1 C R O S S P O I N T S January 24, 2019 Hurricane Relief Trips Four months. It has been four months since Hurricane Florence wreaked havoc on eastern North Carolina. In these past four months, many of us have celebrated Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year s and even enjoyed a long weekend as we celebrated and remembered Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. As we have celebrated, decorated and entertained in our homes, many in Eastern N.C. are still displaced due to Hurricane Florence s widespread flooding and damage in the Carolinas and beyond. In the words of one Eastern N.C. resident, For the people who think that, Oh, it s OK. Everything is back to normal. That s not true. But to the people who say, I m going to go help just in case it s not back to normal, thank you a million. Thank you infinity. Thank you one million times over. The outpouring of relief efforts from this church and the United Methodist Church as a whole was amazing. Thousands of pounds of food, water, health kits, cleaning supplies, tarps and more were donated and distributed to those impacted. Friends, our work is not done! We have been through the rescue phase and the recovery phase. Our focus now will be on the very lengthy rebuilding phase. Our Apex UMC Family has committed to traveling to Fayetteville one weekend every month to rebuild. No training is required and all the supplies will be provided. We need many hands to help get people back into their homes. Our next trip is Saturday, Feb. 2. You can register at apexumc.org/hurricane-relief-trips. If February isn t conducive for you, mark your calendar for our upcoming trips: March 2, April 6, May 4 or June 1. Each of our campuses will host a trip - our Apex, Peak and 519 campus contacts are listed below. Gather your friends, family and neighbors. Let s join together and help our fellow brothers and sisters as they try to maintain their new normal. Another resident of Eastern N.C. said, We lost everything and then to have to try to build up and still keep your same morale every day and still trying to keep going, and the fact that it s four months later and I m still in this situation, meaning I m still trying to recover, it s just a hard situation. Hope to see you on Saturday, Feb. 2! If you have questions, please contact Jack Rosko at jcrosko@gmail.com. For more information, please visit our hurricane relief Facebook page at facebook.com/groups/ contact: Carrie West - cd5242@hotmail.com Peak contact: Matt Daut - mddaut@gmail.com WHAT S INSIDE: A Way Forward Town Hall Gatherings 2 Pastoral Transitions 2 News/Events 3 Children/Youth News 3 Bulletin Announcements 4 SCRIPTURE CARD Jan. 24-Feb. 2 TH Luke 15: F Luke 15:22-27 S Luke 15:28-32 S Matthew 5:4348 M 2 Kings 10:1-8 T 2 Kings 10:9-14 W 2 Kings 10:1517 TH Romans 14:1-4 F Romans 14:5-9 S Luke 6:27-36
2 P a g e 2 A Way Forward Town Hall Gatherings We will hold a town hall gathering on Feb. 10 from 4-4:45 p.m. in the CLC gym in preparation for the upcoming denominational session of General Conference, Feb During this special session of General Conference, our global denominational leadership will consider the report of the Commission on a Way Forward, along with a recommendation from the Council of Bishops, regarding the United Methodist Church views and policy related to human sexuality. Childcare available by advance registration at apexumcfamily.org/childcare. To find out more about the Commission or to review the latest recommendations visit umc.org/wayforward. An All-Family Prayer Service w ill be held on Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary, the day following general conference. Please make plans to join together as we pray for our denomination, our leaders, our neighbors, our communities and our church family. Apex/519 Pastoral Transitions Weekend Pulpit Swap This weekend, we have the wonderful opportunity as a church to hear from pastors across our the Apex UMC Family! On Sunday, Jan. 27, Pastor Owen Barrow (519) will preach in our contemporary service, Pastor Kyle Meier (Peak) will preach in our traditional services, and Pastor Brittany Absher-Baer (Fiesta) will preach in our contemplative service. We are so blessed to be part of a family in which we can share our gifts with one another. Join us as we continue through our Year Without Fear series and receive the blessing of hearing from three incredibly gifted preachers and teachers! Thank you Pastor Owen! Pastor Owen has served the Apex UMC Family for the last 12 years, first as an associate pastor at Apex, then as the campus pastor of 519. At Apex, Owen offered leadership in developing robust systems of adult discipleship, including helping to start several Sunday School classes and small groups that are still meeting today. He also offered his unique voice to the pulpit, often sharing with us humorous and creative ways to engage scripture and live our lives as faithful followers of Jesus. He carried these gifts to 519, the congregation he helped start seven years ago. In early March, Owen will take a much-deserved sabbatical before starting his new appointment in our Annual Conference. Reception for Pastor Owen Join us on Sunday after the 11:00 services in Crossroads for a reception for Pastor Owen. We wish Owen and Chambliss well in their new season of ministry! Thank you Pastor Angelo! Pastor Angelo rejoined the Apex UMC Family in 2017 and has been an incredible gift to our Apex campus for the last two years. His considerable gifts for preaching, teaching and organization have served our church well, and will continue to serve the Apex UMC Family when he becomes the campus pastor at 519 on April 1. Although we will miss him at Apex, we are so thankful to keep him as part of our church family and believe he will bring just the right gifts at just the right time to help 519 continue to grow and thrive in its mission and ministry. Next Steps A sub-team of our Staff Parish Relations Committee is meeting regularly with Pastor Tim and is in contact with our District Superintendent to help find the right person to serve alongside the pastors, staff and lay leadership of our Apex campus. That sub-team includes Allen Hicks (SPRC chair), Mendi Nieters (Admin Council chair), Amy Dean (SPRC rep), John Harriett (SPRC rep), Mike Roberds (outgoing Steering Team chair), Sheila Ahler (incoming Steering Team chair), and Lynne Garrison (interim Executive Director). If you have any questions about the process, please feel free to reach out to Pastor Tim (tim.catlett@apexumcfamily.org) or Allen Hicks (sprc@apexumcfamily.org).
