3 AROUND THE PARISH Hand Blown Glass Nativity The name drawn for the October winner of the Hand Blown Glass Nativity from Uno Alla Volta is Jim and Marcie Martin. To take part in the monthly drawing use your envelope to donate to the anniversary fund or donate through WeShare. Second Collection The annual Diocesan Poverty Relief Fund and Catholic Relief Services (CRS) collection will be held Nov Seventy-five percent of the funds collected will stay in the diocese to support local needs, and 25 percent of the funds will go to Catholic Relief Services for overseas relief efforts. Book of Remembrance We annually remember all the faithful departed and support them with our prayers. During this month of November please feel free to enter the names of deceased loved ones into the Book of Remembrance located near the baptismal font. I have been overwhelmed by the prayers, the assistance, and the generosity of so many people during illness and my road to recovery. As a way to say thank you, I will be preforming a vocal concert on Sunday, November 18th at 2:00 PM in the church at STMUP. All are invited and I hope to see you there. Thank you. Halia Parks Thanksgiving Day The Mass of Thanksgiving Day will be celebrated Thursday, November 23rd at 9:30am throughout our nation, even in the face of hardships and struggles, this day calls for thanks to be offered to our Father in Heaven for His many blessings. As we gather this day, let us come to the altar of our Lord with a desire to share with others from what we ourselves have received. We ask that you bring a donation of nonperishable food to supplement our emergency food program. Also, the collection on Thanksgiving Day will be used to purchase food for that ministry that helps so many. 4 FAITH FORMATION Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) There is such beauty found within the History of the Kingdom of God as it unfolds in the Bible. The Holy Bible is one large book, made of many books, which tell one history from creation to the Parousia made by one God together with humankind. God slowly and carefully prepared the earth to receive and nurture humanity who is made in the image and likeness of God. He built into his great plan a unique role for the work of the human hand, guided by love. Since the arrival of Jesus the light and life of the Risen Christ has been spreading toward all the people of the earth, calling them into the fullness of life. We know that there will come a day when this light and life will reach all of the peoples of the earth...a day when God will be all in all. We know that we play a very important part in this plan. The Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Gospel: ~Mark 12:38-44~ REFLECTION: In the Gospel reading for this Sunday, Jesus uses the contrast between the behavior of the scribes and the action of a poor widow to teach us about the spiritual life. Even though our Christian life and worship is expressed outwardly, the life of the soul is inwardly nourished by our devotion to God. God sees our hearts; our spirits please or sadden God, because sometimes our external actions can contradict what is truly in our hearts. Some scribes exhibited their wealth and status by parading in public, not only in front of their peers, but also in the presence of those who were poor and lacking the basic needs of life. They did not simply flaunt their wealth, but they did so at the expense of the poor and helpless. Scribes made a living by interpreting the Mosaic Law. Also, some acted as executers or managers of the estates of widows, and they would take part of that estate as payment. As such, Jesus says that they devour the savings of widows. The widow is meant to teach us about humility and trust in the Lord. Jesus extols these virtues. The widow teaches us to sacrifice like Christ, who offered his life for the salvation of sinners. As the Psalmist proclaims, My sacrifice, O God, is a contrite spirit; a heart contrite and humbled, O God, you will not spurn (Ps 51:19). Our most pleasing sacrifice to God is a humble heart that trusts God enough to give him everything. The simplicity and humility of the widow provides us substantial material for spiritual reflection. Let us approach this reading prayerfully and humbly, allowing it to instruct us in the way of humility. The scribes and the poor widow respectively give us models to avoid and to emulate. Our lives may be different in detail but the principles remain the same. 5 CAMPUS MINISTRY Pope Francis Speaks to Young People (excerpts taken from Don t Be Afraid to Say Yes to God ) The Courage to Reach Out When a religion becomes a little world, it loses the best that it has, it stops worshiping god, believing in god. It becomes a little world of words, of prayers, of I am good and you are bad, of moral rules and regulations. If I have my ideology, my way of thinking, and you have yours, I lock myself up in this little world of ideology. Open hearts and open minds. If you are different than I am, then why don t we talk? Why do we always throw stones at one another over what separates us, what makes us different? Why don t we extend a hand where we have common ground? Why not try to speak about what we have in common, and then we can talk about where we differ.... In Buenos Aires, in a new parish in an extremely poor area, a group of university students were building some rooms for the parish. So the Parish priest said to me: Why don t you com one Saturday and I ll introduce them to you? They were building on Saturdays and Sundays. They were young men and women from the university. So I arrived, I saw them, and they were introduced to me: This is the architect. He s Jewish. This one is Communist. This one is a practicing Catholic. They were all different, yet they were all working for the common good. This is called social friendship, where everyone works for the common good.... And this is what I m asking you today: to find ways of building social friendship. Do you feel the Lord is inviting you to grow in friendship with them? What are some good ways to find common ground in those relationships? Eucharistic Adoration Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will take place on Thursday, December 6th at 8pm in the church. There is no Adoration in November due the Holy Day on Thursday, November 1st. This is a monthly devotion of the CSA, but all students and parishioners are welcome to participate. Catholic Student Association (CSA) Join CSA for their weekly session on Tuesday, November 13th from 8:15-9:15pm in the Allegheny Room of the Hadley Student Union Building. Malesic invites every member of the Diocese of Greensburg to join him for the final listening session where he will be present. Bishop Malesic knows that the Pennsylvania Grand Jury Report and the events of the past few months have evoked a great deal of pain, sadness, confusion and uncertainty for the faithful of the Diocese of Greensburg. The upcoming gathering is extremely important, enabling Bishop Malesic to listen to your concerns, and to respond to your questions. This session will give you the opportunity to express your feelings, observations and suggestions. Please attend and allow your input to help him guide our Church as we go forward from this moment in our history as the People of God. Evening Session: 6:30-8:30pm - Thursday, November 29 - St. Bernard of Clairvaux, Indiana Workshop The diocese s Office of Faith, Family and Discipleship and the Center for Ministry Development will present a workshop with Tom East, Accompanying Youth and Young People on their Journey of Faith and Discernment. The workshop is for leaders in faith formation and youth ministry, including catechists, volunteers and Catholic school principals and teachers. It will be held Nov. 16 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Christ Our Shepherd Center on Route 30 east of Greensburg. The workshop will be guided by the Synod on Young People, the Faith and Vocational Discernment. The cost is $10 and includes resources and lunch. 7 STEWARDSHIP Almighty and ever-faithful Lord, gratefully acknowledging Your mercy and humbly admitting our need, we pledge our trust in You and each other.
