1 The Voice The monthly newsletter of Our Savior Lutheran Church 1103 N Broad St., Mankato, MN 56001SEPTEMBER 2017 Education Sunday September 10 Sunday School Classes will begin afresh for Toddler Age on up through adults. Plan to meet in the sanctuary at 9:15am to meet your new teachers find your new room. Another highlight will be the 3 rd graders receiving their own Faith Alive Student Bible at the beginning of the 10:30am service. Teachers will also be installed this day. Special Voter s Meeting Sunday, September 24, :45 a.m. in the Sanctuary A special meeting of the Voters Assembly is set to consider the full proposal for maintenance and upgrading of our pipe organ. More than 50 years old, some intricate parts have begun to fail and other are in need of updating in order to ensure another 50 years of leading us in worship and praise. Whereas replacement cost would exceed $850,000, repair and upgrading seems wise. The Voters will be asked to accept the builder s contract and additional costs, to approve a contribution of $50,000 from the Endowment Fund, and to begin a program to raise about $126,000 for the project. Watch for more information in the weekly Sunday bulletins.

3 From Pastor Matheny Hallowed by Thy Name. What does this mean? God s name is certainly holy in itself, but we pray in this petition that it may be kept holy among us also. How is God s name kept holy? God s name is kept holy when the Word of God is taught in its truth and purity, and we, as the children of God, also lead holy lives according to it. Help us to do this, dear Father in heaven! But anyone who teaches or lives contrary to God s Word profanes the name of God among us. Protect us from this, heavenly Father! With these words Dr. Luther expounds on the first petition of the Lord s Prayer. First, he assures us that God s name is holy in itself. That is to say, the holiness of God s name does not in any way depend on our prayer. God s name is holy in and of itself, with or without us. But with this petition we are asking God to help us to honor it as the holy name that it is. How do we keep it holy according to Dr. Luther? Well, as with most things, hallowing God s name springs from God s own Word. We learn to honor God s holy name when we hear God s Word proclaimed and taught in all its Truth and Beauty. But hallowing God s name goes beyond just hearing and learning. Keeping God s name holy among us also means leading lives that are in accord with God s teaching in His Word and not in contradiction to it. In fact, according to Dr. Luther living our lives contrary to God s Word is the surest way to profane God s name in our midst. Protect us from this, heavenly Father! 4 From Pastor Lauer Of all the traits and abilities that we pass on to our children in our genetic code, among them are not our education and experiences. Each generation must receive its own education and have its own experiences. And so each Fall we prepare our children and send them off to school so that they will learn for themselves to read and write and all the rest. They won t always have us here to do those things for them and so they must learn these things for themselves. The same is true for all that we have learned and experienced about our faith. As much as it would be helpful, children are not born knowing the Ten Commandments or the words to the song Jesus Loves Me. Neither can they pick these things up by themselves just by being around us. These things must be taught in the same way that we teach the alphabet and basic math. To accomplish the necessary task of teaching our children, we have established schools in both our communities and in our churches. There, we provide teachers and curriculums and resources. We work together with parents to ensure that our children learn everything they need to be happy and successful in the years which are ahead of them. Teachers present the basic information through lessons and assignments while parents see to it that their children attend, prepare their lessons, and learn to apply what they have learned to every-day life. We do this with math, science, and reading; so it should only make sense that we also do this with Bible knowledge, basic doctrine, and Christian living. Our spiritual curriculum is founded upon the six chief parts of Christian education: (1) The Ten Commandments, (2) The Lord s Prayer, (3) The Apostles Creed, (4) Baptism, (5) Holy Communion, and (6) The Office of the Keys (confession and forgiveness). For each of these six topics, our children are pointed to the stories and teachings of the Bible so that they also learn to read the Bible for themselves. 4

5 As we faithfully send our children to school and encourage their education, so we should also faithfully see to it that we send our children to Sunday school, bring them to the Sunday services, and encourage them to grow in their faith by speaking with them about what they are learning and helping them apply it to life. We do it with earthly subjects which will have an impact on their earthly lives. We should also do it with heavenly subjects which will have an impact on their eternal lives. Christian Education should not be an after-thought or an option for our children or for ourselves. Instead, Christian Education should be at least as important and deliberate as secular education. For if we do not see to it that our children are taught the faith (as our Lord has commanded us to do), then we deny them the same benefit which we received. Toddlers This fall the toddlers will be focusing on creation. God made the sun, moon, and starts, the plants and animals, and each one of them! Preschool The 3 and 4 year olds will be focusing on Jesus. They ll learn about who Jesus is and what He has done for them. They ll learn of the teacher, healer, and Savior who is full of compassion. Elementary The elementary will be in the Old Testament studying the kings and prophets. God does some mighty miracles proclaiming Himself as the King of kings. He sends messages through His prophets. Some listen but others resist. Middle School The 6-8 th graders will be in two classes. One for boys and one for girls. They will be digging into the Ten Commandments this fall. They ll consider how those effect everyday life, and why we have them. 5

11 God s Love in Acti n We at Our Savior s are looking to expand our Caring Ministry. We want to engage our members in using their gifts for the benefit of the church. Stephen Ministry is a part of that plan. With all the things going on in the world, it can be easy to say I can t make a difference. But if I befriend, support, and give care to just one person who is in need, I can make a difference a big difference. Stephen Ministry gives me the opportunity to put my faith in God into practice. Maury from Naperville, IL In Stephen Ministry, Christian caregiving skills are enhanced through training. The Stephen Ministers are then paired with others who could benefit from having someone walk alongside them during a rough time. They are there to listen and pray for the individual. If you would consider being used by God in this way, contact Deaconess Lisa Brand ( or lisa@oslcmankato.org) to learn more and perhaps even apply to be a part of this caring ministry. Our classes are scheduled to begin Thursday, September 14 and run weekly from 6:30-8:30pm. 11

22 From the Stewardship Committee Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might (Eccl. 9:10). God bids us to be faithful in the tasks He calls us to do. He calls us to be members of a family (husbands and wives; fathers and mothers; sons and daughters). He calls us to be members of society (those who govern and those who are governed). And He calls us to be members of His family, the Church (those who preach and teach and those who hear and learn). Each of these callings from God places a duty on us. As members of a family, husbands are given the duty to die for their wives as Christ gave His life for His bride, the Church; while wives are given the duty to respect their husbands and submit themselves to them as the Church does to Christ. Fathers and mothers are to raise their children in the fear and admonition of the Lord, teaching them the Ten Commandments, the Creed, the Lord s Prayer, and the Scriptures concerning Baptism, Confession, the Office of the Keys, and the Lord s Supper. Children are to honor their parents throughout their lives, and even when their parents are no longer alive, serving and obeying them, loving and cherishing them, and speaking well of them. As members of society, God calls those who govern to bear the sword, that is, to punish those who do evil those who live contrary to God s will and to reward those who do good those whose lives are lived in conformity with God s will. Those who are governed are to obey their leaders as to the Lord Himself, for their leaders bear the sword of God s temporal justice for a purpose. As members of God s own family, the Church, He calls those who preach and teach to do so in faithfulness to His holy Word. To preach and teach the Law of God to convict the hearts of hearers of their sin and to encourage, admonish, and exhort them to do good works in accordance with God s will. They are to preach and teach the Gospel, the full forgiveness of their sins accomplished by Christ and received through faith, not by works. They are to administer the means of grace in accordance with the Gospel and the Word of God. They do all this for the young and old alike, for 22

23 those who are near and far off. Those who hear and learn are to submit themselves to their preachers and teachers. They are to support them by their prayers and their gifts. Each of these callings from God places a duty on us. They make a claim on our presence, our prayers, and on our time, talents, and treasures. So, Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might (Eccl 9:10). Pray for your family, for your government, and your church. Give of yourself by means of your time, your talents, and your treasures to your family, your government, and your Church. That is what it means to be faithful in the tasks that God has given us. That is what it means to do it with all your might.
