2 CATHEDRAL OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION ALBANY Second Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading: The prophet s words, from one of the last chapters of Isaiah, set the stage for our journey during Ordinary Time. These words give us confidence that the Lord delights in his people and will intimately accompany us on the journey of faith as a bridegroom rejoices in his bride. Restoration will be ours in God as it was Zion s. Second Reading: God is one and the same, and from him comes the myriad of diverse gifts and works. The same Spirit-the Spirit of the Lordproduces these gifts. From the ability to communicate wisdom, to faith, to gifts of healing, to prophecy, and discernment of spirits and interpretation of tongues, these marvelous gifts come from one and the same Spirit. The Corinthians struggled to maintain the unity of their community of faith in light of these gifts. The Corinthians wanted to prioritize these gifts in order of importance and set people against each other in light of which gift they received. This would only service to divide the one God, the Lord, and the one Spirit. Gospel: Jesus turns water into wine as the first of the signs that reveal his glory in the Gospel according to John. The signs help us to see Jesus as the fulfillment of the restoration of Jerusalem. We know from the beginning of his ministry that the one who will call his disciples and us to follow him fulfills God s covenant to Israel. On this initial Sunday of Ordinary Time, we begin to believe anew in him as the disciples began to believe for the first time. WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is held from January 18 to 25 each year. This eight day period begins with the feast of the confession of St. Peter and ends with the feast of the conversion of St. Paul. This year s theme Justice, Only Justice, You Shall Pursue (cf. Deuteronomy 16:20) was chosen for its powerful message of promoting truth, equality and unity By finding ways to pray together during this week, we join with all people around the world who are praying, reflecting, studying, and gathering together to celebrate and pray for Christian unity.
