2 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Meek and Humble of Heart First Reading ~Amos 7:12 15~ T he Prophet Amos came from the land of Judah, in the Southern Kingdom. He prophesied in the Northern Kingdom, warning them of judgment for failures in jus ce while living in luxury. He was not well-received. In this reading we fi nd him being driven off from a main temple in the Northern Kingdom. His words are deemed an aff ront to the king s sanctuary. He is told to go and earn his bread by prophesying back in Judah, sugges ng that his gi of prophecy is not divine, but a way to make money. Amos replies that he is not a prophet by trade, but a shepherd and a dresser of sycamores, an agricultural job that helps the tree produce sweeter fruit. His voca on to prophesy is not his own idea; it comes directly from God. Amos foreshadows Christ, who surprised so many when he began his public ministry. Like Amos, Christ also meets rejec on and derision. Amos s agricultural profession likewise prefigures Christ s role as the Good Shepherd and the Vine whose branches are to bear fruit, albeit with pruning (see John 15:2). Amos also foreshadows the Chris an voca on. We are all in some way asked to leave our chosen pursuits in response to God s call. We may not see the fruits of our obedience immediately, but through faith in God, we will achieve great good Augus ne Ins tute. All rights reserved Second Reading ~Ephesians 1:3 14~ T he beau ful prayer of praise that opens Ephesians is a very rich text, and there are many ways to approach it in prayer. In keeping with this week s theme, we will look at the phrases that tell the purpose of God s loving elec on. First, we see that we were chosen to be holy and without blemish before him. This language is used for precious liturgical offerings. Thus, men are meant to be part of the sacrificial worship of God. Later, we fi nd repeated the idea that we exist for the praise of God s glory in Christ. What does it mean to exist for God s glory? We must fist look to Christ, who is the refulgence of God s glory. In him we fi nd obedience and trust. St. John s Gospel shows that the hour of glory for Jesus is his Passion the ul mate statement of love and trus ng obedience in union with the will of the Father. In our daily walk, our praise of God s glory should take the form of trust and gra tude in all circumstances. A heart at peace in the storm truly glorifies God. This a tude is a gi of the Holy Spirit, who is the first installment of our inheritance as sons of God. Even as we glorify God through our sufferings, our life of praise looks forward to the fullness of mes when everything will be recapitulated, or summed up, in Christ.2017 Augus ne Ins tute. All rights reserved Gospel ~Mark 6:7-13~ T he Twelve have seen Jesus calm the storm and cast out demons, and they have seen him be rejected by his long- me neighbors. Now he deems them ready to imitate their Master s work. He sends them two by two and also gives them authority over unclean spirits. The Twelve are not independent operators, but members of Christ s team. In this, we see that the life and strength of the Mys cal Body are essen al to the mission of the Gospel. In addi on, the Apostles are given only what they absolutely need they must rely on God for the rest. Christ tells the disciples, Whenever you enter a house, stay there un l you leave, and if they are not wellreceived, to leave there and shake the dust off your feet. Christ s direc ons reveal two aspects of preaching the Gospel: disciples of Christ must focus on the task in hand, and they must keep moving forward despite rejec- on. Following their Master s orders, the Twelve go and preach repentance, drive out demons, and heal the sick. By ac ng on Christ s call and relying on him, they are empowered to do mighty deeds. 3 Faith Formation Catechists & aides needed Preparations have begun for the Faith Formation Year and we are in need of Catechists weekly or as substitutes. If you are available or would like more information, please contact Michelle Dodge at , ext. 15 or A child must have attended two full years of instruction prior to receiving the Sacraments of Reconciliation, First Communion, and Confirmation. If all of the diocesan policies are not fulfilled, the Sacraments may be deferred. Diocesan policy mandates that children receive the Sacraments in the parish where the family is registered. Families may only be registered in one parish. Faith Formation Registration Registration forms for Faith Formation are now available at each worship site and in the parish office. If your child is in grade K-5 please fill out the GREEN form and if your child is in grade 6-8 please fill out the YELLOW form. Due to the change in the Mass schedule, the Faith Formation class time has changed but the location is still Podowski Hall in Lucernemines. Gaitley, MIC. Pamphlets were handed out last weekend and we began the prayers this past Friday. However, it is s ll not too late to join us. Pamphlets are s ll available this weekend and it is very easy to catch up with us in the prayer book and get into the daily rou ne. Also, on the Saturdays of July 21 & 28 and August 4 & 11 those who are interested will gather in Podowski Hall at 9am to hear a brief presenta on on the past week s Saint and then enter into a discussion about what was read during the past week. Then on Wednesday, August 15 th, The Solemnity of The Assump on of the Blessed Virgin Mary (a Holy Day of Obliga on and our parish Feast Day), there will be a Mass at the Lucernemines Worship Site at 8am and 5:30pm. At both Masses, the Prayer of Consecra on will be recited by those par cipa ng in the devo- on. In addi on, a er the 5:30pm Mass on August 15 th, we will gather in Podowski Hall for a Pot Luck Dinner. The parish will provide the chicken and beverages and we will ask that those who are a ending bring some sort of covered dish.
