4 Dominican Retreat, cont d Monday, Feb :30 pm or Tuesday, Feb :30 am Presentation: Lincoln s Religion Presenter: Thomas Hoffman is married and has two adult daughters. After serving as a VISTA volunteer and a Legal Aid Attorney, he began his private practice of law and has maintained his law offices in Manhattan. In addition to being a civil lawyer, Tom has a big interest in the Civil War and has a private library of more than 1,000 books on Abraham Lincoln. We all struggle as Lincoln did to try to explain the suffering we, at some point, have endured. In his youth, Lincoln was considered a religious skeptic. He never formally joined a church, but as Lincoln faced life s challenges, his personal family tragedies, his severe bouts of depression, and then presiding over the horrific Civil War, he developed a deep personal relationship with God. It was this personal relationship that helped him endure his suffering and guided him to the moral and ethical heights we admire. This year we will trace Lincoln s religious evolution to the time shortly before his death when, in his second inaugural speech, Lincoln understood what we must all come to understand, that the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous together. $15.00/session.
