1 APRIL 2018 CALLED TO LOVE, FOLLOW, LEARN, SHARE, AND SERVE The angel said to the women, Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Rosie As I settle into this role as your guide on the spiritual journey, I find that I m learning a lot about the messages and systems that are happening in the background of our church. Over and over again when someone steps into my office they say I know you don t have much time or I don t want to waste your time, but can we talk? Let me be as clear as I can I HAVE TIME FOR YOU. Yes, you the one reading this right now. The things of the church will always be here, asking for my time. but YOU are the church, without you we are just a building. I know that one of the struggles this church has had is that your pastoral leadership was absent, or distant. If you haven t learned yet, that s not how I roll. My top priority is YOU, and being your support and guide. I want this church to be a safe place, and an honest place where we share our real selves and are loved. Continued on page 2
2 Thoughts from Rev. Rosie continued: If you have a faith question, let s talk. If your heart is aching, let s talk If you hated my sermon, let s talk. If your joy is bursting at the seems and you need to shout from the mountaintop, let s talk! The better I know you all, the more support I can provide. Support from my teaching on Sundays, to the ways I can pray for you, or how to make choices for mission and service that are important to you. The Session added 10 ours to my week! That is time spent for visions of the future of our church. And you are a part of that story! Sure, if you know you are coming or want to talk, letting me know so I can set aside time is helpful. And I promise I will tell you if I cant talk right then. But what matters to me is that you understand that my door is open to you. My heart desires to know you better and foster deep, real connections with you. I love you, and I m grateful to be here to walk beside you. 4 MARCH SESSION HIGHLIGHTS Celebrations since the February meeting: The great start to the One Great Hour of Sharing Offering. Positive feedback in response to increasing Pastor Rose s contract to ¾ time. Deborah Bartelt has been re-stored to active membership. Welcome back, Deb. The role of the Board of Deacons was reviewed. As defined in the Book of Order, the Board of Deacons is under the supervision and authority of the session. Communion to home-bound members will be provided on either the first or third Sunday of a month, so as to make it an extension of the Sunday worship service where the congregation celebrated Holy Communion. Session liaisons to the deacon meetings for the second quarter are: April- Jack Wirch, May-Kristina Mosley, June-Bob Dinse. Job descriptions for all church employees are being revised. Jack Wirch has volunteered to lead this effort on behalf of the session, which is acting as the personnel committee for the church. Annual performance reviews will be aligned with the employment anniversary date of the employee. The current Manual of Operations, published in January 2013, is being reviewed. Most of the policies require some updating. Based upon information provided by Winnebago Presbytery, several new policies need to be added. The work is being shared by all session members who plan to have this project completed by the end of Pastor Rose will not be preaching the Sunday after Easter as a provision of her part-time pastoral status. This will not count as a vacation Sunday. 4
5 LAMPLIGHT LIBRARY Book of the month: The Comfort Bird Author: Hylke Speerstra A journalist traveled to America from Holland to interview Nanno Hiemstra, Lorraine Papke s father. The book was written in the Frisian language and later translated into English before being published. Without the cooperation and openness of the American farmer and WWII war veteran of the 90th division Nanno Hiemstra journalist Hylke Speerstra would not have been able to write this story. The Comfort Bird follows the experiences of three generations of two families of farm laborers from a small town in the Northern Netherlands. One family moves across the ocean to seek their fortune on the American Prairies. The second family is too much rooted in the heavy soil of the old country to emigrate. In a strange twist of fate WWII brings the families together again, on opposing sides of the conflict. DEACON NEWS The First Presbyterian Church 2018 narrative budget states that the Board of Deacons offers a ministry of compassion to those who are poor, sick, homebound, or in need of prayer. According to Young s Analytical Concordance, compassion is used in the Bible 42 times. In Lamentations 3:21-23 compassion means tender mercies. This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. It is of the Lord s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. The Deacons meet monthly and work to love, learn, follow, share and serve. At their March meeting they learned that God s compassions are new every morning. It is our prayer that we are one family living in partnership with Christ, celebrating and sharing our faith as we seek to continue the ministry of Christ with a compassionate awareness of the needs of others. So please join us on Wednesday, February 7th and February 21st at 6:00 pm! It will be a lot of fun spending time together, and sharing our thoughts in an open-minded atmosphere. 8 Across the world, it s estimated that around 27 million people are being trafficked for sex. Most of them are women. The numbers here are hard to pin down. The Crimes are happening in all of Wisconsin s 72 counties, but some experts say Milwaukee is a hotbed for the activity. Many believe this is an inner city problem for black girls who are without a father and living in poverty. In reality, sex trafficking victims are often boys who are younger than 13 and girls of any age. It also includes men and women of varying ages and ethnic backgrounds. This is everybody s problem and all are at risk. Join us on Wednesday, May 2nd as we educate our congregation and community about this growing problem. First Presbyterian Church will be showing a video series and having discussion on how real the problem is, especially in our area, and the signs to look for. We are opening up this educational evening to the community so please share with your friends. More information will be coming as we get closer to the event. Please contact Annie Leonard or Rev. Rosie if you have any questions. 8
9 Have you had a chance to check us out on Facebook? After you log on to Facebook, you can do a search for us by typing in First Presbyterian Church of Winneconne. You can see what is happening in the life of our church. Please like our page and share our events with people you know. This helps to get the word out of who we are. When disasters strike, people give, volunteer and pray so that those impacted receive help and hope; this is church. When poverty and violence cause hunger and people join together to respond to the need and address its root causes; this is church. When injustice impacts those who are vulnerable and people join hands with one another and lift their voices against the interests of power; this is church. One Great Hour of Sharing is the single, largest way that Presbyterians come together every year to work for a better world. We join with several other Christian denominations in this effort. The church is happening right now, all around us---because we share Christ s love. So far we have raised $ for this great cause. Thank you for all of your support. 9
