The answer to this question, I think, depends on who you ask. If you ask my Mom, then yes, it is very important how you dress. I remember when I was kid growing up, we had our school clothes, play clothes and church clothes. When you got home from school, you went and changed. When you went to Church you knew exactly what to wear. It was very clean and very delineated. And I do believe in one sense that this is corroborated from the scripture when Jesus tells the parable of the wedding feast and the king speaks to one of the guests: But when the king came in to meet the guests he saw a man there not dressed in a wedding garment. He said to him, My friend, how is it that you came in here without a wedding garment? But he was reduced to silence. Then the king said to his attendants, Bind his hands and feet, and cast him into the darkness outside, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth. Many are invited, but few are chosen. Now, the parable is obviously not speaking about physical dress but rather whether we are clothed in Christ. At our baptism, we are clothed in a white garment which represents our life in Christ. At the end of time we are called to meet Christ with our clothing shining brightly. But the question we have to ask ourselves as we prepare for that moment is, what is our attitude, our inner disposition towards God? There is an old saying that you should dress for the job you want, not the job you have. And I think that somewhat applies here. I would say that God, in one sense, doesn t care how we dress. But can the way we dress affect our attitude? I would say definitely yes. The question you have to ask yourself is, do you really understand what is happening at Mass? We are not simply listening to another person proclaim readings to us. Rather, God is using that person to speak to us directly. It is not simply that we are receiving the Eucharist, but rather, we are coming into the very presence of the living God. God, the creator and sustainer of all, our very redemption, who has loved us into existence. God, who gains nothing from our existence, and yet chooses to love us in order to maintain our existence. This God chooses each and every time the Eucharist is celebrated to humble Himself and come to be with us. If our God is willing to do that, does it not seem right to show some similar level of humility and present ourselves as though we are meeting a king. We need to ask ourselves, what exactly do we think we are doing when we enter the Church? The answer to that will tell us what our attitude should be. If we are going simply to get something for ourselves, then we can dress how we feel comfortable. If we are going to prepare for eternity by worshipping the living God with our whole being, then that might cause us to pause and ask ourselves, am I dressing for the job I want? Am I dressing to show others that what I do here is one of the most important actions in my life? Am I dressing to humble myself before the living God? Am I dressing truly to meet Christ? Am I dressing to be a Saint?

11 Go your way; your faith has saved you. -Mark 10: 52 FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF ST. MARY MUSIC MINISTRIES JOHN ANTHONY VOLPE Bach or Boo Johann Sebastian Bach was a German composer, organist, harpsichordist, violist, and violinist born in Eisenach, Germany on March 21, Much of his busy life was spent as a family man, a father to thirteen children. He was a church cantor and Director of Music for many churches in Germany. He was considered to be the main composer of Baroque music, specializing in sacred and secular works. The Baroque period of the Roman Catholic Church began in Rome, Italy. It dominated church music liturgy from 1600 to The word Baroque, is derived from the Portuguese word barroco, meaning misshapen pearl. A misshapen pearl with all of its discoloration, indentations, and ornate appearance symbolized the music of the period that was filled with drama and tension. Unfortunately, Bach and his music disappeared after his death on July 28, Disappeared? Let me explain. Bach was buried in an unmarked grave, unnoticed and undiscovered until 1894, nearly 150 years after his death! As for Bach s compositions, well. they went unnoticed until the latter half of the 19th century! Johann Sebastian Bach s world renowned organ works have been gracing concert halls, chapels, churches and cathedrals for over 300 years. While I am a huge fan of Bach s compositions, there is one out of his 1,000 compositions in particular that resonates in my mind, especially around this spooky time of year, Bach s Toccata and Fugue in d minor! Although, it wasn t until the 1980s that the Toccata and Fugue in D minor was repurposed, setting the stage to countless ghostly sound tracks. It now can also be heard in pop media, such as Walt Disney s movie, Fantasia, video games, and rock music. This is quite comical being that Bach originally wrote this piece to be used as a sacred work for Mass. Through some further investigation, I also found that Toccata comes from the Italian word, to care, which when translated means, to touch. It is considered to be a virtuoso piece of music meant for fast moving fingers and plucked multiple instruments. Personally speaking, I know this to be true being that this Toccata is one I practice for fun and it frequently leaves my fingers in knots! Many of you may still be asking, What is this piece John is rambling on about? Well folks, question no longer! Members of our Accompanist Team René Minalga-Rheault will be playing the Toccata and Fugue in d minor at the 4:00pm Mass on our 3 manual Allen Organ in the choir loft, on October 27 th, Margi Sidari will be doing the same at the 11:00am Mass on October 28 th on our Yamaha Baby Grand Piano, followed by Arline Carboneau at the 6:00pm on our baby grand Yamaha Piano. The Chelmsford Catholic Collaborative is welcome to come, listen and let this sacred piece touch the spooky side of your faithful hearts. We need to pray everyday. No matter what. There s no way to soft sell this point. Just the opposite. If we re not doing it, we need to start. It doesn t matter at what stage of life we are, young or old; it doesn t matter where we are in our relationship with God, if we feel far from him or near, if we struggle with big sins or small sins, if we are angry at God or grateful. No matter what happens in our life, we still eat every day and drink water, and breath air. These are basic functions for living biologically. Prayer is the basic function of living spiritually. If the only time we pray is once a week on Sunday, then there is no way that the ultimate purpose of our life happiness and getting to heaven can be attained. It is impossible, like trying to live without drinking. And many people are spiritually starving and thirsting without realizing it. First of all, the prayer I mean here is not a technique. It is talking to Someone. It isn t just meditation to clear our mind and get in touch with our feelings, though this is important as we learn to pray more deeply. We need to pray everyday because God created us, he loves us and saves us, and especially because we need his help. God is, quite literally, always thinking of us; otherwise we couldn t exist! When we pray, we re simply making ourselves aware that Someone sees us, that Someone loves us, and that Someone wants to help us Many Catholics can feel bashful or embarrassed if they don t pray often, like they have no right to start if they haven t been doing it. Wrong! God is waiting for us. How can we start then? An easy and powerful way is to make the sign of the cross when we wake up or are getting out of bed, and say Jesus, help me and be with me today. Then we could say the Our Father. When we re going to bed we could do the same thing, and say Thank you for helping me today, and pray the Hail Mary. This can t possibly take more than a minute and a half, total. But it s a start, and we are letting God into our life, and allowing ourselves to get to know him. Even if there are some serious problems in our life real problems we can begin to pray like this. God created us to bless us and give himself to us. We have to learn to accept this Gift, without which our life has no meaning, purpose, nor potential for authentic happiness. Young people and teens need to learn this live or die truth. There is too much darkness in the world and even in our own hearts to shut out the Light that belongs to us in Jesus. We need to pray every day, even if for only a minute and a half, no matter what. We need air to breath; we need God to live.

I help make it what it is. It will be friendly if I am. It will be holy if I am. Its pews will be filled if I help fill them. It will do great work if I work. It will be prayerful if I pray. It will make generous gifts to many causes if I am a generous giver. It will bring other people into its worship if I invite and bring them. It will be a parish family of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith, of compassion, charity and mercy if I who make it what it is am filled with these same qualities. Therefore with the help of God, I will dedicate myself to the task of being all the things that I want my parish to be. Bless my journey, Lord God, that I might build the Church through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Ad info Church Support Chelmsford Catholic Collaborative
