3 From Pastor Lauer Can it really be that simple? Can God s promises and blessings really be so easy to receive? You know: the forgiveness of sins, peace, hope, joy, all the rest of those earthly blessings with eternal life guaranteed as well? And what about things like strength for living each day, the promise that He will hear and answer our requests made in prayer? How about His guidance for making those big decisions in life or His promise to multiply our blessings when we use them for blessing others? Can it really be so simple that all we need is to believe in and trust in Jesus as our Savior and Lord? Well, the answer is simply yes. At great cost to Himself, Jesus has made certain that all God s promises and blessings can be ours simply by believing and trusting in Him! He s taken care of everything! I know that sounds too good to be true: in our world there always seems to be some hidden catch when someone offers a free gift. But there are no tricks here no disappointments hidden in the small print. Our Lord s innocent suffering and death has paid our ransom in full; and His resurrection has shown that His work is complete, that He has gone the full distance, that He now has authority over heaven and earth, and that everything He has said is true. And this is what Jesus has said: God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. He also said: He who believes and is Baptized shall be saved. He told the thief on the cross beside Him: Today you will be with me in paradise. Our Lord s straight-forward promises make it plain that He has done the whole job of ensuring forgiveness, life, and salvation for all who will receive it by faith. Perhaps that s the hard part having faith; believing that there s no hidden catch or additional requirement in the 3

4 small-print. But if we should doubt, there is ample evidence of just how simple it is. First, we have His plain words repeated boldly throughout the Scriptures. I ve given you a few examples of these above. Second, there is the testimony of hundreds and even thousands of others who have gone before us some of them still with us who have spent a lifetime learning His promises and seeing them in their own lives. Third, our Savior offers down payments on what is still to come as we begin to follow Him in our daily lives so that we can be even more confident in what is still to come. Easter and the Christian life are about all these things together: the Word and Promises of Jesus, the testimony of other Christians, and the challenge of living each day by faith so that we can say for ourselves with all certainty and confidence: I know that my Redeemer Lives! Our Savior gave everything so that you can have that kind of certain faith which believes His Word, trusts in Him, looks forward to even greater things to come. Organ Project Update In December, we reached our Phase I goal of raising $50,000 for the organ fund, thus ensuring the $50,000 match from the Endowment Fund. Since December, we have raised another $33,600 bringing us to $133,600 received for the 2019 organ repair and refurbishing project. This means that we are now only $10,600 away from the total contract amount! After that, we hope to raise an additional $10,000 for contingency (there s always something unforseen) and $26,000 for work on the balcony area itself. Please continue remember the organ fund in your regular offerings without forgetting our general fund needs also. 4

5 From Pastor Matheny Greetings from Israel! Or as it is sometimes called, the Holy Land. Throughout my preparations for my course that has taken me to Israel, I have been thinking about that name the Holy Land. I have wondered if it isn t a little bit pretentious. Certainly there is something special about the plot of land situated between modern day Egypt, Jordan, and Syria right along the Mediterranean Sea. That particular land between Africa and the Middle East. That land has been a hotbed of political activity for millennia. That place has seen some of the most influential people in all human history. Patriarchs, prophets, apostles, and evangelists called it home. Not to mention that is the place where The Truth Himself lived, taught, died, and rose. If any land deserves to be called holy, that land must qualify! But in fact, that land is holy but only because God has chosen to work there through His people. And my friends, when you think of it that way what land isn t holy? Each and every place where you set foot is holy land. All your paths have been trod by saints. Because our Lord has called, gathered, enlightened, and sanctified you all the work that you do is His work. Everywhere you go God is at work, and He is using your hands! In ancient times the Lord called His people and set them to work in Israel, and He used them to make that land holy. But in these last days, our Lord has sent His people out to the ends of the earth so that the whole world, even and especially Mankato Minnesota, might be holy. I don t know if you realized this or not, but you live and work in a most holy land. Praise the Lord that He has made it so! 22 From the Stewardship Committee: St. Paul teaches, Let the one who is taught the word share all good things with the one who teaches (Galatians 6:6). And again, he says, Do you not know that those who are employed in the temple service get their food from the temple, and those who serve at the altar share in the sacrificial offerings? In the same way, the Lord commanded that those who proclaim the gospel should get their living by the gospel (1 Corinthians 9:13 14). In other words, ministers of the gospel are supported by the offerings of those who are served by them. And this is how the Church lives even now. It is standard practice. But this deserves closer examination. For it instructs us not just that we are to give but also what we are to give. And it does so with four little words: In the same way St. Paul is building his case for supporting the preachers of the Gospel with the sacrificial giving of individual members on the example of the Old Testament people who supported the Levites with their offerings and sacrifices. We re to support the Gospel ministry in the same way. But how did the Old Testament people support the Levites? Moses records this: You shall tithe all the yield of your seed that comes from the field year by year. And before the Lord your God, in the place that he will choose, to make his name dwell there, you shall eat the tithe of your grain, of your wine, and of your oil, and the firstborn of your herd and flock, that you may learn to fear the Lord your God always (Deuteronomy 14:22 23). The Levites were supported by the tithe, 10 percent of all the yearly yield of that which was harvested. 22

23 Does that seem like a lot? Does it surprise you that St. Paul instructs us that we are to support the New Testament Gospel ministry in the same way? If it does, ask yourself: is the Church s job in the New Testament bigger or smaller than the Levites job in the Old Testament? Back then there was one Temple, and the ministry was almost exclusively located in one nation among the descendants of Abraham. Jesus calls us to teach and baptize all nations (Matt. 28). And there are churches and ministries all around the world. How could we support this new Gospel ministry with anything less than the Israelites supported the Old Testament ministry? Of course, we are free to give more, for we have received more than those in the Old Testament. We have received the fullness of God s revelation, the fullness of His salvation, the fulfillment of everything that God promised to do. For we have received Christ, God s own Son, in the flesh, who took upon himself our sins and in exchange gave us his righteousness. The Father claimed us as his own in Holy Baptism. He gathers us together in the place where his name dwells to feast on the first fruits of the resurrection, the risen and living body and blood of his Son, our Lord, Jesus. He reminds us that we are His, that all things are ours because we belong to Him. He blesses us here in time with physical and spiritual gifts. In the same way, and in response to his fatherly divine goodness and mercy, we gladly give to those who proclaim to us the excellencies of him who called us out of darkness and into his marvelous light. For once we were not a people, but now we are God s people; once we had not received mercy, but now we have indeed (1 Peter 2:9 10). 23
