Tom Fettke BENEDICTION POSTLUDE Now Thank We All Our God J.S. Bach, arr. V. Fox Mark 10:17-30 (NIV) As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. Good teacher, he asked, what must I do to inherit eternal life? Why do you call me good? Jesus answered. No one is good except God alone. You know the commandments: You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, you shall not defraud, honor your father and mother. Teacher, he declared, all these I have kept since I was a boy. Jesus looked at him and loved him. One thing you lack, he said. Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me. At this the man s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth. Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God! The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God. The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other, Who then can be saved? Jesus looked at them and said, With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God. Then Peter spoke up, We have left everything to follow you! Truly I tell you, Jesus replied, no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age: homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields along with persecutions and in the age to come eternal life. CONGREGATION PLEASE STAND (AS YOU ARE ABLE) **Assisted Hearing devices and large print hymnals are available for use during traditional services. Please contact an usher if you would like to use one of these. 3

4 October 14, 2012 WE HAVE GATHERED AS A FAMILY OF FAITH Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost 9:15 a.m. The Church at Litchfield Park, aspiring to be as inclusive as the love of God, welcomes everyone who comes to the doors of this House of Prayer for all People. Gorton CALL TO WORSHIP: L: Jesus said, Come unto me, all of you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. P: He continued, Take my yoke upon you for my burden is easy and my load is light. L: As we worship today, remember that God does not call us to do more than we can and will not burden us with more than we can bear. P: Lord, help us carry what you have called us to bear, and remove those burdens from us that we have taken upon ourselves that we cannot handle. Amen. HYMN Jesus, I Come No

5 CONFESSION OF THE CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY PRAYER OF CONFESSION: (In Unison) Loving God and Savior, we bow before you in humility as to who you are and thankfulness for the blessings you have given us. As we ponder the scripture today which speaks about the man who was asked to give everything to follow you, we are dismayed. We look at you as the giver of all things, not the taker of everything. Remind us this day that you do not require from us more than we can give or give us more than we can bear. Help us to let go of those things which bind us and to release ourselves from the burdens that weigh us down. In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray, Amen. PASTORAL PRAYER LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. 7 Announcements for October 14, 2012 Take time to check out what s happening Ordination Thrift Shop Properties Survey New Member Orientation Missions Vander Laan Study Hallo-Palooza Church Picnic Youth and Children Information Booth Wednesday Night Programs Women s Fellowship ORDINATION - MARK YOUR CALENDAR FOR TWO IMPORTANT DATES! Mark your calendar for two important dates in October. Next Sunday, October 21 st, at 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary a congregational meeting has been called by the ordination council to ratify Pastor Kerri s ordination. This meeting will include a recommendation by the ordination council, testimony by individuals about Pastor Kerri, the presentation of her ordination paper, and a period when members of the congregation may ask questions and make comments regarding her calling and ordination. Following this, the congregation will cast their votes. A vote of a quorum of the congregation (approximately 100 members) is necessary for her to be called. For this reason, please make every effort to be present and cast your vote. Assuming the congregation s approval of Pastor Kerri s call, her Service of Ordination will be held on Sunday, October 28 th, at 7:00 p.m. also in the Sanctuary. The Executive Minister of the International Council of Community Churches, Rev. Don Ashmall, and the President of the ICCC Board of Trustees, Rev. Bruce Merton, are planning to participate in this worship service. This is the first time our church has ordained a pastor, and it provides an unprecedented opportunity to not just observe but actively participate in the process. Additionally, as the congregation actually calls the prospective pastor to ministry, you will be part of the voice of God in the life of Pastor Kerri and the history of this church. 7

8 PROPERTIES SURVEY TODAY! Your opinion is important! Please stop by Souers Hall after today s service to complete the Properties Survey. This important survey will indicate if the congregation feels facility improvements are needed to meet the needs of our growing community and ministry. SPOTLIGHT ON MISSIONS Today Bob Solis will be sharing information about our long standing relationship and history with Open Arms. He will be located in Souers Hall between the morning services to answer any questions regarding the center and how you may get involved with this wonderful mission. Please stop by and say hello to Bob and welcome him today. HALLO-PALOOZA Do you need something to do on Halloween? Hallo-palooza will occur on Wednesday, October 31st, from 5:30 7:30 p.m. in the church s parking lot. We need YOU! Bring your car, some candy, and your favorite Halloween décor. When you arrive, you will receive a parking space. Then, set up your lawn chair, open your trunk (and candy bags), and wait for kids to walk through and trick-or-treat in a safe place. For those who would like to decorate their trunk, there will be a decorating contest. There will also be a hay maze, grave yard, and plenty of frightening sights for the kids as well. Please sign up in Souers Hall if you would like to participate. We want to make sure that we have enough parking spaces. If you have questions, contact Pastor Kerri at the office during the week (623) or info@churchatlitchfieldpark.org. YOUTH OUTREACH The youth group will travel to the Agua Fria Food Bank on October 20 th. We will meet at 8:30 a.m. at the church, work at the food bank, and return at 12:30 p.m. Please pick up a permission slip in Souers Hall. See Pastor Kerri if you have any questions. 8
