4 After serving many years in our parish, it s time for members of the Collaborative Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) to be refreshed. Some will remain on the council, while others will be blessed with the time off. We are looking for new members who are willing to serve a three-year term. The group meets for approximately 90 minutes once a month, September through June, to discuss and advise the pastor on various issues involving each individual parish, as well as the Collaborative as a whole. You have between now and June 17th to make your nominations. Please take a form and nominate someone (or yourself), then drop your nomination in the ballot box. (Both nomination forms AND ballot boxes can be found at the both church entrances.) At the completion of the nomination process, all those nominated will be contacted to see if they are willing and able to commit to this adventure. From those that accept, two members will be chosen at random from each parish. ATTENTION YOUTH! Did you know that 4 seats on the council are reserved for our youth (two from each parish family)? If you are in grade 9-12, and would like to serve, please contact Courtney! Blessing of the Bikes This popular tradition in which motorcycle operators receive a blessing for safety for the coming season will take place NEXT Saturday June 2nd at 10:00 am St. John Parking Lot ALL MOTORCYCLISTS are invited to receive this special blessing! welcome to more A. Obviously, this is not an easy question to answer, and what I write will not be fully adequate since it would take the writing of an entire book to give a complete and definitive answer. Instead I would like to simply offer some foundational teaching. We must first recognize that the Church is an ordered society. It is arranged in a hierarchical array according to its priestly nature. As it is written in 1 Peter, we are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people he claims for his own to proclaim the glorious works of the One who called you from darkness into his own wonderful light. The mystical body of Christ is arranged such that through Christ, our High Priest, we share in a priestly life that is common to all by virtue of baptism. In particular, the priestly service of those in orders continues, sacramentally, all that Christ the High Priest does to make his members a truly priestly people. Hierarchy then, in a liturgical context and thus in an ecclesial context, is fundamentally about how the people of God share in the High Priesthood of Christ. Therefore, every Christian shares in the priesthood of Christ and must express that priesthood in the context of their life, but each does it differently. As Saint Paul wrote to the Corinthians, There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. The reality is that although men and women are different, each shares in the ministry of the Church to bring about the mission of Christ. But they do so in different ways. Many people look at this as an issue of equality and rights. The problem is that our understanding of equality and rights is different than the scriptural understanding. First, no one actually has a right to anything, except to be treated with respect and dignity. Everything we have comes from God, and it is up to God alone to decide what it is that we receive. All that we have is gift, and nothing is ours by right. Equality, in a scriptural sense, is not that every person should have the same opportunity to accomplish what they want. Equality, in a Christian sense, is that everyone is called to be an instrument of the Lord in some way. And each way that we are called to serve the Lord builds up the Body of Christ, and therefore has intrinsic value, for it leads both the person, and those they serve, to salvation. Each is expressing the priesthood of Christ through how they live out their unique calling by God to be His instrument. It is in this way that we are seen as equal in the eyes of God. It is not about what we are called to do, but rather, that we do what we are called to do, in order to please the Lord. The real issue is not that a woman s role in the salvation of the world is not important; we simply need to look to Mary. Rather, it is that the Church has not given the role of women the importance that it has always deserved. The final issue is simply who Christ called to be Apostles. The whole of the ordained ministry, which again is simply one piece of expressing the fullness of the priesthood of Christ, is centered on it being founded by Christ through the Apostles. The Church believes that Christ chose through the Apostles to create a male-only ordained ministry. Again, this does not mean that the role of women is not important or valued; God simply calls women in a different way to serve the mission of Christ and his Church and to lead others to salvation.

VINCENT de PAUL The Saint Vincent de Paul Society s special annual collection at St Mary s Parish is scheduled for the weekend of June 9th/10th. Our Society relies on the continued generosity of parishioners to provide funds to assist needy individuals and families living in the parish. For so many Chelmsford residents with no savings, any disruption in weekly income causes a budgetary crisis. During the past 3 months, we received 14 hardship requests from individuals who couldn t pay their rent or other bills. Fortunately, our Society had the resources to provide nearly $10,000 assistance to our struggling neighbors to address their financial problems. We expect many more requests by year s end. The Society members ask for your continued financial support during the annual collection to support our ministry. You may use the special collection envelope, or donate electronically through the Online Giving link found on the home page of the parish website. Please be assured that all donations underwrite our charitable mission and provide direct assistance to the needy in the parish. Also, SVdP requests your continued donations to the poor boxes located at each church entrance. Thank you. Ray Gatti, President

MONDAY, TUESDAY, THURSDAY: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM WEDNESDAY: 9:30 AM - 5:00 PM FRIDAY: 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM The love relationship that exists among the Persons of the Holy Trinity is both intense and intimate. As beautiful as this teaching is, it demonstrates how human language really pales in trying to capture the essence of God. The Father brings us to the creative, powerful, yet gently meticulous part of God who has brought mountains and hills into being, as well as each of his children. Still, the Father is more than this. The Son demonstrates the unconditional love of God filled with endless mercy and compassion. This love really understands the journey of the marginalized and the poor and has no use for created powers and structures that alienate and hurt people. But the Son is even more than this. The Holy Spirit is the breath of God who teaches wisdom and brings understanding, who governs the seasons and discerns the thoughts of human hearts. Yet the Holy Spirit is still more than this. We worship a God who is beyond and also intimately bonded to all that he has made, without whom nothing could be sustained in being. Praise the Holy Trinity!

11 page 11 FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF ST. JOHN MUSIC MINISTRIES JASON GAUDETTE ~ It is a wonderful thing to hear our church sing together. As Catholics, we are part of a long and deep musical history. Our chants, responses and hymns can be traced back to the earliest days of the Church, and our repertoire grows each passing year with new hymns and songs constantly being written. There is such beauty in our music, and to hear the sounds of us united in worship is a powerful experience. It feeds the soul. Hussein Janmohamed, a PhD choir conductor, explains it well: Studies show that singing together as a group has some deep benefits. Positive neurochemicals such as serotonin, beta-endorphins and dopamine are released in the brain. This has an anti-depressant nature. Our breathing and brain activity syncopates, and we begin to feel strengthened as a community. Combine all this with the Word of God and our Eucharist, and we have something more precious than words can explain. I encourage you to let your voices ring from the pews. It is true that some might sing more accurately than others, but the sounds most pleasing to God are sounds of unity, not perfection. Later this summer we will be hosting Taize Prayer Services at sunset. These prayer services are known by moments of silence, scripture and prayer, and gentle meditative singing. All are welcome to attend and take part. Also, this fall we will be forming an adult choir, set to sing at the 10:30 Mass, as well as Christmas, Holy Week and other Holy Days. Much more information to come regarding opportunities within our Music Ministry. In the meantime, let s continue praising and singing to the One who loves us. I help make it what it is. It will be friendly if I am. It will be holy if I am. Its pews will be filled if I help fill them. It will do great work if I work. It will be prayerful if I pray. It will make generous gifts to many causes if I am a generous giver. It will bring other people into its worship if I invite and bring them. It will be a parish family of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith, of compassion, charity and mercy if I who make it what it is am filled with these same qualities. Therefore with the help of God, I will dedicate myself to the task of being all the things that I want my parish to be. Bless my journey, Lord God, that I might build the Church through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. ST. JOSEPH CEMETERY 96 Riverneck Rd. E.
