3 OFFERTORY In the Garden arr. Weber DOXOLOGY No. 815 Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing No. 11 Come, Thou Fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing Thy grace; streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise. Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above; praise His name- I m fixed upon it- Name of God s redeeming love. BENEDICTION POSTLUDE Because He Lives Traditional ACTS 4:31-37 (NIV) After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly. All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God s grace was so powerfully at work in them all that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales and put it at the apostles feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need. Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means son of encouragement ), sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles feet. CONGREGATION PLEASE STAND (AS YOU ARE ABLE) Assisted Hearing devices and large print hymnals and bulletins are available for use during services. 4 WE HAVE GATHERED AS A FAMILY OF FAITH Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost September 11, :15 a.m. The Church at Litchfield Park, aspiring to be as inclusive as the love of God, welcomes everyone who comes to the doors of this House of Prayer for all People. CHIMES PRELUDE There s Something About That Name arr. Weber BRINGING IN THE LIGHT CHORAL CALL TO WORSHIP Praise the Name of Jesus Roy Hicks, Jr. WELCOME, REGISTRATION and ANNOUNCEMENTS SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT Rev. Lynne Kammeraad CALL TO WORSHIP L: Today we gather in the name of Jesus Christ to worship God and contemplate how, as the church, we should function. P: God has not only called each one of us as children, but has called us to work together in order that we might testify to God s love and presence with us. L: Understanding we are not alone and we are called all of us to work together is not only about testifying to God s presence with us but also is the key to our individual fulfillment in life. P: We stand ready to work together as God leads us to worship, serve, and fellowship in the name of Jesus Christ. HYMN Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven No. 1 (Verses 1 & 2) PRAYER OF THE CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY Confession of the Christian Community: God of all people, we come together today to understand more about how you would have all of us work together as the church. We acknowledge that there are times when we focus more on our faith as individuals instead of as a community. Enlarge our vision, we pray, to understand how much more we can do together than alone. Help us to put aside our individual preferences in order to work together for the betterment of all. 4

5 L: Let us now pray together the prayer that our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ taught us: P: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. ANTHEM Lord, Make Us Instruments of Thy Peace David A. Gerig SCRIPTURE READING Acts 4:31-37 L: The Word of the Lord. 9 ADULT BIBLE STUDY Adult Bible study begins meeting again this coming Tuesday, September 13, at 10:00 a.m. and Wednesday, September 14, at 6:45 p.m. in Souers Hall. Please bring a Bible if you have one, a pencil/pen, and paper/notebook. The Bible study season will consist of a series of journeys through the Old and New Testament. Our first journey will take four weeks, as we travel from Goshen to Sinai. We will be introduced to a God who is significantly different than Pharaoh and the gods of Egypt, as we see God s mighty hand and outstretched arm in the coming of the plagues, the Israelites departure from Egypt, the parting and crossing of the Red Sea, and explore how God s people grew in obedience as they began growing together in community. After the fall break, our journey will take us from the desert (Litchfield Park) to Jerusalem. Our tour guide for this five-week leg of the journey will be Dr. Terry Daughtrey, assistant to Rabbi Moss from Temple Beth Shalom. Professor Daughtrey will be guiding us through an exploration of the Jewish Festivals. When we return from the Thanksgiving break, we will be going on a three-week journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem as we explore the Christmas narrative in great depth through Mary and Joseph, Mary s visit to Elizabeth, Joseph and Mary s walk to Bethlehem, and the birth of Jesus. After the New Year we will spend six weeks traveling with Jesus as he is baptized, tested in the wilderness, begins his ministry, and makes his way to Jerusalem, and is crucified. Prior to the beginning of Lent we will begin a three-week journey from the inside to the outside, as we explore a number of the spiritual disciplines. As we practice the disciplines and God s love blossoms within us, it won t take long for God s love to manifest itself toward others in our words and actions. The last two journeys will involve travelling from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth as we explore one of the many letters written to the early church. Like the first disciples, we will also explore Jesus invitation to come and to go, consider what it looks like to live counter-culturally, and what it looks like for us to live as living stones as we continue the journey. LIFE INVENTORY SHEETS Our Christian faith assures us that death leads to eternal life with God. Meanwhile, family members, friends, and the pastors are sometimes in need of certain information that if available, could help them deal more appropriately with the grief and death of a loved one. The church office has Life Inventory Sheets that can assist your family during that time. If you would like a form to fill out, please contact the office at (623) or info@churchatlitchfieldpark.org. 9

10 CHRONIC ILLNESS PEER SUPPORT GROUP A chronic illness can be anything from cancer, diabetes, heart disease, fibromyalgia, arthritis, lupus, chronic fatigue, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson s disease, Crohn s disease, reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD), or complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). It could also be a condition such as chronic migraines or back pain from a car accident. If it affects you for more than a few months, it is often considered chronic. The Chronic Illness Peer Support Group will meet the second Sunday of each month from 11:45 a.m. 12:30 p.m. in the South Fireside Room beginning on Sunday, October 9. Richard Wilharm, Kathy Bilak (Physician Assistant specializing in Radiation Oncology), and Pastor Lynne hope to provide an opportunity and the space for people living with a long-term illness to get together and share stories and experiences, while giving each other empathetic, emotional, and practical help. CAREGIVER SUPPORT GROUP Caring for a loved one, though rewarding, can also be very challenging. In many cases, the family is the primary source of support for an individual who is no longer able to care for him/herself alone. The responsibility is often very demanding of time, energy, health, and resources. Beginning Sunday, October 23, from 11:45 a.m. 12:30 p.m. in the South Fireside Room, Kathy Bilak (Physician Assistant specializing in Radiation Oncology) and Pastor Lynne will be hosting a support group for caregivers on the fourth Sunday of each month. The goal of the Caregiver Support Group is to teach and encourage self-care, as well as provide a forum of support and understanding from others facing similar situations. 10

11 INTERESTED IN MUSIC? MESSIAH, PART I For the second year, The Church at Litchfield Park will present Messiah, Part I, for the public on Friday, December 16 and Saturday, December 17. We would like to extend an invitation to sing it with our Chancel Choir and others from the community. Rehearsals will be on Wednesday evenings and membership in the Chancel Choir is not required. If you are intrigued, please sign the interest sheet in Souers Hall between services. JUBILEE CHRISTIAN SINGERS If you like to sing, consider joining the Jubilee Christian Singers. This group performs at assisted-living centers in the area and spreads the joy of music and the grace of the Lord to all who hear them. Directed by Mary Meese, the group performs approximately once per month, generally on a Friday morning. As an added benefit, members generally go to lunch as a group afterward. The time commitment is minimal but the reward is tremendous. Membership in any other CLP music group is not required, nor is there an audition. If you are intrigued, please sign the interest sheet in Souers Hall between services. 11
