3 From Pastor Lauer The angels spoke privately to Mary and Joseph concerning the birth of Jesus. It was the same with Zechariah and Elizabeth concerning John the Baptist. The shepherd s witnessed the heavenly host of angels, but the Star of Bethlehem could be seen by all the world. The wise men inadvertently brought the news of Jesus birth to Herod the Great who killed the infant boys of Bethlehem in response. Jesus revealed His role as the Messiah in the synagogue in Nazareth and was anointed by the Holy Spirit and proclaimed the Son of God by the voice of the Father from heaven on the day He was Baptized. From that day, the revelation of His identity as the Promised Messiah and Savior of the world was begun. This is the season of epiphany which means to reveal or to make known. By the authority with which Jesus taught, by His command over nature and angels and demons, by the miracles which showed He possessed the power of God Jesus was revealed to be God made man. Since Easter comes late this year, we have a full eight Sundays after Epiphany, culminating in the Transfiguration of Jesus before the beginning of Lent. This is a very important season for all Christians because it parallels that part of us which still asks, Who is Jesus? and What does He mean for me? Many people, we will see, came to the firm conviction that He is the Christ, the Son of God, the center and focus of all history, as Peter would come to confess to Jesus, You are the Christ. The Son of the Living God. This is a necessary conviction to understand why our Lord had to suffer and die, what His suffering and death mean for us, and why the Resurrection means everything. For if Jesus is not God-Made-Man for us, then His story is His alone and does us no good. But since we also have come to believe that Jesus is the Son of God, then His suffering, death, and resurrection will mean everything for us! 3

4 It s no wonder that those who might skip from Christmas to Easter wonder how God s message, the Good News, holds together and gives us hope. But when we follow Jesus through Epiphany and Lent it becomes clear that Jesus was here for us. That He brings us grace and mercy and peace from God. That He offers Himself on our behalf so that His victory over death and the grave mark our own victory over death and the grave. We might compare this to witnessing the birth of a child and then skipping years into the future to witness the child s sorrow at the parents death. In general, that may make sense. But if we were to see all the years in between as the parent gives all the are for the life of their child then it becomes clear why the bond between parent and child is so strong. So it is with witnessing our Lord s compassion for us during Epiphany and His Passion for us during Lent. He is pouring Himself out for us, even to the point of death, that we might live forever. It is perfect love which conquers all evil. So this is Epiphany, the season to get to know Jesus before He gives His life to save us. What we see in Him and come to believe about Him now will determine how we will see Him and understand what He is doing on Good Friday which, in turn, will give birth to true Joy on Easter Sunday! This is not the time of year to turn away or be distracted because this is the season which creates faith in Jesus, God s Son and our Savior. It s the faith that we ll need on Good Friday and Easter to understand why those days mean everything to us. Youth Bake Sale February 10 th in the narthex following both morning services. Support the Youth and get a sweet treat for your valentine or yourself. All proceeds will benefit the youth attending the National Youth Gathering in Minneapolis in July. 4

5 From Pastor Matheny The nations shall see your righteousness, and all the kings your glory, and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the LORD will give. You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed Desolate, but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her, and your land Married; for the LORD delights in you, and your land shall be married. For as a young man marries a young woman, so shall your sons marry you, and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you. Isaiah 62:2-5 We are poor miserable sinners. No doubt about it. We speak these familiar words about ourselves nearly every week, and they come to characterize the way that we think of ourselves as Christians (especially as Lutheran Christians). We see ourselves as weak, as helpless, as deplorable, as completely depraved. But in this passage the prophet Isaiah reminds us that in fact, that is not how God sees us. In fact, Isaiah says that The Lord delights in us. He tells us that God rejoices over us as a newlywed groom rejoices over his bride! How amazing, and what a stark contrast with poor miserable sinners. We should keep in mind, though that this isn t just some sort of divine pep talk. Isaiah isn t simply telling us to keep our chins up. He isn t trying to boost our self-esteem. Quite the opposite. God rejoices over us not because we are so wonderful in ourselves, but because He has made us wonderful by the blood of The Lamb. The Groom sees His bride as beautiful not because she is naturally so, but because He has made her that way. 5

10 Pipe Organ, Audio, and Video Projects: The pipe organ has been removed to the organ builder s workshops in Maple Grove for refurbishment and repairs and is scheduled to be installed again some time in May. In the mean time, we ll use the grand piano in front and the electric piano in the balcony to lead us in worship. With the change in music, many have already commented on the wonderful opportunity to pay more attention to joining our voices in praise both in the liturgy and in the hymns. This can be a time to listen to the voices around you and to focus on the words of our liturgy and hymns which confess our faith and proclaim the Good News from God in Jesus, Our Savior. The new audio and video systems have also been installed and we ve nearly gotten all the kinks worked out. There still may be a few and we beg your patience. Those who watch our services on cable TV should notice a greatly improved picture and smoother operation as well as better sound. Those who worship in the sanctuary are also enjoying clearer sound which aids in understanding God s Word and reduces the annoying glitches we had been experiencing. The combined pipe organ, audio, and video repairs and upgrades have a total price of $200,200, of which all but $21,000 has already been raised thanks to many individual contributions of all sizes and the generous support of the Endowment Fund. We re very hopeful of paying for the entire project before the work is completed. Our thanks to so many who have seen the need and offered their gifts while continuing to support the general fund as well. Book Club Book Club will continue with Eugene Vodolazkin s wonderful Laurus in February. Please join us in the fireplace room at 4:30 on February 10 th and 24 th for a captivating story and meaningful discussion. 10

22 From the Stewardship Committee: The season of Epiphany focuses on how God was made manifest in the flesh of Jesus. The church spends time hearing of the miracles, the signs and wonders, of Jesus in the world. And this made plain to all that Jesus was who He said He was: He was the Second Person of the Holy Trinity, the onlybegotten Son of the Father, in the flesh. For the Word became flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:14). It is revealed for all the world to see that Jesus is God in the flesh. It is made manifest by His words and His work, by what He said and by what He did. And these belong together, for the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. Jesus is the Word and will of God in the flesh, that is, He is the walking, talking, enactment of God s Word. It is no different for us. We are called not just to believe in God in hearts, but also to trust in God in word and deed. As James wrote: But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves (James 1:22), and again, What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead (James 2:14, 17 18, 26). Our faith is lived out in works for our neighbor. Our trust in the Word and will of God is lived out not in word only, but also in deed and in truth. In other words, the Epiphany of the Lord creates in us an epiphany of our faith in our works of obedience to God who commanded them. By this, our faith is made manifest to the world. It is, as Luther wrote of faith: Faith is a divine work in us. It changes us and makes us to be born anew of God (John 1). It kills the old Adam and makes altogether different people, in heart 22

23 and spirit and mind and powers, and it brings with it the Holy Spirit. Oh, it is a living, busy, active, mighty thing, this faith. And so it is impossible for it not to do good works incessantly. It does not ask whether there are good works to do, but before the question rises, it has already done them, and is always at the doing of them. He who does not these works is a faithless man. He gropes and looks about after faith and good works and knows neither what faith is nor what good works are, though he talks and talks, with many words about faith and good works. Faith is a living, daring confidence in God s grace, so sure and certain that a man would stake his life on it a thousand times. This confidence in God s grace and knowledge of it makes men glad and bold and happy in dealing with God and all His creatures. And this is the work of the Holy Spirit in faith. Hence a man is ready and glad, without compulsion, to do good to everyone, to serve everyone, to suffer everything, in love and praise to God, who has shown him this grace. And thus it is impossible to separate works from faith, quite as impossible as to separate burning and shining from fire. Beware, therefore, of your own false notions and of the idle talkers, who would be wise enough to make decisions about faith and good works, and yet are the greatest fools. (Preface to the Book of Romans) So, then, let our faith be active by God s power in the Word through the Holy Spirit. And let then our faith be made manifest to the world by what this faith does: serving our neighbor in church, in the family, and society with the works of faith in time, talents, and treasures. 23
