yahoo.com Thirty-Day Challenge for January, should you choose to accept, is to Today we Celebrate The Epiphany of our Lord In an age where we rely on a gps or Google maps or waze, it is easy to find another route home. But the magi in today s Gospel didn t have this modern-day technology to rely on when they were told to return to their country by another way. The familiar route was not to be taken, ye they trusted and did what was advised. On this feast of Epiphany, what new way is God inviting you to travel right now? Where in your life might God be urging you to take another route? Will you trust that God will lead you along a new path? Begin or Refresh a Relationship! As with any relationship, the way we get to know each other is to spend time with each other. So, in order to have the best relationship with God that we can, should we not converse with God by reading the Word OF God? For the month of January, let us attempt to spend minutes a day reading His word (the Bible) and growing in relationship WITH Him. that the gifts presented by the three kings were symbolic of the importance of Jesus' birth? The gold representing his royal standing; frankincense his divine birth; and myrrh his mortality that Epiphany is also known as Three Kings Day? The three Kings Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar represented Europe, Arabia and Africa respectively. that in some Eastern Orthodox Christian communities, Epiphany is celebrated by a procession to the nearest river, lake or pond? The priest blesses the water and he throws a cross in the waves. People dive into the water to retrieve the cross, and the one who finds it is thought to be particularly blessed in the New Year. Well, now you do!

Sunday, January 7th 12:15-1:45 pm in the Church You are invited to adopt this custom in your Blessing the Threshold family. The family gathers to ask God s blessing on their home and on those who live in or visit the home. It is an invitation for Jesus to be a daily guest in our home, our comings and goings, our conversations, our work and play, our joys and sorrows. A traditional way of doing this is to use chalk to write above the home s entrance, 20 + C + M + B The letters C, M, B have two meanings. They are the initials of the traditional names of the three Magi: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar. They also abbreviate the Latin words Christus mansionem benedicat, May Christ bless the house. The + signs represent the cross and 2018 is the year. Blessing the Home... Blessing the Chalk... V. Our help is the name of the Lord: R. The maker of heaven and earth. V. The Lord shall watch over your going out and your coming in: R. From this time forth for evermore. Loving God, bless this chalk which you have created, that it may be helpful to your people; and grant that through the invocation of your most Holy Name, that we who use it in faith to write upon the door of our home the names of your holy ones... Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar may receive health of body and protection of soul for all who dwell in, or visit, our home; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Using the blessed chalk mark the lintel of your front door (or front porch step) as follows: 20 + C + M + B + 18 while saying... The three Wise Men, Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar followed the star of God s Son who became human two thousand and fifteen years ago. May Christ bless our home and remain with us throughout the new year. Amen. Then offer the following prayer: or Chalking the Door Visit, O blessed Lord, this home with the gladness of your presence. Bless all who live or visit here with the gift of your love; and grant that we may manifest your love to each other and to all whose lives we touch. May we grow in grace and in the knowledge and love of you; guide, comfort, and strengthen us in peace, O Jesus Christ, now and forever. Amen Chalking the door is a way to celebrate and literally mark the occasion of the Epiphany and God s blessing of our lives and home. With time the chalk will fade. As it does, we let the meaning of the symbols written, sink into the depths of our heart, and be manifest in our words and actions the Latin words, Christus mansionem benedictat, May Christ bless the house

Chelmsford catholic collaborative Social Shining a Light on Human Trafficking As the newly formed social Justice Committee, we would like to promote our first presentation on the issue of Human Trafficking. Human trafficking has more than one face. Two of the major faces of trafficking are labor trafficking and sex trafficking. Labor trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery, which exists both nationally and JUSTICE internationally. The most likely victims are the weak and vulnerable, such as newly arrived immigrants, those committee in debt, or those on the lower end of the class spectrum. Traffickers use physical and psychological control to keep victims in a state of repression until they are somehow able to escape. Sex trafficking is also a heinous form of slavery. Runaway or homeless youth, victims of domestic violence, or even victims of war are vulnerable to this form of trafficking. Young people below the age of eighteen who are targeted and demoralized are the most serious victims. The internet is a key resource many traffickers use to lure, manipulate, and entrap victims. Victims of either labor or sex trafficking can be held against their will for months, or even years. To understand how our community may take action to combat human trafficking, our committee is raising awareness through a speaker series. It only takes one person to make a difference! The first event is a panel discussion to learn more about how this issue affects our own community. Panelists will include a trafficking survivor, those who provide assistance to human trafficking victims, and those involved in law enforcement at state and federal levels. The panel discussion will take place on Thursday, January 11th at 7:00 pm at St. Mary Church Hall.

10 and now a word from Our Pastor If you say you are without sin, you make God a liar He is a man after my own heart

11 page 11 FROM OUR ST. MARY DIRECTOR OF MUSIC, JOHN ANTHONY VOLPE A Family That Sings Together, Stays Together This past weekend, we joyfully celebrated New Years 2018, but we also celebrated the Feast of the Holy Family. Of course, we all know the holy family Mary, Joseph, and Jesus but what about the Music Ministry Family of the Chelmsford Catholic Collaborative? While I currently serve as the Director of Music at St. Mary Parish, for the purpose of this article I would like to take off my director hat and put on my parishioner hat. As a parishioner participating in the music ministries of our collaborative, I am constantly reminded of the true meaning of family. A family, in my opinion, is not exclusively about blood relation, but about unconditionally supporting one another, compassionately understanding each other s needs, and lastly, selflessly sharing our God-given gifts in the service of others. I am fortunate enough to observe this on a regular basis, being a part of the music ministries at both St. John The Evangelist and St. Mary Parishes. Both Music Ministries have had, and or are having, periods of growth, difficulties, and transitions. However, through it all, we always manage to come together to bring the love of Christ in Song to our parish families. I may be partial, but both music ministries are top notch in my book. This was demonstrated by the magnificently talented musicians who brought the collaborative music liturgies nothing short of amazing, especially during this Christmas Season. We are forever grateful for the many music ministry members who spend countless hours bringing the gift of Music in Christ s name to us. Thank you for all you do for so many. We are truly Blessed right here at the CCC! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! St. John s Beautification Offering This offering is used to fund the beautification of our Altar. With your voluntary donation, you can request that it be In Memory Of, In Appreciation Of or For the Intentions Of someone. the January fund honors the following: Lorraine B. Corcoran Fr. Laurance Besides the Wise Men, what is significant about the Epiphany? why do we do that January 7th, 2017: Feast of Epiphany Currently we publish the names of the deceased who have previously been buried out of either of our churches. It has recently come to our attention that parishioners would like to be informed of funerals BEFORE they occur. Oftentimes, the newspaper and/or the church bulletin are the only ways in which we find out about the passing of someone whose funeral service we may wish to attend. Within the next couple of weeks, we will post on both parish websites the Funeral Calendar, so that we, as a community, may be better informed and able to provide physical and/ or prayerful support to those families that are suffering the loss of their loved one. Epiphany means "manifestation," or public display. The feast is usually celebrated January 6. In the US, it is celebrated on the Sunday nearest to January 6. It originates from a story unique to Matthew (2:1-12). Magi from the East come to offer homage to the newborn King, presenting him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. This part of Matthew's infancy narrative differs from Luke's account of the birth of Jesus. In Luke there are no Magi, star, nor gifts. Luke has Jesus being born in a stable after Mary and Joseph's long travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem. Matthew seems to have the family living in a house in Bethlehem, where the Magi find them. Why these differences? They stem from the needs and concerns of the audience the authors were addressing, as well as the theological stance of each author. Knowing the original intention helps get at the correct interpretation of the text. Since Matthew was writing primarily to a Jewish community, his concern was to show that Jesus did not come just for Jews, but for Gentiles as well. From his very birth, Jesus not only manifests himself to Jews, but also to Gentiles, who are prominently included in the manifestation, symbolized by the Magi and their journey. This is the most significant aspect of the feast of Epiphany. How do you manifest Jesus to all with whom you come into contact?
