2 +GATHERING+ WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS CONFESSION & FORGIVENESS (stand as able) In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Forgiving God, We come to you to confess. We are sorry for when we forget the good news of your love. We forget that your love is for the poor, for people in prison, for the blind. We forget that those who suffer and those who are oppressed are your beloved. Help us to shout out - with our voices and our hearts and our lives - help us to shout out the good news that Jesus was sent to love us and teach us how to love. We pray all this, because you promise to hear all our prayers, you promise to forgive us, and you promise to transform our hearts. Amen. 2

Open our minds and our hearts, so that we can hear the good news, and then go out and share it with others. Show us how to love one another. In the name of Jesus the Messiah, amen! +WORD+ Gospel Reading Luke 4: Then Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and a report about him spread through all the surrounding country. He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by everyone. When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he began to say to them, "Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing." All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They said, "Is not this Joseph's son?" He said to them, "Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, 'Doctor, cure yourself!' And you will say, 'Do here also in your hometown the things that we have heard you did at Capernaum.'" 3

4 And he said, "Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in the prophet's hometown. But the truth is, there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a severe famine over all the land; yet Elijah was sent to none of them except to a widow at Zarephath in Sidon. There were also many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian." When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with rage. They got up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they might hurl him off the cliff. 10 Phone Tree: We re trying to streamline communication in the event of churchwide news. Most members are on our list, and receive a mass in these events. We also post info on our Facebook page, when appropriate. We realize not everyone can be reached this way; therefore, we re creating a church phone tree. If you don t have , or want to be notified by phone as well, please sign up by the office, or call to be on the list. Once complete, we will send further info to these members. Please contact Pr. Katie or Candy with any questions, and update us with any changes to your contact information. Keep Warm! It takes many layers to brave the outdoors. However, many students at Vermillion Community College have never faced winter in northern MN, and come to school without proper clothing. Keep Warm! is a program that gives winter clothing to any VCC student who has a need. Students are offered coats, hats, gloves, gators, and boots - all for free. Last year alone, Keep Warm! provided boots for 50 students. Through monetary donations, Keep Warm! is able to purchase boots, hats, gloves, and gators from Ely Surplus. (coats are gathered through donation only.) Keep Warm! is a way for us to connect with VCC students and build relationships to show them that we (as churches, and as a community) truly care about their wellbeing, and want them to find in Ely a place to call home. Please consider donating (men s coats are the biggest need!) to this worthy program. Confirmation Meals: Once again, we are requesting volunteers to provide meals on Wednesday nights for our Confirmation youth. The full group is 7 youth and 1 adult. The sign-up sheet is posted outside the office. Thank you! Giving Envelopes for 2017 are available to be picked up on the table outside of the library. A reminder that they have no numbers or names this year. Please add your name to any cash offerings so we can give you credit for the donation. Let the office know if you have any questions. Any members interested in representing the congregation as voting members at the Annual Synod Meeting April 28-30th, contact Pastor Katie or a council member. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask Pastor Katie or Candy Geiger (voting member from last year) at the church office. 10

11 Bread Bakers Needed to bake communion bread for our Sunday services. The recipe is fairly fail-proof, and one batch makes enough for 3-4 weeks. Sign up outside the office. See Candy for the recipe Winter-Spring Graceful Dining: If you are interested in participating in Graceful Dining for February-May 2017, please sign-up on the sheet posted on the outer office glass. Groups of 3-4 couples will be formed to share dinner in each others homes over the next several months. Deadline to sign-up is Sunday, January 22. Contact BJ Kobierski for more information. This is a wonderful way to meet and socialize with your Grace family. You do not need to be a member to participate. We welcome new couples. 11
