To the casual observer the Tumut river might look fairly much the same from day to day. Certainly they will notice the seasonal differences between high levels of irrigation release to the drier autumn months with much of the river-stone exposed when levels are lower. However, it is actually different almost every day. There are subtle differences which are important to both the canoeist and the angler. The canoeist needs to be aware of depth, currents and submerged obstacles. One could canoe 100 times from the junction to town and no two trips would be identical. Nature keeps changing. It is the same changes in nature that can both frustrate and delight those who fish the river. Anglers are even more sensitive to these changes than canoeists. Even a subtle change in the way the water moves round a back wash can influence the choices the angler makes about the set up of bait and tackle. The Tumut River in that sense is a parable of our community. To the casual observer Tumut doesn t change much. Of course the seasonal changes are celebrated (especially autumn) and over longer periods other kinds of seasons are observed, for example, Tumut s hardwood milling season is a thing of the past. Yet if we pause to observe more closely, every day brings subtle differences in the lives of those around us. Sometimes they are quite obvious, such as someone we know spending time in hospital. More often the differences are only noticed by close friends or family or by someone who spends a lot of time with them at work. Today one person may be a little more resilient than yesterday or a little more fragile. Today one person may be a little more withdrawn or a little more friendly than last time we saw them. Jesus described his disciples as fishers of men (of people). That is, we are to catch people for God s kingdom. We are to show His love to others a bit like bait or a lure. In this context then, awareness of others is important. Someone in our life might be more open to hearing and seeing God through you than they were last week or even yesterday. Do we notice those occasions? Do we say something at the time? Say what you might ask? You could say all sorts of things. It might be an invitation to church or a parish event. It might be an invitation to coffee and a time to just encourage or support when things are not so good. It might be an offer to pray for them or a situation of concern. It might be to offer them some practical help, or offer to give them a bible or an encouraging Christian book you have read. Tumut has quite a fishing culture when you add those who fish the river, the dams and the mountain streams and even those who head to the south coast. Do we at All Saints have a culture where we notice the subtle changes in our community and where we invite, encourage, and console others? Do we demonstrate love, and pray for and with others? Those opportunities are there very regularly (most days), if we observe more closely the river of people in our lives. Yours in Christ The glory of friendship is not the outstretched hand, not the kindly smile, or the joy of companionship. It is the spiritual inspiration that comes to one when he discovers that someone else believes in him and is willing to trust him. Peter -2-

Greetings to you all. It is an exciting time for me joining the parish to work with youth, children and families. I have grown up in the Anglican Church in the parish of Crookwell, a parish which four generations of my family have been active members of. During my time at Wollongong University, where I trained in primary teaching, I attended church at several Anglican parishes. In addition to regular services I have been involved with local youth and children s groups, school scripture (later as a scripture teacher) Camp Pelican, Convo, Youth Synod and various ecumenical youth activities including ISCF. All of this has given me a deeper understanding of the importance of these groups for children and young people to learn about, grow in and share faith in God. Part of my goal in working with the parish of Tumut is to provide opportunities for discovery, growth and sharing among children, young people and their families. A Brief History of Me Born in Crookwell the oldest of four children. My parents are Peter and Sylvia Cullen who have long been involved in both Parish and Diocesan activities including Cursillo and Kairos (Junee, Mannus, Goulburn). I grew up at Laggan Estate, Laggan a sheep farm as a 4 th generation farm family. My sister, brothers and I attended Laggan Public School and Crookwell High School. I then studied Primary Teaching at University of Wollongong before taking a different path to complete a Small Business Traineeship and manage Aunty Lou s with my mother. We sold dress and patchwork fabric, haberdashery, wool, women s clothes, gifts and home wares. We even had a coffee shop! In 2002 I had a phone call asking me to teach English in Daejeon, Korea at a language school. They wanted me to start the following week. My wonderful parents waved me off at the airport before heading home to pack up my house which was to be rented out a few weeks later. My time in Korea reminded me of why I loved working with children. It was also a time of growth for me within a small international congregation that was part of a larger Korean church with 8000 members and their own fleet of coaches for taking church members on excursions. On my return to Australia in 2004 I resumed work at the shop but began to work at Crookwell High School with a newly arrived Indonesian girl improving her English. This led to casual teaching both at the high school and at a variety of local primary schools. In my spare time I worked as a tutor for a Kip McGrath franchise in Goulburn until 2008 when the owners moved away. In response to parent requests I established my own tuition business in July 2008 which I still operate three days a week. In Korea and in Australia my work has always been with children K-12 with each group or stage having its own special charm. The past three years have been spent job sharing in English 7-12 at both Mulwaree High School in Goulburn and at Crookwell High School. In my spare time I sell clothes by party plan you may remember me from a fundraiser held at the rectory a couple of years ago and I design and sell greeting cards and stationery. I look forward to meeting the members of the parish and the wider community over the coming months. My days in Tumut will be Sunday, Monday and Tuesday morning. You can contact me at the 9.45 service, through the church office or via missskcullen@yahoo.com.au. For details of some of the exciting youth and children s activities see the article in this issue. Our problem is that we make the mistake of comparing ourselves with other people. You are not inferior or superior to any human being. You do not determine your success by comparing yourself to others, rather you determine your success by comparing your accomplishments to your capabilities. You are number one when you do the best you can with what you have, every day. -3-

Something a bit different is happening in the hall on the first Sunday of the month. You are invited to join us as we sing, pray, learn and share. The service will have specific sections for children , 11plus and adults with plenty of room for participation. The name is 90 - find the right angle. The time is 4pm first Sunday of each month. All are welcome especially children, young people and families. Also very welcome are those who would like to participate by leading a discussion group or working with one of the activities for younger children. For further details contact Sally or Peter The flower lady was smiling, her crinkled face alight with joy. On impulse I picked out a flower. You look happy this morning. I said. Why not? Everything is good she replied. She was so shabbily dressed, seemed so frail, her response startled me. You wear your troubles well. I remarked. She replied, When Jesus was crucified on Good Friday, that was the worst day for the whole world, then three days later Easter. So, when I get troubles I wait three days. Somehow everything gets right again. She smiled her goodbye. Whenever we think we have problems maybe we should; Wait Three Days. Your annual contribution for The Spire is now due and would be much appreciated to help defray the cost of producing the publication. Sunday 22 April will be Spire Sunday when we invite you to place your $4.00 in an envelope marked Spire and place it on the offertory plate. Alternatively it can be forwarded to the Parish office or handed to your Spire Deliverer Street Stall Dates 2012 May 4 and September 20 RECTOR: Rev d. 5 And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgement; (so) that you may approve things that are excellent; that you may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ. Phil 1:9-10 The word sincere comes from a Latin word meaning without wax. In the original Greek it means sun-tested. In Bible times, merchants sold fine porcelain that was greatly valued and therefore expensive. Sometimes when it was fired in the kiln, tiny cracks would appear. Dishonest merchants would smear pearly-white wax over these cracks, which would pass for unblemished porcelain unless it was held up to the light of the sun. Honest merchants marked their wares sine cera without wax That s a picture of genuine sincerity. No sham, no hypocrisy no hidden cracks to be covered over. You say, How can I live this way? By keeping your eyes on Christ not Christians! Paul writes, As a prisoner of the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Eph. 4:1 When Paul wrote this, he was under house arrest in Rome, yet he didn t regard himself as a prisoner of the Romans. No, he was a prisoner of Jesus, a voluntary slave, totally in subjection to the Lord. There s a metaphorical meaning to this word prisoner. It can mean binding with a spell. Paul was literally captivated by Jesus Christ! He thought and talked nothing else. He got up every morning determined to please Him. Some days he didn t do too well. We all have those days. But the next morning, he was up and at it again, more determined and committed than ever. Paul s sincerity wasn t based on keeping certain religious rules or trying to look good. It was based on a deep love relationship with Christ: For the love of Christ urges us on...so that those who live might live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died and who was raised for them. 2 Cor 5:14-15 My God, I pray that I may know you and love you, that I may rejoice in you. And if I may not do so fully in this life, let me go steadily on to the day when I come to that fullness. Let the knowledge of you increase in me here, and there let in come to its fullness. Let your love grow in me here, and there let it be fulfilled, so that here my joy may be in a great hope, and there in full reality. Anselm The Church Gossip and self-appointed arbiter of the church's morals, kept sticking her nose into other people s business. Several church members were unappreciative of her activities, but feared her enough to maintain their silence. She made a mistake, however, when she accused George, a new member, of being drunk after she saw his truck parked in front of the town s only pub one afternoon. She commented on George s behaviour on a Sunday morning in front of several members of the congregation, saying that anyone seeing the truck there would know what he was up to. George, a man of few words, stared at her for a moment and just walked away. He didn t explain, defend or deny, he said nothing. Later that evening, George quietly parked his truck in front of her house and left it there all night. 6 Recycled Clothing, Bric-a-Brac, Small Furniture Items & Other Surprises! You, man there, keep those women back, and God Almighty he laid down on the crossed timber, and old Silenus, my offsider, looked at me as if to say nice work for soldiers, your mind s not your own once you sign on that dotted line, Ave Caesar and all that malarkey Imperator Rex. Well this Nazarene didn t make it any easier really not like the ones who kick up a fuss so you can do your block and take it out on them. Silenus held the spike and I let fly with the sledge hammer, not looking on the downswing, trying hard not to hear over the women s wailing, the bones give way, the iron shocking the dumb wood. Orders is orders, I said after it was over, nothing personal you understand, we had a drill sergeant once who thought he was God, but he wasn t a patch on you. Then we hauled on the ropes and he rose in the hot air like a diver leaving the springboard, arms spread, so it seemed over the whole damned creation, over the big men who must have had it in for him, and the curious ones who ll watch anything if it s free, with only the usual women caring anyway and a blind man in tears. Bruce Dawe The shop is now open Tuesdays. Hours are Tuesday to Friday 10.00am 4.00pm and Saturday 10.00am 1.00pm. It is just amazing the volume of goods that we receive to replenish our stocks. We are most grateful to all those individuals from the parish and the wider community who bring things to us. Spread the word and keep our supplies up. We have also been given a considerable quantity of items suitable for the shop from several deceased estates. Have you looked in our shop window lately? The volunteer staff constantly rearrange and restock the display just because they like to but mostly because the turnover from the window display is so fast. The displays are eye catching and draw people in. The staff do a great job. We need more volunteers. What can you do? 4 hours here and there one day a week a particular day each fortnight? Contact Sylvia Halloran on and discuss your availability. We always have 2 or 3 people on duty one of whom is the Supervisor. Our Supervisors do a great job and we need to appoint a couple more. Interested? Most of our surplus is directed through Parish Council and includes our particular recommendations for disbursement. But NEW 2U directly supports other causes as well, such as $500 last December to Vinnie s Children s Toy Appeal, approximately $150 for Christmas hampers and recently $500 to Tumut High School Chaplaincy Committee. We are grateful to Sounds of the Mountains 96.3FM for promotion on the air waves listen after 8.30am on Tuesday from time to time when someone who need not be named wears a couple of hats promoting events with David Eisenhauer. Store your Bible in your heart, not on a shelf. The Bible is God s prescription for the health of your soul. You can trust the Bible. God always keeps His word

Our CONGRATULATIONS to the following members of our Parish who were honoured with Community Awards at the 2012 Australia Day celebrations. June Lucas with Trina Thompson after receiving her Achievement Award on Australia Day JUNE LUCAS was acknowledged as a quiet achiever involved in numerous community and fundraising initiaitives that benefit the local community. These include Meals on Wheels, Daffodil Day and Pink Ribbon Day street stalls and Brungle CWA with many years served as President. June is an active member of All Saints, always busy helping with catering with the Anglican Women and Catering Group as well as for the annual fete. June is a volunteer at New 2 U where she is able to assist with her many years of experience in retail. ROD BLUNDELL, although a relative newcomer to Tumut, was acknowledged for his ready involvement in several community organisations including Community Transport and his Lions Club activities. Rod plays the piano for services at Bupa, Blakeney Lodge, Murray Glen Village and also fills in as relief Organist at All Saints. Rod also assists with All Saints services as a server, sidesman, reader and chorister. He assists on the grounds roster, with funeral services, church functions and the annual fete. He is a Team Leader with the Tumut group of Anglican Community Emergency Response. Rod Blundell with wife Kerry and his Achievement Award on Australia Day. On 22 November 2011 All Saints Parish lost one of our devout parishioners when Ruve Carter passed away peacefully in her sleep aged 88 leaving behind many friends in her All Saints family. Ruve was one of the regular organists for Sunday services. She also played for services at the nursing home and Blakeney Lodge as well as for the Wednesday afternoon services at All Saints. Ruve s rich alto voice saw her join All Saints Choir and the Tumut Choral Society. She was involved with All Saints Music Halls as a loved member of the cast as an actress and chorus member. Ruve s other interests included Girl Guides (of which she was a leader), and many forms of art and craft such as pottery, copper enamelling, leatherwork, spinning and weaving. She excelled in knitting and crocheting and many people were recipients of her beautifully crafted articles. Ruve was treasurer of Tumut Art Society for many years including secretary/treasurer for the Annual Art Exhibitions. Following the tragic accident and passing of her beloved husband, Guy, in 2007, Ruve became a resident of Blakeney Lodge which she loved and where she was lovingly cared for. Ruve was farewelled at a beautiful service in All Saints and our sincere sympathy is extended to her sons Nick and Max and to her daughter Louise and their families by whom she is sadly missed. -7-

Under the active and versatile ministry of our Rector, Rev. Peter Blundell, 2011 has been another rewarding year for the All Saints Family. There are always challenges but, when we work together as we believe we have, united in God s love towards a common goal, then God s Will, will be done in His name. Highlights of 2011 were: The 25th Anniversary of the 1986 Rededication Service (following the Church Restoration), was held on All Saints Day in November when many former Parishioners and workers on the restoration returned to join in the celebrations. These included former Rector Archdeacon Emeritus Frank Woodwell, John Graham (Architect), Mark Woodwell (Engineer), Stephen Fowler (Organist) and several of the restoration committee. During the service Rev. Peter acknowledged through prayer and thanksgiving Archdeacon Frank s 60 years of faithful and fruitful ministry as a Priest. The service also acknowledged Rev. Peter s ministry as the 30th Rector of All Saints. The opening of the Tumut Parish/Anglicare Shop New 2 U in June. The shop has gone from strength to strength through the sale of good quality recycled clothing and bric-a-brac as well as providing a role for volunteers from All Saints who might not have found an outlet for their gifts and talents in other church activities. Profits from the shop have gone back into the Community through support of the Parish, Special Ministry, Tumut High School Chaplaincy, Kiddy Link Playgroup, Vinnies Toys for Children Christmas Appeal, Welfare and support of Tumut Regional Family Services and Christmas Welfare Hampers. The success of New 2 U rests solely on the shoulders of the daily supervisors and volunteers under the dedicated management committee. The purchase of the new Laptop and Data Projector has given more flexibility with choice of styles and music for our worship services. There has been a move to guitars, mandolin, violin and jambe drum at the 9.45am service with our several competent musicians on a roster system. The data projector is becoming an increasingly valuable asset for both worship and special services, particularly for funerals, educational programmes, studies and seminars. Other activities held during the year included: * An update of the Parish records * Spire Sunday in April, Back to Church Sunday in September and Grow One Sunday in October * Lenten Study Groups, Weekly Bible Study Group and Prayer Groups * Confirmation of eight young people by Bishop Stuart in June * Another successful Women s Conference in June * Involvement with Winter Camp Pelican at Rivercrest in July * Special ecumenical celebrations through World Day of Prayer, Songs of Praise and Advent Service * Police Remembrance Service in September and The Remembrance Service in December for those who had lost loved ones * Cursillo Ultreyas * Street Stalls, Friendship Lunches, Parish Dinner, annual Fete and Organ Recital * Bucket Appeals for disaster relief for the Queensland floods and East Africa Famine The continued involvement in ministry by Rev. Rae King to residents of Murray Glen Village, Bupa and Blakeney Lodge, to baptism families and the bereaved is greatly appreciated. Her willingness to step in whenever Rev. Peter is unavailable is a blessing as is her joint ministry with Rev. Peter at New 2 U morning teas held each Thursday. Kiddy Link Playgroup has grown under the capable leadership of Anna Dickinson. More than thirty families are now registered and this has stretched to capacity the resources of the Sunday School Hall. Enquiries are proceeding into replacing that building with a new multi purpose facility. -8-

A dedicated team continue to teach Religious Education at Tumut Primary and Franklin Schools sowing the seeds of God s love in many young hearts and minds. Teaching was again done in ecumenical class groups with only a few from each class not allowed to participate in RE. The Franklin children again attended All Saints for a Maundy Thursday Service and, for the first time, were able to hold their Christmas Service in their school hall. Anglican Women, through the generosity of the church community over several months, were able to fill thirty boxes for Operation Christmas Child. These boxes are forwarded to children in under privileged countries and for whom this is the only gift these children receive. Anglican Women meet at 2pm on the third Tuesday of each month (except December and January) and enjoy a short business meeting, interesting and varied guest speakers and a friendly chat over a cuppa. New members are always welcome at meetings and to join in the varied activities of this group. The Catering Group had another productive year providing meals for a variety of functions including a wedding, birthday parties, Car Club gathering, Tumut Shire Council and Seminar suppers, Christmas parties, morning teas and lunches. The fund raising committee formed during 2011 co-ordinated several events to raise funds for the Parish. These included a concert featuring the Wagga City Rugby Male Choir, the Organ Recital by David Johnson and the annual fete. Several functions are being planned for Maintenance of our buildings and grounds continues to be a major expense and we are grateful to all parishioners, trade and handy person workers who assist with their ever-ready skilful efforts. We thank God for Rev. Peter s ministry and leadership both within the Parish and in the wider community as SES Chaplain and Chairperson of the Tumut Family Support Services. A humble and gentle Shepherd to his flock, ably supported by Jeannette and Rev. Rae, we thank them for their love, commitment, hard work, support and friendship. Please continue to pray for all who work and support the Lord s work in this beautiful part of God s Kingdom. PASSING OF DAVID COMMINS The All Saints Community, together with the whole Tumut Community, was shocked and saddened by the sudden and unexpected death of David Commins on 12 December David was an energetic and tireless worker and, following his retirement as Corporate Planner with Tumut Shire Council in 1999, he became even more involved with a number of community activities including the Turf Club, Golf Club, Art Society, Community Transport, Meals on Wheels, Tumut Museum and the Woodworkers Club. David was a member of All Saints Church restoration committee, and for some years was Secretary to the Parish Council and a member of the finance committee. He assisted with maintenance of the church grounds and also with parish fund raising activities including the catering group and annual fete. David, along with other members of the Woodworkers Club, was instrumental in making the movable Altar and various wooden articles for use in All Saints. David is sadly missed and we extend our sincere condolences to Marcia, Fiona and Neil, Sarah and Adrian, and David and Jessica and his three beautiful granddaughters Amelia, Tasma and Addison. Also to sisters and brother-in-laws Barbara and Charles and Anthea and Bob and the many members of David s extended family. -9-

Thou shalt not worry; for worry is the most unproductive of all human activities. Thou shalt not be fearful; for most of the things we fear never come to pass. Thou shalt not cross bridges before you come to them; for no one yet has succeeded in accomplishing this. Thou shalt face each problem as it comes; you can only handle one at a time anyway. Thou shalt not take problems to bed with you; for they make very poor bedfellows. Thou shalt not borrow other people s problems; They can better care for them than you can. Thou shalt not try to relive yesterday for good or ill, it is for ever gone; concentrate on what is happening in your life and be happy now. Thou shalt be a good listener; for only when you listen do you hear different ideas from your own. (It s hard to learn something new when you re talking) Thou shalt not become bogged down by frustration; for 90% of it is rooted in selfpity and will only interfere with positive actions.
