2 It s inspiring to see such a good choice of modules to participate in during Lent. Whether you want to be quiet and reflective, learn a new skill, or be challenged in your thinking, there s something here for you. There are, in particular, many modules which will help you as we are challenged to evangelise effectively in the coming Year. These modules during Lent this year are part of the CCS programme, but also are open to everyone. The normal CCS programme will continue throughout the summer term so that the CCS members can consider, in their own groups, their part in God s mission and vocation. There s plenty here to choose from! CCS members are expected to choose at least one - but you can do more. And anyone else can join in as well. 3 Lent School Module Lent 1 I Believe in the Resurrection This module aims to put the physical resurrection of the dead back onto the Christian agenda, rather than the vague going to heaven in popular thought; to dispel some of the myths of an after life at the end of a tunnel or sitting on a park bench, which often surface during bereavement visiting and funeral preparation; and to see Jesus resurrection as the model for our resurrection. Course content includes: The biblical evidence for resurrection in both Old and New Testaments. The Resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead - the model for our resurrection? The importance of the body. Funeral liturgies and practice. Bringing Christian Hope to the bereaved. Aimed at anyone currently on the CCS (or having completed it previously) and any Christians interested in what happens after we die and those engaged in pastoral and bereavement visiting and Readers and Clergy who conduct funerals. Icons are religious paintings venerated in the Orthodox tradition. 4 Module Lent 3 W@W - Witnessing in the World of Work W@W aims to investigate the theory and practice of active Chrisitan witness in today s workplace. Its purpose is to better equip Christian witness in an agnostic and atheist atmosphere, and in one where witness involves interaction with other active faith systems. Course content includes: 1. Investigating being a Christian in the workplace - why witness in the workplace, what is witness, the barriers to witness, ethical challenges and witness without words. 2. Developing worldly-wise witnessing, investigating approaches to those of different beliefs and how those beliefs affect thinking and behaviour, examining differences and similarities between Christian belief and those of Agnostics and Atheists, Jews and Muslims and Sikhs and Hindus in order to facilitate greater understanding and more effective witness. W@W is ideal for any Christian, employed, seeking employment or volunteering, who is seeking to evangelise more effectively in the workplace. Tutor: Mac Leonard Saturdays 10.00am pm St Mary s Church March 7 & 21 South Wooodford Module Lent 4 Food Matters To explore Food Matters from a biblical and theological perspective, and in relation to spirituality, liturgy, community well-being and justice-making. Bread in the Bible and Bread in the church - biblical and theological reflections; includes hands-on bread making session. Fasting-spiritual resources and disciplines for Lent and throughout the year Feasting: becoming a celebration church; the place of hospitality in Christian life and faith. Food Justice: exploring ethical issues in relation to food, including Food Banks, Food Sovereignty and LOAF principles. We break this bread - exploring the meaning of the Eucharist through the medium of a Seder meal No previous experience necessary. 5 Module Lent 5 Exploring the ministry of the Evangelist and Enablers of Evangelism This course gives an introduction to Evangelism in theory and practice and is intended for anyone who wants to explore the ministry of Evangelist in its broadest sense. Course content includes; What is evangelism? How Jesus did it? Gospel & conversion. Reaching today s society. How to share our faith story. The ethics of evangelism Evangelism and prayer, Leading someone to Christ, Nurture and enquirers courses, Facilitating teamwork, How to train others, Organising evangelistic events. The course can be undertaken on its own or as part of the diocesan Evangelism Enabler training scheme for those considering applying to become Evangelism Enablers for their church. Listening means listening to others, to ourselves and to God. Learning to listen effectively helps us to improve relationships, grow as human beings and deepen our spirituality. Listening for Life provides core skills and attitudes in effective listening. Listening is at the heart of the church s ministry and can be life changing. 6 Module Lent 7 How does God s Church Grow? Is your church at a standstill? Are the congregation numbers dropping? Explore the reasons and challenge yourself to look at where your church is within the community it serves. The aim of this module is to think about where your church is now and where it will be in the future and will provide the foundations for developing confidence, vision and determination in order to think what your church can do to recognise God is at work. Tutor: Maureen McPherson Saturday 10.00am-4.00pm Diocesan Office March 7th Chelmsford Module Lent 8 Prayerful Evangelism The aim of this module is to deepen our relationship with God, by sharing in his work of evangelism, through reflection on bible passages and story telling. Taking Jesus as our model, we explore prayerful evangelism as being attentive, intentional, discerning, collaborative, provocative and inclusive. The module is for anyone who wants to go deeper with God and is passionate about His work of evangelism. Tutor: Revd Hugh Dibbens Friday mornings 10.00am noon Diocesan Office February 27 & March 6,13,20 & 27 Chelmsford Module Lent 9 Church History The aim of this module is to continue to explore Church History and what we can learn for our discipleship and our spiritual lives today. Sessions will centre around notable people and writings - looking for inspiration and wisdom from those who have gone before! While building on The story so far. (CCS Unit G). 7 Module Lent 10 The Wondrous Cross This module is a survey of the wondrous Cross and seeks to discover the meaning and significance of the death of Jesus exploring such questions as: is the Atonement a mystery that we shall never be able to plumb the depths of, or is it just a theory? If the Atonement is a theory, then is there one theory that is dominant, or is it multi-faceted? In exploring these questions, we shall examine the way in which Jesus viewed His death and why it was necessary; the Biblical images and metaphors relating to the Cross; the theories and models of the Atonement including the most recent Nonviolent theory; and the theories of some modern theologians. This module is open to all. Tutor: Revd Brian Kyriacou Wednesday evenings pm St Anne & St Lawrence Church February 25 & March 4,11,18,25 Elmstead Market Module Lent 11 Mapping your Community This is a basic course on exploring the theology and content of your local community prior to any pastoral or evangelistic mission. Can we think reflectively about our own parish area? Is there a theology of community that we can develop? Where are their points of power and failure, hope and despair, where can we find information to build a profile of your community essential for any out reach? 8 Module Lent 12 Pastoral Care & Hospital Visiting Christian Pastoral care is about promoting the well-being of individuals and of communities. It can include listening, encouraging, prayer and giving practical help to people in difficulty. It may involve supporting people as they seek healing and wholeness and promoting reconciliation with God, self and others. This module is for anyone who is interested in pastoral care and no experience is necessary, to consider theology of pastoral work and hospital chaplaincy; why visit? Should we visit? Who do we visit? What does it mean to be a pastoral visitor or work in the hospital chaplaincy setting. Tutor: Sharon Guest Saturdays 10.00am pm St Mary s February 21 & 28 Chigwell Module Lent 13 Your Shape for God s Service Do you wish you could discover your gifts? Do you wish you could live a more joyful and fruitful Christian life? Do you wish you could serve God more fully? Do you wish you could become the person God has designed you to be? This course will help you to explore your God-given SHAPE and how you can use it in his service, by looking at your talents, your knowledge and skills, your spiritual gifts, the things that excite you in life, your personal qualities, and your life experiences. Please note: It is a key postscript to the course that participants have a meeting with their minister or his/her representative to discuss what arises in terms of your ministry in the church or elsewhere. For this reason participants, who are not currently in the 2nd year of CCS, need the support of their minister to do this course and your booking should be accompanied by a written note or letter from your minister.
