From Pastor Lauer I watched a video of motorcycles like my own being built in Marysville, Ohio. I came away with the realization that Honda doesn t make motorcycles; rather, they re made by lots of people who pour the steel, handle every screw and nut, run every wire, assemble the gears and on an on until finally someone drives it out of the plant. It s not enough to simply have an assembly plant full of parts and machines. It takes people with attention to detail and a commitment to quality to produce the result. I just want my bike to work like its supposed to, but others don t see a bike. They see lots and lots of important parts working together. In the same way, the Holy Spirit doesn t make Christians or Children of God as though they come fully formed from the factory. Instead, our Christian faith and that of our children is the result of many, many people who are gathered, equipped, lead, and supervised (so to speak) by the Holy Spirit. He has given the place, the resources, the people, and the instruction that is needed to remake us into the Children of God. But simply having all these things isn t enough to get the job done. It takes people with attention to detail and a commitment to quality to accomplish what God has commanded us to do: to make disciples of every generation, nation, and race. So imagine what would happen if someone in that motorcycle plant decided that they weren t going to grease the gears or install the ignition? What if they installed a defective battery or left off the break pads? You d pay a lot of money for a product that didn t do what it was meant to do. A Christian congregation is not intended by God to be a warehouse for parts or cold storage for finished products. Instead, our Lord has told us to make disciples. What is your role in this assembly plant for new Christians called Our Savior s Lutheran Church? What skill or resource has God given you to contribute to this task? There are many, many different tasks that need to be accomplished. While I was a Pastor in Michigan, General Motors went bankrupt because they had more cost for retiree s pay and 3

benefits than they did for current workers. At one time, retirement after 30 years gave a worker ten or fifteen years of leisure. But now, most former workers had pay and benefits for as many and more years than they had worked if they started at age 18, worked thirty years to age 48, and lived to age 78 as most people now do. Congregations can also go bankrupt, in a sense, if they are more about serving former workers than they are about carrying out their primary mission which is making disciples. At some point, each person graduates from being the product to being the producer, much like children raised on a farm may one day take over the farm and raise their own children. Sure, God is still working on each of us: improving, fine tuning, still training, and still equipping. But if this economy called the Christian Church is to work, we must still be about paying attention to details and being committed to quality in the work which the Lord has given us: it is the work of Making Disciples. August is the month for gearing up for the Church s busy season. In just weeks our weekly program of worship, Sunday school, Bible classes, Confirmation instruction, music rehearsals, and so forth will be in full swing after Labor Day. Ten weeks later, we ll come to Thanksgiving, Advent, and Christmas. The calendar this month seems pretty bare, but compare it to next month! Loving and serving one another in times of joy (like births and weddings) and in times of sorrow or crisis (like illness, death, or broken families) isn t seasonal. And praising God, coming to Him with our prayers, and supporting missions and missionaries is as constant as the days and weeks and seasons which come and go as long as we live. Those things are as basic and essential to life as breathing and eating and sleeping. So there are things in our life of faith which are constant and there are things in our life of faith which are seasonal; but all of them serve the purpose of carrying out what Our Savior has given us to do. And no task, no matter how small, is unimportant. Large or small, everything must be done for the sake of each generation, each year, and each and every Child of God. 4

From Pastor Matheny Our Father who art in heaven. What does this mean? With these words God tenderly invites us to believe that He is our true Father and that we are His true children, so that with all boldness and confidence we may ask Him as dear children ask their dear father. These words (taken, of course from the Lord s Prayer with the brief explanation coming from Luther s Small Catechism) are an incredible gift. They preach to us an amazing, abundant, incomprehensible, and nearly unbelievable truth; that God, the creator of all things that are or were or ever will be is actually our Father. They encourage us to look to him in the same way that we look to our dear earthly fathers. That of course means that we can, and should, turn to God with all of our needs. Not just the concerns that we see as big, but even and perhaps especially with the ones that we think of as trivial. He is there for us, He cares for us, He loves us. Knowing this, we can turn to God as Dr. Luther says, with all boldness and confidence. We know that God loves us, so we can ask for anything. He might say no, of course, but nothing that we ask for can change the fact that He loves us. Accessions & Losses Accessions: Breanna L. 10 What is Stephen Ministry? In both the Old and New Testaments, God gave prophets and apostles and evangelists and pastors for carrying out the work of the Holy Ministry. What they do is called Holy because it is God s own work of preaching and teaching, speaking and forgiving on His behalf. These things are called Ministry because they are done in service to others. But there are other kinds of service or ministry as well. Specifically, these are the ways that we minister to others; that is, ways that we love and serve one another. Some Christians serve in the congregation by assisting the pastors in teaching, admonishing, encouraging, and serving in worship. These would be Elders and Sunday School teachers, ushers and choirs. Other Christians serve indirectly - not working with people, but with the things that go on in the background like trustees and organists and cooks and bookkeepers. The New Testament also speaks of a particular service of people who are called Deacons. We have a Deaconess in our congregation. We also have a Board of Deacons. They do the work of Stephen whom we are told about in Acts chapters 6 and 7. They were given the responsibility of serving the human needs of others which the Lord specifically charged the church to do: to care for widows and orphans, the poor, those who grieve, those who are ill, and so forth. 10

Stephen Ministry is a program of training, equipping, and sending particular members of the congregation to love and care for others on behalf of the congregation. Every Christian can (and should!) do these things, but those who do so on behalf of and in the name of the whole congregation should receive training, be set apart, be equipped, and be sent by the congregation. Deaconess Lisa Brand and Rebecca Kitzmann have now received an intensive, week-long training and the resources to bring this training and supervision to others in our congregation. Next, some of our members will receive 50 hours of training and then be commissioned to bring the love and service of the congregation to those with human needs. This doesn t replace the spiritual work of the Pastors, Elders, and teachers; but addresses other areas that still need attention. So watch for Stephen Ministry starting up in our congregation. We already have two Stephen Leaders and now we will select and train volunteers to be Stephen Ministers. Once trained and commissioned, they will be sent to bring the love and service of Christ and His Church to those in need among us. Do you have a concern for those who are hurting, those who are alone, those who need help in times of trouble? Are you willing to undergo training and then be sent on behalf of our congregation as you are able to do? Please speak with Lisa Brand about volunteering as a Stephen Minister. The rest of us are praying for you to volunteer and to take up this important service. In Loving Memory Jeanette Manderfeld Beyer October 22, 1926 ~ June 20,

Articles for the September VOICE are due by Friday, August 18 th at 4 pm 12 Music Notes Next to the Word of God, music deserves the highest praise. The gift of language combined with the gift of song was given to man that he should proclaim the Word of God through Music. Martin Luther I can t believe it will be a year since I began coordinating music and directing the adult choir at Our Savior s. As this journey is now complete for me the Lord continues to guide me in other ways of serving Him. I will be forever grateful and filled with joy that He blessed me with this opportunity. I pray it was a year that brought each of you closer to the Lord through the gift of music. As the new year begins may it continue to strengthen you in faith and joy. I will continue to serve on the organ committee until the project is complete. My husband Steve and I are beginning a new chapter in our lives as we plan to travel to Mesa, Arizona in the winter months to enjoy warmer weather. 19 From the Stewardship Committee Winston Churchill reportedly said that we make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. According to Churchill then, our lives are defined less by what we have gotten, and more by what we give away. Our Lord s life is defined in this way. He gave completely of Himself for us. He became man for us. He taught the truth of God s Word. He healed those with many and various diseases. He died the death that we deserve because of sin. He gave of Himself in order to save us from sin, death, and hell. And so, it is that by giving completely of Himself, He got for Himself us, making us citizens of His eternal kingdom by grace. As it was for Jesus, so it is also for us. We get more from giving than we do from simply getting. For giving softens our hearts and frees us from the grip which the worries of this world and making a living has on us. For when we are singularly focused on making a living, we are singularly focused on what we get. That mindset begins to bleed into all areas of our lives our relationships with friends and family, with neighbors and coworkers, and with the Lord. It shifts our focus from asking the question How can I be a friend, family member, neighbor, and servant to others to asking the question what have they done for me lately. We become more selfish instead of selfless. But when we give, we do not have less, we have more because when we give we join in the bond of friendship and family, the bond of service to those around us out of love for them. And love is the fulfillment of the Law. It is the nature of God Himself, for God is Love. Thus we are reflecting the divine nature. As Jesus said It is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35). 19
