If you or a loved one is ill or home after being hospitalized and would like prayers or a pastoral visit, please call Fr. Alan at ext. 116 or our Pastoral Associate Cindy Schillinger at cschillinger@dioceseofgreensburg.org or , ext.113. Volunteers Needed We are in need of Readers, Greeters, Altar Servers and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion for weekend Masses. We need 46 people for each weekend to serve at our three Masses. We have approximately 127 volunteers, many of which are volunteering for multiple ministries. We use a little over 1/3 of our volunteers per weekend. Some of our volunteers go south for the winter, some are students and are gone during various breaks and the summer. We are asking that you prayerfully consider helping us by volunteering to Greet, Usher, Read, Altar Serve, or be an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. The more people who volunteer the less a person needs to be scheduled. The above numbers do not include the music ministry which is a very visible part of liturgy. Per Mass we need one cantor and one accompanist, but we want many voices and instruments. We are fortunate to have many talented parishioners that volunteer to make our liturgies vibrant with their musical talents, but more are welcome. Please contact Cindy Schillinger with any questions concerning volunteering and clearances, either by calling the parish office or by ing cschillinger@dioceseofgreensburg.org. PRAYER CHAIN & PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRIES For those in need of prayer or a prayer shawl, please contact the Parish Office, extension 113. 4 FAITH FORMATION Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) The History of the Kingdom of God becomes the point of departure for this new way of reading the parables in the Level II atrium. The themes of time and value resonate with what they have experienced with the Ribbon Timeline or Fettuccia: the timeline of the history from Creation to Redemption to Parousia History of the Gifts: another type of timeline where the many gifts that God has given to us (stars, planets, minerals, sea, plants, animals, humans) culminate in the greatest gift of all Christ and his continuous presence with us in the Eucharist. We as human beings are being invited to collaborate with Jesus and one another to glorify God. Through the presentations given to children ages six through nine, the catechists begin to explore and synthesize some of the themes through the mystery of growth and transformation, that which makes something/someone precious and valuable beyond all else and that the Kingdom of God comes as a gift, but also requires a response. There is a role for the human hand to continue building and glorifying God. Youth Ministry Bowling Night Youth Ministry are going bowling on Sunday, January 27th from 5 to 6:30pm at Mohawk Lanes. The cost is $10.00, which covers shoes, one game, pizza and a drink. More information and permission slips are available on the parish website or YM bulletin board in the lounge. Please bring your signed permission slip and money to the meeting on January 20 or drop off at the parish office by Friday, January 25th. High School Winter Retreat The annual winter retreat, I Am Called, for diocesan high school students will be held March 1-3 at Laurelville Retreat Center in Mount Pleasant. Cost is $120. Register at your parish. Information is at National Catholic Youth Conference Registration The National Catholic Youth Conference, a biennial, three-day experience of prayer, community and empowerment for Catholic teenagers, will be held in Indianapolis Nov this year. Register for the diocesan trip at your parish by Jan. 30. Information is at The Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Gospel: ~John 2:1-11~ REFLECTION: In John s Gospel, the first miracle and Jesus public ministry begin at a wedding. At a certain point during the wedding feast at Cana, the wine runs out and Jesus mother, Mary, tells him of the need for more wine. It s striking that Mary acts as an intercessor, a role she s known for to this day. This story tells us a lot about Mary. She s a person who s deeply concerned about the welfare of others, and she takes those concerns to her divine Son. In reply to his mother, Jesus declares that his hour has not yet come. The hour is identified as his passion, his death on the cross. Some scholars have seen the hour as a symbol for the Mass, where we renew the sacrifice of Christ on Calvary in our hour. In the hour at Cana, Jesus changed the water into wine; at the hour of the Mass, Jesus changes wine into his Blood. We gather on the new Sabbath, on Sunday, for the Eucharist, the wedding feast of the Lamb (Revelation 19:7), the new Cana, where we drink the new wine, the Blood of Christ poured out for his bride, the Church.
