4 welcome to more DID YOU KNOW that the donkey is the only animal in the world to have a cross-shaped mark across its back? Legends tells us the donkey that carried Jesus into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday followed him into Calvary. Appalled by the sight of Jesus on the cross, the donkey turned away, but could not leave because of his love for Jesus. In reward for the loyal and humble love of the little donkey, the Lord caused the shadow of the cross to fall across his back and left it there for the donkey to carry forevermore, as a tribute to the loyalty and love of the humblest of God s creatures. A. It is true that we believe that angels do not have a gender. Angels, unlike human beings, are pure spirit. This is why when people say that a human being has become an angel in heaven, that is incorrect. Any human being in heaven is a saint. It is true that human beings, until the resurrection of the dead, while in heaven only contain their spiritual nature. But when Christ comes again and the resurrection of the dead occurs, at that moment human beings will become complete, joining the physical and spiritual together in heaven. Hence, angels and human beings are not simply a different species: they are a different order of creation. As such, angels can never become human and humans can never become angels. But when angels revealed themselves to human beings, they took on the appearance of a somewhat human form. They did this in order for human beings to be able to comprehend the message that is being given to them from God. The word angel means messenger. And each angel has a specific function to perform based on their rank. There are nine ranks of angels: Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones, Dominions, Virtues, Powers, Principalities, Archangels and Angels. Seraphim are caretakers of the throne of God and lead the worship of God in heaven. Cherubim guard the tree of life and the throne of God. Thrones are living symbols of God s justice and authority and, listening to the will of God, present the prayers of human beings to Him. These three are of highest rank. Dominions oversee the lower ranks of angels. Virtues are those whom God works through to bring forth His signs and miracles. Powers help to keep the cosmos in order. These three are of the second order of angels. Principalities are protectors of nations, groups or institutions such as the Church. They act as educators and guardians. Archangels and angels deal with the immediate reality of human life and they are messengers of God. These three are the lowest rank. When it is a most important function to be done or message to be given, usually that would be given to an archangel. Thus, according to the teaching of the Church, angels do not have names in the same way that we do. In fact, not every angel even has a name. Angels only receive names in the context of the nature of the duty or function they are called to perform. The most famous angels from the Bible are Michael, Raphael and Gabriel. The names they are given speak about their function. Michael means who is like God. Gabriel means God is my strength. Raphael means God is healer. Michael gets his name because he led the armies of God against Satan who led a rebellion against God. Michael, in a sense, stood in the place of God in the battle. Gabriel gets his name because he a brought great message of salvation to God s people. The message Gabriel proclaimed was to strengthen those who bring the message into the world. Raphael got his name because he brought God s healing into the life of Tobit and Tobias. The reason we associate the names with males is simply that we chose that as our convention. They could just as easily have been female names. It is how they essentially came to be represented through the centuries that connected their names to males.

Cuddled up in their PJ's, these kids (along with moms, dads and some grandparents) enjoyed popcorn, hot chocolate, cookies and, even a visit from Santa himself! But best of all! On Sunday, December 23rd, 192 pairs of socks were delivered to the Lowell Transitional Center to assist meeting the needs of our homeless neighbors. These socks were the admission tickets given to us by the youngsters who attended Movie Night! It truly is a season of giving! Our MANY thanks to the Chelmsford Catholic Collaborative ACTS CORE for hosting this event. Watch for your tickets next year! It was truly Our worship space at both parishes was simply beautiful for our Christmas celebration. I don t think we realize just how much of an impact our environment has on our worship experience. THANK YOU to Michele Lando (and her St. Mary team) and Maureen Gearin (and her St. John team) for sharing he gifts of their time and talent with us so that we could more fully experience the birth and worship of the Christ Child. Also, thank you to ALL music ministry teams for bringing the birth of the Christ Child to the upper heights of worship. They say singing is praying twice. I think we can all agree that our collaborative family prayed way more than that! Pictured below is the St. John Children s choir who sang at the 4:00 pm Christmas Eve Mass in the Church. In today s Gospel reading (MARK 2: 1-2) we are told the visit of the magi greatly troubled King Herod and all of Jerusalem. Updates and repairs were made to Fr. Colletti s bathroom in the rectory. The cracked and deteriorated concrete window sill in the parish hall was repaired. The electrical outlet in the New Parish Center Sitting Room was repaired. The second heater was installed on the southwest side of the church. A new backflow valve was installed in the hall kitchen grease trap. St. John BUILDING A light pole in the parking lot was hit and knocked over. It will be replaced soon. By the way, what happened to the tree? Over the past few years, we have had ongoing issues with the restrooms in the hall. After cleaning the pipe proved to be unfruitful, we sent a camera down and were able to see that there were numerous breaks. The breaks were caused by the weight of the tree roots sitting directly on top of it, which then allowed further root growth INTO the pipe, causing all the clogging issues we had been facing. All this resulted in the loss of the tree, which creates additional work to be done. We have relocated the concrete walkway to line up closer to the elevator entrance, which should prove to offer easier access for those who are handicapped and/or use wheelchairs. Come springtime, the final piece landscaping!

8 Collaborative Youth Ministry Program Courtney Callanan, Youth Minister ext 227 Both of our Summer 2019 trips are open to incoming freshmen through graduated seniors! This summer, we gather together to celebrate our call to be radiant followers of Christ. We will love as He loved, serve as He served, and boldly put our faith into action. James 1:22 reminds us that we are to be doers of the word and not merely hearers. By letting our light shine bright and being witnesses for Christ, we recognize that we are designed in His image and, as a result, equipped for greatness. We are called to illuminate our Catholic faith in our lives and the lives of others through our words and deeds. Each of us can be a source of light to a darkened world when we lead with love and keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, for He assured us in John 8:12 when He said, I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. 11 page 11 January 6th, 2019: Epiphany of our Lord, Jesus Christ FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF ST. JOHN MUSIC MINISTRIES JASON GAUDETTE As we celebrate Christmas, Holy Family, and Epiphany, I find myself meditating on Joseph, for he has always been an inspiration to me. When social convention called for a divorce, Joseph refused to do so. When it came time for Mary to give birth, Joseph found the manger and stood by her, ready to care for a child that was not his own. And when there was danger, Joseph took his unconventional family to Egypt, escaping the evils of King Herod, and brought the child and Mary to safety. He is a fine example of Love as described by 1Corinthians 13:4-7: 4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. In my own life, I seek to follow the example of Joseph. I seek to never divorce anyone from my love when it is needed. I seek to see all people, young and old, as children of God, while standing by them, offering protection, guarding their dignity. I myself have no children to call my own, but Joseph gives me the lessons on how to be a father. Happy Epiphany!

13 Liturgical MinisterTraining As one accepts a role of ministry for liturgy, he/she must understand the privilege and responsibility attached to their ministry. The role is to be fulfilled with all due reverence and dignity warranted in serving Christ. When embracing a role for liturgy, one embraces the commitment to dependability, time for preparation each time he/she serves, and time for ongoing development and enrichment. Fr. Brian will be presenting a 5-week training session in order to assist and inspire us to be at our best in the Liturgical roles God has called us to.
