2 THE ORDER OF MORNING WORSHIP 5 TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME CELEBRATION OF THE LORD S SUPPER 10:00 AM FEBRUARY 5, 2017 THE FIRST NOTE OF THE PRELUDE begins our worship. Please use the prelude time to turn your attention to God s presence and help. As worship is not an obligatory offering unto God, but a natural response to God s goodness, take time to consider all the reasons, big and small, for which you are thankful unto God. Nurturing our relationships and friendships in fellowship is essential to our life as a congregation, so please continue to do so following our time of worship. Those who are able are invited to stand. FOCUSING UPON GOD S PRESENCE AND VOICE WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS PRELUDE Deck Thyself, My Soul, With Gladness J. HYMN #487 When Morning Gilds the Skies LAUDES DOMINI PRAYER OF PRAISE AND ADORATION CALL TO CONFESSION AND SILENT CONFESSION AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Leader: Friends, let us confess our faith! ALL: We believe in the triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, who gathers, protects and cares for the church through Word and Spirit. This God has done since the beginning of the world and will do to the end. We believe in one holy, universal Christian church, the communion of saints called from the entire human family. We believe that Christ s work of reconciliation is made manifest in the church as the community of believers who have been reconciled with God and with one another. We believe that unity is, therefore, both a gift and an obligation for the church of Jesus Christ. We believe that through the working of God s Spirit it is a binding force, yet simultaneously a reality which must be earnestly pursued and sought. HYMN #579 Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, Is now, and ever shall be, World without end. Amen, Amen. There is no prerequisite to join in the meal of this table other than to confess that we are all imperfect and stand in need of God s grace revealed in Christ. People: We come to the table so that we might be in communion with our God and Savior, knowing His gracious kindness, being set right and commissioned to our calling. We come to the table so that we might be in communion with each other setting down all that divides us, being graceful unto each other, helping to carry each other s burdens and bearing witness to the reality of God s goodness gracefully offered to all. Leader: This is the LORD s table. Christ sits at the head, and people of every nation, race and creed will be welcomed from east, west, north and south to be seated in His presence and receive the gift of his grace, his life and his illumination. People: Let us joyfully eat and drink together at the table of our Savior!
3 MORE THAN 25 YEARS AGO, the Souper Bowl of Caring began with a simple prayer from a single youth group: Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful of those without a bowl of soup to eat. Since that day, more than $125 million has been raised for local charities across the country through Souper Bowl of Caring. It has become a powerful movement that is transforming the time around the Big Game into the nation s largest celebration of giving and serving. Through this mission, young people learn what it s like to make a positive difference in the world as they collect food, raise money and volunteer to work in charities that provide shelter to the homeless, food to the hungry and compassion to those in need. Be part of this movement that is sharing God s love with those in need. Please give generously on Super Bowl Sunday. Every dollar donated goes to Second Harvest Food Bank our 2017 Souper Bowl of Caring charity of choice.
