3 AROUND THE PARISH A Message From The Pastor I am very pleased to announce that the search for a new Director of Liturgy & Music is now concluded. Ms. Alexandra Stossel has been hired to fill the position. Ms. Stossel is a 2016 graduate of IUP with a Bachelor of Arts in Music. She has been assisting in the music ministry at Saint Thomas More University Parish since 2014 and has been a Teaching Artist in the IUP Community School since 2017 while maintaining a private piano lesson studio. In addition to being an accomplished pianist, Ms. Stossel also plays the organ and the harp and has over ten years experience as a church musician. Starting Monday, September 10, 2018, Ms. Stossel will begin to oversee the music ministry at Our Lady of the Assumption Parish and then later in the year, will take up the baton at Saint Thomas More University Parish as well. If you see her, please welcome Alexandra into her new position. May her ministry among us indeed bear good fruit. The Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time Gospel: ~John 6:60-69~ REFLECTION At one point or another in life every one of us experiences failure. Failure is a time of crisis in which we can start to doubt ourselves, our purpose, and our plans. It is humbling to fail in relationships, career, or in any other area of our lives. It brings us face to face with our weaknesses and limitations. While Jesus, of course, is the ideal servant of God, the perfect evangelist, even he experienced failure. In this Gospel reading, which immediately follows the Bread of Life Discourse, Jesus followers abandon him. His teaching about eating his Flesh and drinking his Blood was too much for them to handle. After hearing it, many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him (John 6:66). This moment is a powerful lesson for us. Jesus did nothing wrong and yet his disciples departed. Sometimes when we fail, it is because we really dropped the ball and the negative consequences of our actions serve as a wake-up call to change. Yet, as Jesus example shows, it could be that our failure is not the result of mistakes, but the result of decisions and circumstances beyond our control. One thinks of the undeserved guilt that children of divorced parents often feel or the troubled conscience of the last person to speak with a suicide victim. If Jesus can fail, then sometimes we will too, even when the failure is not our fault. The important thing is to stay close to the Lord in the midst of our failures so that we can rebound from our mistakes with the help of his grace. 5 CAMPUS MINISTRY Welcome Back! Welcome to all new and returning Indiana University of Pennsylvania students. If you are new or returning please take the time to stop into the office and meet the campus ministry team and staff. We are here to help you continue your faith journey as you continue your academic journey. We have many volunteer opportunities, such as greeters, readers, altar servers, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and as assistants in our Catechesis of the Good Shepherd faith formation program. Alan, Fr. Andy and Cindy. We hope to see you there! International Friendship Program A new program is being developed at IUP by graduate student Mohammed Alarjani. In his role as graduate assistant for events and programs in the Office of International Education (OIE) he is hoping to match community members with two of more international students in an effort to promote goodwill, diversity in understanding, and create lifelong friendships. It will enable international students to meet people other than their classmates, while community members will be able to meet people from around the world. There is no financial obligation, students do not live with participants, and participants are free to make their own schedules. The Aiden Cup The annual fundraiser in memory of Aiden Strack will be held on Saturday, September 15th. Registration begins at 9:00am and the Golf Scramble begins at 10:00am. The Aiden J. Strack Golf Tournament is an annual event that helps to raise money to cover expenses of families to stay with their newborn infants in the NICU. Immediately following the golf tournament, the fundraiser continues with basket raffles, 50/50 tickets, T-shirts, and more to help to raise these funds. To date, the Strack Foundation has been fortunate to donate in excess of $15,000 to families in need, all because of your generosity! Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass Bishop Malesic invites all couples celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary during 2018 to participate in a Golden Jubilee Mass at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral Sept. 23 at 3pm. Jubilarians, their children, relatives and friends should contact their local parish office to register couples for the celebration. Even if they cannot attend the Mass, jubilarians will receive a scroll signed by Bishop Malesic commemorating their anniversary.
