A man was walking in the park one day when a young boy came racing around a tree, almost running into him, and said, Dad where s Amy? Instantly he realised his mistake and said, Sir, I m sorry, I thought you were my dad. I made a mistake. The man replied, That s okay son, everyone makes mistakes! As the boy walked away the man noticed that he had a limp and the features of a child with Down s syndrome. After having walked about ten metres, the boy turned around and started retracing his steps toward the man. My name is Billy, he said. You were very nice to me. Can I give you a hug? After giving the man a hug, he said, I just wanted you to know that you are my friend and I will pray for you. I have to go now and find my sister, Amy. Good-bye. The man had tears in his eyes as he watched Billy limp to the playground to play with his little sister. After Billy went down the slipperydip, his mother came over and gave him a big hug. It was obvious that he was very special to her. Sometimes God uses the Billy s of the world to break down our walls of sophistication to show us what genuine kindness is all about. We must never underestimate the impact that a hug, smile or encouraging word may have on a person s day- or even their life. 2 Ministry Partnership: Dear Friends It has been a great pleasure to welcome The Rev. Yvonne Gunning to our midst. I know many of you will have met her at least briefly by now and I hope you get to know her over the next two years. Its great to have Jeff Gunning also being a part of our Friday night discussion group and attending church in Tumut when he can. Elsewhere in this publication Yvonne is introducing something of herself, which I am sure you will be interested to read. The arrangement we have made with Gundagai to enable us to employ Yvonne, is fairly unusual and so is worth me commenting on. It is a growing trend for someone to work across two parishes, and we have seen this in our region with Batlow and Tumbarumba sharing a minster and of course with our Uniting Church brothers and sisters, Jo Marr was shared between Tumbarumba and Tumut. What makes our arrangement unusual is that Yvonne is in charge at Gundagai while here she is essentially in a training position. This is possible because Yvonne has considerable ministry experience having worked in paid lay positions in churches for many years and in those areas where her knowledge or experience is lacking, I am able to provide some teaching and mentoring as she goes about her work. That said, I operate with the view that Yvonne and I are in a ministry partnership. Yvonne brings not only experience that I could never have but gifts and talents from God that I will never have. There is much I can learn from her and perhaps more importantly much that God can teach me by the opportunity of working in this manner. What is God like? I once heard a church leader describe how shortly after moving in to a new residence that went with his new appointment, he heard some noises over the fence. Hoping to meet his new neighbour, he popped his head over the fence and sure enough there was a man working in the garden. The conversation went something along theses lines: Hi, I`m (lets say, Bill) your new neighbour. I`ve just started working at the church down the road. Just thought I`d say hello. Do the neighbourly thing, you know. Well I`m (lets say, Fred). Don t bother talking to me about God. I just cant believe in God. Ok, but just so I know, what is this God like that you don't believe in? Oh you know, always making life difficult for people then getting angry when you stuff up. That s if he bothers with you at all. Mostly he is just off in heaven and couldn't give a rats.. Oh that s alright then Fred, yeah I don't believe in that God either. I better unpack a bit more. See you later. We all have our own ideas of what God is like. However, other than at church, I wonder where, or in what situation you are most likely to have God come up among the topics of a conversation? It might not be over the fence as in the story above. Is there a particular place where it might be more likely or is it more likely around certain circumstances such as sickness or life changing events? At the right time people may be more ready than we think. Sometimes all it needs is a short phrase like God Bless you or I`ll say a prayer for you. Indeed, such God conversations can be a blessing to both Christian and non-christian. May God bless each of you this day. Peter -2-

3 APPOINTMENT OF ASSISTANT CURATE AT ALL SAINTS' All Saints' Parishioners have been pleased to welcome Rev'd Yvonne Gunning, and husband Jeff, following the appointment by the Diocese of Yvonne as Assistant Curate to the Parish of Tumut (3 days per week) and as Deacon in Charge of the Parish of Gundagai (2 days per week). Yvonne and Jeff are living in the Rectory at Gundagai. Yvonne commenced ministry in Tumut on 26 April and a welcome morning tea was held in the Parish Hall on Tuesday 3 May to give parishioners an opportunity to meet and welcome her to our Parish. Yvonne is involved with worship services, children s ministry through teaching school scripture and children's and family ministry to maintain and develop contact with families contacted through baptisms, Kiddy Link Playgroup and in developing pathway ministries to bring families into the worshipful life of the Parish. Yvonne gives the following brief summary of her life: I grew up in a non-church family in south western Sydney and became a Christian at a camp at age 12. I was very keen to learn about Jesus so I caught a train every Sunday morning to attend the local Rev d Yvonne Gunning and Rev d Peter Blundell Methodist church. I attended youth group and Sunday services every week and soon made lots of Christian friends (who gave me a lift to church). Throughout high school I often found myself in positions of leadership and so I began to attend leadership training at my church and with a Christian camping organisation. I trained as a high school teacher after finishing year 12 and was actively involved in Christian leadership roles in my local church, beach mission and Christian camps. I married Jeff in my last year of university and we have two beautiful daughters, Ann and Beth. After teaching for a few years I felt God calling me to serve in Christian leadership, so I trained as a Church Army officer. I have served for the last twenty three years in various Anglican churches including Yagoona, Menai, Baulkham Hills, Figtree and Bega and five years as a consultant and trainer for Anglican Youthworks in Sydney Diocese. Whilst at Figtree parish I led two mission teams to Christchurch New Zealand to assist after the earthquakes. I have served in specialist roles with children and families, chaplaincy in an Anglican school as well as pastoral care and women's ministry. I have a passion for sharing the gospel with young and old, as well as equipping leaders to do the same. I am an extrovert. I love connecting with community and creating bridges for people to be linked into the church community. I enjoy reading God's word and praying. I believe my service for Jesus flows from His love. I hank God has brought Jeff and I to Tumut and Gundagai, we have been warmly welcomed by everyone. My prayer is that God brings many families to be part of the loving church community at Tumut. 'CREATING SAFE MINISTRIES' The Diocese will conduct a compulsory Training day in the Parish Hall on Saturday 27 August for all members of the Parish involved with ministry to children and youth, who visit the hospital, Bupa and Blakeney Lodge and/or work with vulnerable people, for all Wardens/Parish Councillors and Lay Ministers. Customers are just staying inside who can blame them!! We have a good supply of stock thanks to your support and Canberra. We were low a few weeks ago but things are fine again. We gave $ to Kidney Kar Rally and $ to 'Save our Little Heroes' recently. By giving funding locally we receive it back by support from the Community. I decided to close Saturday mornings for the months of July and August as we were not making enough to cover overheads. We will open on Saturday mornings again in September to see how it goes. Our opening hours are 10.00am to 4.00pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Welfare is no longer handled at 'New 2 U', again I and others think this is a better option. 5 SPIRITUAL SEMINAR A meaningful and successful Spiritual Seminar was held in All Saints' Parish Hall with a full day session on 7 April and a half day session on 9 April. 'The Search for Meaning in Later Life' was the theme for the Seminars which were presented by Rev'd Professor Elizabeth Mackinlay, a world recognised authority in aged care. It was directed at those in the Fourth State (after retirement) of life or those who care for the aged, staff at the aged care facilities, the hospitals and working in Community Care. Many from across the region took the opportunity to listen and learn from Rev'd Elizabeth whose passion is for connecting with meaning later in life a spiritual journey. As human beings we all have a spritiual component in our humanity. This equates for some in the realm of religious association, life centred in God. Many of our frail aged have experienced an affiliation with an established church in their lifetime. For others, the spiritual and ultimate and deeper meaning is experienced through creation, families and nature or perhaps the arts, music and the visual arts or a combination of these. Story telling and understanding our source of ultimate meaning is part of the process, which Rev'd Elizabeth names as Narrative Gerentology. We are story and that story is unique for each person. Telling our story helps others to see the connections between individuals and the community. It is a connection to the past and a bridge to the Rev d Liz & Rev d Elizabeth Mackinlay future, because the story is never finished. It is always being added to and refined. Those who took advantage of this amazing opportunity to listen to a gifted and wise teacher in the area for caring for, and developing a better understanding of the frail aged and the fourth stage of life, took away skills and learning to assist not only in caring for others, but also themselves on life's journey. At the conclusion of the Seminars Rev'd Liz Sloane sincerely thanked Rev'd Professor Elizabeth Mackinlay for her wonderful presentations and presented her with a Tumut broom. The Parish is grateful to Rev'd Liz Sloane for organising the Seminar and to Rev'ds Liz and Harvey Sloane for hosting Rev'd Elizabeth during her time in Tumut. She enjoyed her visit and loved meeting the people from Tumut and across the region. All Saints' Parishioners had the privilege of Rev'd Elizabeth celebrating and preaching at the Sunday Service on 10 April.. -5-

6 CENSUS 2016 is to be held on Tuesday 9 th August. Following the 2011 census there was a total of 915 submissions requesting either topics Recommended for Retention, Recommended for Review, Recommended for Exclusion or Potential New Topics. Of these 915, the topic with by far the largest number of submissions was Religious Affiliation, a total of 444 submissions. The next largest coming in at 29 submissions was Ancestry. Due to these submissions, in the 2016 census, the box for No Religion has been moved from last place following Other, please specify box to top of the list. There is a push for Australians to mark no religion in order to change the way Government policy is created and how projects are funded in Australia. Leon Della Bosca reports the push is being led by the Mark No Religion movement, which has received $12,000 in crowd- funding from around 140 backers who believe that if Christianity was no longer the most popular religion, there would be dramatic improvements in how the Government spends on welfare and education. Kylie Sturgess (president of the Atheist Foundation of Australia) states we are a secular country, and we would like to see whether or not people are actually reflecting upon what we think is a secular country and saying yes, it truly is, and demonstrating it in Census data. On investigating the reported statistical claims I found these to be incorrectly presented. They were giving the impression No Religion was only marginally less than Catholicism and greater than Anglican. According to the 2011 census statistics for Religion in Australia the major religions are represented as: Christian 68.0%, Buddhism 2.8%, Islam 2.4%, Hinduism 1.4%, Judaism 0.6%, with No Religion as 24.8%. Additionally, the Christian religion is broken down into denominational affiliation as: Catholic 41.4%, Anglican 28.0%, Uniting 8.1%, Presbyterian & Reformed 4.6%, Eastern Orthodox4.3%, Baptist 2.7%, Lutheran 1.9%, Pentecostal 1.8% with Other Christian 7.3%. Personally, I don t think the Mark No Religion campaign to dethrone Catholicism from the top statistic is due to regarding Government funding provisions but to try to insist we are no longer a Christian country and therefore have influence over our traditional Christian values, beliefs and customs. 7 AN AFTERNOON IN SCOTLAND On Saturday afternoon 18 th June approximately 100 people gathered in All Saints' Parish Hall to participate and enjoy Scottish music, singing and poetry. The hall had been beautifully decorated by Kaye Sturt and Barbara Manning with Scottish pictures (painted by them), Scottish attire and memorabilia on loan for the occasion. Ladies of the Parish supplied and served the delicious afternoon tea of Scottish food made to traditional Scottish recipes. George Manning was Master of Ceremonies with CDs of Scottish music and background piano music by Ruth Connolly setting the atmosphere for the gathering. Sue Measday and her group of male singers had everyone tapping their toes and singing along to old favourite Scottish tunes. Ken Acland recited poems by Robbie Burns and Ann Sandles recited poems by Pam Ayres. The Parish is thankful to all who attended and those who contributed in so many ways to make the afternoon so successful. PRESENTATION TO JOY JACOBS On Sunday 13 March the Rector, on behalf of All Saints' Parish, presented Joy Jacobs with a framed photograph and a Certificate of Appreciation in thanks and to acknowledge her lifetime of service to the ministry of the Tumut Parish. During her long life, Joy has capably and lovingly carried out many duties within the Parish. However, Joy is renowned for her organ playing and musical contribution having been the main organist for church services including weddings, funerals and special occasions for many years. Joy has been pianist for the Fun Nights, Music Halls, Discovery Weekends, Friendship lunches and many other functions held by the church where a pianist was needed. Joy has been a Warden, Parish Treasurer and member of Parish Council. Joy was Treasurer of the Restoration Appeal launched in the 1980's, holding that position until finalisation and payment of the work to restore All Saints' church building. Joy also worked with the catering group, made lamingtons and for fetes being an integral participant in the floral decorating of the church for the fetes. In fact, anywhere Joy was able to use her God given gifts and talents, she has been there and is still a regular member of the organ roster. THANK YOU JOY, we pray you will be able to continue in serving God and may He continue to bless you. The Sunday School students were learning about how God cares for us in times of trouble. The teacher asked the class to draw pictures of things that made them afraid. After they finished drawing, each child explained to the others what he or she had drawn. Five-year-old Scott had created in vivid crayon a looming cloud, a car and a man. He described how the man could not get his car started and a tornado was coming toward him. The man really needs to pray, doesn t he? said the teacher. No Scott disagreed. He needs to run!. We need balance in our lives. There is a time for prayer and a time for deeds. -7-

8 KIDDY LINK PLAY GROUP Kiddy Link Play Group has been delighted to welcome Rev. Yvonne Gunning to their meetings each Tuesday from 10am 12 noon. This free play group for children aged 0 5 years and their carer meets in the Sunday School building behind the Parish Hall during school terms. Under the capable leadership and co-ordination of Anna Dickinson a structured but informal programme is followed. Each day usually finishes with a time of music and singing. A group of volunteers from All Saints' congregation assist Anna in running the play group which is particularly helpful and supportive of young families who are new to the area and do not have any family support here. A special morning tea was held on Tuesday 3 May to welcome Yvonne to Play Music time at Kiddy Link Group and to meet the children, their carers and members of the congregation. The Play Group runs in close co-operation with the 'Birthing and Babies Group' (BaBs) who meet fortnightly on a Wednesday in the Parish Hall. This is a support group for pregnant women and young mums who can come together in an informal atmosphere to learn about issues of interest to them. The mechanic suggested, The battery is probably dead. No, the man replied, My horn still blows, it can t be the battery. The mechanic answered, It still might be the batter, because it takes more power to give light than it does to blow a horn. An interesting point, isn t it? It s easier to toot than to shine. 9 ANGLICAN WOMEN Since our annual meeting in March we are pleased to report that Leisha Wray has volunteered to accept the vacant position of funeral catering co-ordinator. We thank Leisha for agreeing to full fill this role which will allow us to continue this vital ministry to bereaved families. At our meeting in March we welcomed Ruth Connolly. Ruth, and her husband Kevin, moved to Tumut late last year and have been warmly received into the All Saints' family. Laine Burnett was our guest speaker in March. Laine spoke about the growth of 'New 2 U' which is a venture partnered between All Saints' Parish and Anglicare. 'New 2 U' has been well received in the community and has financially supported many worthwhile organisations and causes as well as the parish. 'New 2 U' is operated solely by volunteers and its success is attributed to each and everyone of them. In April and May Ruth Connolly and Ruth Blundell respectively, shared their stories of their early lives. At our June meeting Dianne Smith raised an important issue regarding how you answer the question on religion on the census paper in August. Please read all the information Dianne has provided in the article on page 6 of this Spire. Anglican Women were responsible for leading the church service on 3 rd April. We especially thank Rev'd Rae King for preparing the litugy for the service of morning prayer and for her thought provoking sermon. Our thanks also to Joy Jacobs who excelled at playing the well known hymns and to Ralda McAlister who capably led the service A very successful street stall was held on 28 th April. We thank those who worked on the stall, provided goods to sell and purchased from the stall. A reminder that all Anglican Women are welcome at our meetings which are held at 2.00pm on the third Thursday of each month. Gloria Davies, President. THANKS In his heyday, it was said that every word Rudyard Kipling wrote was worth twenty five shillings. Hearing this, a group of college students got together and wrote him a letter that said, We understand that every word you write is worth twenty five shillings. Enclosed is twenty five shillings, send us your best word. A couple of days later, the students received a telegram from Mr Kipling. The telegram consisted of one word. That one word, his best word, was THANKS. That may very well be the best word there is in English or any other language. Gratitude and thankfulness are the most precious gifts we have. A women was always able to find something to be thankful for. One morning there was a terrible snowstorm, but she still showed up for work, and she was thankful. Her supervisor was surprised to see her, and was even more surprised to hear that she was thankful to make it to work in such a storm. When asked why she was so thankful, she said that she was thankful that she lived so close to work. Her supervisor still did not understand how she could even walk on the footpath with the severe winds. She said that she was able to crawl to work on her hands and knees. Her supervisor was astounded, and asked what was so wonderful about crawling to work on her hands and knees. The woman smiled and said, During the blizzard in the early morning light no one was able to see me. It just goes to show that we can always find something to be thankful for. -9-

10 KEVIN CONNOLLY'S 90 th BIRTHDAY On Saturday 11 June friends gathered in All Saints' Parish Hall to celebrate with Kevin Connolly his 90 th birthday. Kevin, and his wife Ruth, have been visiting Tumut for holidays for several years and last year decided to become residents and moved to Tumut where they have become happily involved with All Saints' and the local community. Originally from Edinburgh, Scotland, Kevin is a talented Scottish dancer, having performed several times before Queen Elizabeth II at Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh. He has taught Scottish dancing and been a presented with a plaque acknowledging his contribution to Scottish dancing in Australia. During his retirement and before moving to Tumut, Kevin was involved with assisting with the reading programmes at Narooma and Moruya schools. Kevin cutting his birthday cake Kevin enjoyed the afternoon of fellowship, afternoon tea and the delicious chocolate birthday cake, made by Gloria Davies. FRIENDSHIP LUNCH The first Friendship Lunch for 2016 was held on Saturday 14 May with the large attendance enjoying good food and fellowship with friends and family. Community singing was led by Rev. Harvey Sloane and Jeannette Blundell. Guest Speaker, Rev. Peter Blundell, explained various aspects of his role as Regional SES Chaplain and gave those attending a brief taste of a new presentation in developing resilience being given in SES units across New South Wales. During coming months Peter will visit fifteen units around this region, as far west as Hay and Goolgowi, with the express purpose of helping SES volunteers increase their own resilience. The four main roles of the chaplaincy programme in NSW SES are ceremonial, pastoral care, leadership support and critical incident support. At the conclusion of Peter's presentation a number of questions were capably answered by him prior to Rev. Liz Sloane presenting him with a small token of appreciation. Strong opinions were expressed and sharp disagreements surfaced. The next day one of the Parish Council members felt bad about the whole meeting and asked the rector if he had slept well after the meeting had ended. He replied, I slept like a baby. Really? said the council member. Yes, I woke up every hour crying! said the rector -10-
