Marriage preparation is required and couples are asked to speak to the priest first before setting a date. Couples, rather than parents, should contact the priest. If either party was previously married, an annulment must be granted prior to the selection of a future wedding date. 2 THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME WORKS OF POWER First Reading ~Wisdom 1:13 15; 2:23 24~ T his Sunday s Scriptures focus on the restora ve power of God. The First Reading from Wisdom establishes the original goodness of the world as God made it and the fact that sin and death are the result of our turning away from God. The reading is sandwiched by two statements about where death comes from. The first verse affirms that God did not make death. The final verse explains that by the envy of the devil, death entered the world. The central por on of the reading is composed from two sets of verses taken from the first two chapters of Wisdom, with the first set describing the goodness of the created world in general, the second focusing on the goodness of man in par cular. The pa ern of this reading mimics the opening chapters of Genesis, where we find the story of the seven days of crea on (Chapter 1) and then the story of the crea on of man (Chapter 2). Finally, we see an allusion to Chapter 3, where Adam and Eve fall. The structure helps to reaffirm the truth that from the beginning, God intends good for man. Wisdom literature aims to teach how to live our lives focused on eternity. As the next two readings illuminate the power of Christ, let s recall that his healing is part of an eternal plan of goodness and life Augus ne Ins tute. All rights reserved. Second Reading ~2 Corinthians 8:7, 9, 13 15~ A t this point in his le er to the Corinthians, Saint Paul makes a charitable appeal. But rather than focusing on the plight of those in need, he presents this as a golden opportunity. He sees this gracious act he asks the Corinthians to do as a natural companion to their other virtues. Prac cal care for their brothers in need (in this case the people in Jerusalem) goes along with the prac ce of faith, knowledge, and devo on. To further inspire them in sacrifi cial giving, Saint Paul points to Christ: For you know the gracious act of our Lord Jesus Christ. Thus, the term gracious act, expresses more than mere politeness. It is an act imbued with grace, that is, with God s life. As we refl ect on the power of Christ to heal, it is good to recall that we share in his power by grace. While we may not raise people from the dead or heal them with a touch, we do have the ability to bring restora on. Our works of charity, our words of encouragement, our prayers, and our forgiveness con nue to heal the wounds of the world. At the heart of all true deeds of mercy is the love of God, present in our souls by grace. Thus the most powerful work we can do is to surrender to that love completely. With Mary we say be it done to me according to your word Augus ne Ins tute. All rights reserved. Gospel ~Mark 5:21-43~ J airus s journey of faith reveals the process of surrender and trust in God. He begins with a plea to Jesus. At this point, everyone seems to be asking Jesus, and Jesus is hemmed in by a crowd of people at the water s edge. Jairus had to trust that Jesus would listen to him and would act on his words despite all the other people who demanded Jesus s me. As the crowd walks with Jairus and Jesus, Jairus is given an example of radical trust. The hemorrhaging woman has striven to be healed for years, to the point that she has spent all that she had. With such a condi on, she is unable to par cipate fully in the liturgical life of the community. All she has le is hope in Jesus. This woman doesn t even need to speak with Jesus she believes that even touching his cloak will bring her the healing she so desperately desires. Jesus grants her both spiritual and physical healing because of her faith in him. A er witnessing the healing of the woman, Jairus is given a test: news of his daughter s death. Though Jairus s friends advise giving up, Jesus asks for trust. As with the chaos on the Sea of Galilee, Jesus ignores the storm of despair and sorrow. And he asks Jairus to do the same. Leaving the crowd, Jairus follows Jesus into a quiet encounter, allows him to take control in the heart of his home, and it is there that the great gi of healing comes Augus ne Ins tute. All rights reserved. Fernando Cauad Gumangan As was men oned at last weekend s Masses, Fr. Andy s dad has died and Fr. Andy is now in the Philippines and might be there un l the end of July. Please con nue to pray for the repose of the soul of Fr. Andy s dad and the peace and consola on of Fr. Andy, his mother and his family. His dad s name was Fernando Cauad Gumangan and he was 80 years old. Fernando was from Enrile, Cagayan, Phillippines and he was the third child of the late Roque Gumangan and the late Rosenda Cauad. Fernando provided for his families daily needs by working as a carpenter, as mason, a farm helper and other odd jobs. He was a loving and understanding husband and a responsible father. A er finishing his work, he enjoyed conversing with his children and other people. He was very proud of all of his children and what they were able to a ain and accomplish. He is survived by his wife Cayetana Cammayo and his children, Marlon Gumangan (Maribel); Marivic Amor (Joel); Jesusa Gazzingan (George); Andres Gumangan; Gabriel Gumangan (Corazon); Jacinto Gumangan (Isay); Rosenda Coloso (Edward); Joseph Warren Gumangan and Fernando s siblings Dominga Maddatu and Alejandro Gumangan, in addi on to his 18 grandchildren. In addi on to his aforemen oned parents, Fernando was also preceded in death by three of his siblings and two of his children. Again, we offer our prayerful support to Fr. Andy and his family.

3 FAITH FORMATION NEWS Catechists & aides needed Preparations have begun for the Faith Formation Year and we are in need of Catechists weekly or as substitutes. If you are available or would like more information, please contact Michelle Dodge at , ext. 15 or A child must have attended two full years of instruction prior to receiving the Sacraments of Reconciliation, First Communion, and Confirmation. If all of the diocesan policies are not fulfilled, the Sacraments may be deferred. Diocesan policy mandates that children receive the Sacraments in the parish where the family is registered. Families may only be registered in one parish. Baptismal Preparation First Time expecting Parents Baptismal Preparation Sessions are offered at our parish quarterly. Quo Vadis Days vocations discernment camp July 8-11 All Catholic young men entering grades 9-12 are invited to the first Quo Vadis Days vocations camp, which will help them know Jesus more deeply and discern their vocation in life while having fun with others on the same discernment journey. The camp, which will be led by priests and seminarians from the Greensburg and Erie dioceses, is July 8-11 at St. Philip Catholic Church and Retreat Center, Linesville. Andy s absence and looking ahead a bit into the rest of the year, modifica ons will need to be made to the weekday Mass schedule as well. Next week (July 2-6), there will be a weekday Mass at both parishes on Monday and Tuesday. There will be no weekday Mass at either parish on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday of this coming week. Using the exis ng weekday schedule (M, T, W & 8am), during the weeks of July 9-13 and July and August there will be a weekday Mass only at Our Lady of the Assump on Parish (OLAP). Using the exis ng weekday schedule (M, T, W & 12:10pm), during the weeks of July and August and September there will be a weekday Mass only at Saint Thomas More University Parish (STMUP). I apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your understanding. I have sent an to all who have provided one asking that you submit your preferred Mass time to me as soon as possible. I hope to have a new schedule drawn up and done in a few weeks. There is a lot of preparation that needs done to the ministry scheduler program before I can run a new schedule. I have had a number of ministers call or me with time preferences, because of this I will be making a new schedule for July 7/8 to August 4/5. I will run another schedule upon my return from vacation. The new schedule will run from August 11/12 to December 29/30. Please let me know what dates you will not be available during this time period by Friday, July 20, No changes can be made after this date. Remember to find a substitute if you are not able to fulfill your schedule. Parish Secretary on vacation The parish secretary will be on vacation from July 2 up to and including July 10. There will be phone coverage from 9:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. You may leave messages with the person answering the phone. If you need a baptismal certificate or sponsor certificate, you may call in and request it but it will not be done until the secretary returns from vacation. Please allow at least a week for the certificate to be processed and mailed.
