4 Winter 2019 Bible Studies at St. Mary s Epic: Early Church A 10-week study beginning February 12, 2019 Tuesday evenings, 7:00-8:30 pm You will be led on a powerful journey through the first 500 years of Church history. You will meet courageous saints, eloquent theologians, ruthless emperors and heroic martyrs. This dynamic program presents the origins of the Faith from a truly Catholic perspective. Registration, with $30 payment, MUST be received January 18, Prophets: Messengers of God s Mercy A 10-week study beginning February 11, 2019 Monday mornings, 10:00 am - 12:00 noon If we consider that God is the Divine Bridegroom and the Church is his Bride, then the prophets can be seen as spiritual marriage counselors. They afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted, calling us to return to our covenant relationship with God. They urge us to repentance, warn us of the dangers of sin, and announce the blessings of faithfulness. Their prophetic words speak to us even today, as they draw us closer to our heavenly Bridegroom, and show us how to share him with others. Registration, with $25 payment, MUST be received by January 18, Have you registered for FORMED yet? Ite Missa est is the Latin phrase that ends the celebration, and it is from which the word Mass is derived. Mass is a corruption of the word Missa, which means to be sent forth. The dismissal is the moment when Christ commissions us to live out the liturgy in our lives. It reminds us that the Mass is not simply about the reception of communion. It is not intended to ever be a me and Jesus moment. It is never appropriate to receive the Eucharist and then leave the celebration, for in doing so we are focusing the celebration on what I have done. This is why it is so important not to leave Mass before the dismissal. If we miss this great commissioning, then we will miss Christ blessing us and sending us out to be his disciples. Jesus has redeemed us to live the mystery of salvation in which we have just participated, in order to proclaim in our lives what God has proclaimed to us. Leaving early means that we have not truly completed our worship of God in the way Christ or the Church calls us to do. And the real question we must ask ourselves is what is more important in our lives than worshiping God? What cannot wait another five or ten minutes when the Mass is the most important action of our life? The dismissal reminds us, as the liturgy makes Christ visible to us in various ways, that we must acknowledge in our lives the many ways Christ is present and similarly make Christ present to others. We hear in two new lines of dismissal Go and announce the Gospel of the Lord, or Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life. It is our duty then, to live out what we celebrate in order that others may come to know the faith, through the words and actions of those who profess faith in the Risen One. Above all, the liturgy is concerned with the worship of God by which the community and individuals are sanctified. Within the liturgical celebration, we recognize the presence of Christ in multiple ways. But, participation in the liturgy is not simply about what happens on Sunday. As the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy states, the liturgy does not exhaust the entire activity of the Church. Before people can come to the liturgy, they must be called to faith and conversion. Thus, as the liturgy makes Christ visible to us in various ways, we must acknowledge in our lives the many ways Christ is present, and similarly make Christ present to others. It is therefore, through this worship of God which sanctifies us, that we are sent forth to live out the mystery that has been celebrated in order to spread the faith of Christ in the world. We are called to preach the Good News of Christ in essence to live apostolic lives by living our faith. In other words, we are sent forth from the celebration to be a people who in their lives give praise and thanksgiving to God, to be a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God s own people (1 Pt 2:9). The celebration strengthens and prepares us to do just that, in order for us to come back and celebrate what we have lived. The Constitution rightly asserts then, that the liturgy is the summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed; at the same time it is the fount from which all the Church s power flows.

5 of what s happeningin our Collaborative! A Projection Into Our Future The generosity of the parishioners here at the Chelmsford Catholic Collaborative never ceases to amaze me. One of the projects as of late I have been working on is the installation of a projector at St. Mary s. After many months of researching options and the many uses of a projector for the Chelmsford Catholic Collaborative, it was time to move forward with trying to fund a project of this magnitude, on an already stretched budget. After much prayer, a very special lady by the name of Linda Harrington stepped forward and almost knocked me off my feet following a 7:00 am Mass. My Prayers were answered! Linda very kindly offered to make a donation that will cover the entire cost of the projector installation. I can t even begin to thank her for her extreme generosity. Many Churches of today have been bringing this technology to parishes for years, and now it s finally St. Mary s turn to be blessed with this wonderful tool. The possibilities are really quite endless for the uses of a church projector. Possibilities include: ways to bring music to the parish not currently printed in our Breaking Bread hymnals, a better way to view our annual Catholic appeal, communicate information for retreats (like our very well received Advent Retreat), assistance with talks presented by Fr. Brian, and many others. This will also serve as a big help for those who are hearing impaired. While these are just a few of the potential possibilities of a projector, most importantly it will help us promote the word of Christ through both spoken and sung prayer, furthering opportunities of evangelization. The installation process is currently scheduled to begin on December 17, As I sit writing this article, I am filled with great joy and an overall sense of pride, not just to serve as your Director of Music Ministries at St. Mary s, but first and foremost as a lifelong parishioner. Thank You, Linda Harrington! Advent Christmas Final Night! THIS WEDNES- DAY, December 19th Come and spend some quiet reflection time with us throughout Advent as we prepare to celebrate the birth of Christ. Advent: The Reason for the Season Ask a typical first grader about the Liturgical year, and you will likely hear about Christmas, Easter and Ordinary (or just the regular ) time. There is usually some confusion about the difference between Advent and Lent. What is very clear to them is that both are periods of intense waiting. Significantly, Advent is a season of Hope, whereas Lent is a season of Repentance. That sounds like a simple difference, but perhaps the confusion of our young friends reveals a deeper truth. The coming of Jesus in Advent is bound up with the reason for His birth to be the Savior of the World. The coming is threefold; we await the coming of Jesus in the Nativity, but we also live in joyful expectation of His Second Coming at the end of time, as well as rejoice in His presence in our midst as the risen Lord. This Advent, allow yourself to live in the reason for the season. PRAY READ Things to Do At Home Invest in an Advent wreath and have the kids take turns lighting candles and leading the prayer. 8 Collaborative Youth Ministry Program Courtney Callanan, Youth Minister ext 227 We will again be offering 2 trips for our young people in the Summer of 2019! Both trips are open to incoming freshmen through graduated seniors! This summer, we gather together to celebrate our call to be radiant followers of Christ. We will love as He loved, serve as He served, and boldly put our faith into action. James 1:22 reminds us that we are to be doers of the word and not merely hearers. By letting our light shine bright and being witnesses for Christ, we recognize that we are designed in His image and, as a result, equipped for greatness. We are called to illuminate our Catholic faith in our lives and the lives of others through our words and deeds. Each of us can be a source of light to a darkened world when we lead with love and keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, for He assured us in John 8:12 when He said, I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. With these words, you are invited to join us this year! 10 and now a word from Our Pastor

11 FROM OUR YOUTH MINISTRY AND CONFIRMATION COORDINATOR COURTNEY CALLANAN What do we need to do before we eat? I ask a group of teenagers, who I am sure have been eagerly awaiting pizza time since this retreat started. Wash our hands! they confidently respond. Ah that IS a good idea, but not what I was asking about, I say and am met with less certain looks about what should precede eating. With the help of some leading questions, we do eventually get to the answer I was looking for... pray, and do so before they dig into the Zesty s pizza (some of them also wash their hands). This scene has repeated itself countless times. It always makes me chuckle a bit at just how effectively this particular hygienic practice has been ingrained, while simultaneously lamenting that none of them seem to have developed a habit of grace before meals. However, in the spirit of Romans 9:28, We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. I do not think that these young cries of, Wash our hands! to the question of what we should be doing before a meal is wholly without value as an impulse when pursuing the Christian life. For a couple of hours after they, with germ-free hands, ate that pizza, we headed to Mass. There, at the Banquet of the Lord, we ate the Body of Christ. How happy I would have been if, preceding this Eucharistic Meal, I had asked our teens, What do we need to do before we eat? and received an excited response of, Wash our hearts! They were not wrong that having clean hands is a good idea when eating food, but even more important is having a clean soul when receiving the true food offered to us by God at Mass. We do this through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, which we are particularly encouraged to take advantage of during this Season of Advent. We are reminded again and again that the Season of Advent is not just about preparing for Christmas. It is about preparing for Christ. It is about seeking to always be ready for when we meet Him face to face, whether that be at the time of His second coming or at the time of our deaths. Now, we do not know when either of those hours will come, however, we do know that we will be encountering Christ, Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity, each and every time we receive Communion. Blessedly preparing for that expected encounter will also help to prepare for that unexpected hour, and one of the best ways to do so is, as the teens inadvertently alluded, to remember to Wash up!

It will be holy if I am. Its pews will be filled if I help fill them. It will do great work if I work. It will be prayerful if I pray. It will make generous gifts to many causes if I am a generous giver. It will bring other people into its worship if I invite and bring them. It will be a parish family of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith, of compassion, charity and mercy if I who make it what it is am filled with these same qualities. Therefore with the help of God, I will dedicate myself to the task of being all the things that I want my parish to be. Bless my journey, Lord God, that I might build the Church through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Ad info Church Support Chelmsford Catholic Collaborative
