1 May-June 2017 A Monthly Publication of Foster-Tukwila Presbyterian Volume XVII, Number III FOSTER-TUKWILA FOCUS PASTOR: Nick Krantz MINISTER OF COMMUNITY RELATIONS: Chaplain Al Patterson OFFICE MANAGER & NEWSLETTER EDITOR: Jenny McCoy CUSTODIAN: Adriana Cribb There is an interesting phrase in Acts 10:38 as Peter is explaining to Cornelius, a God-seeking Gentile, about the gospel of Jesus Christ. Peter says of Jesus that He.went about doing good. This good that Jesus did is fleshed out in the gospels where we see Jesus ministering to people s needs physical and spiritual - culminating in the ultimate good of offering Himself as an atoning sacrifice for our sins and rising from the dead as Lord of all. Throughout the centuries wherever people have put faith in Christ the Holy Spirit births a Christ-like spirit where, in the steps of our Master, we desire to do good and help others. Pastor s Pen FTPC Financials FTPC May Missions May Calendar June Calendar FTPC Bulletin Board Pastor Nick s Retirement Global Day of Prayer As I near the end of my ministry at and through FTPC, there are numerous favorite aspects of pastoring (e.g. discipling those eager to grow in the Lord; preaching; hearing testimonies that reveal lives transformed by Christ; corporate worship where we palpably sense and respond to the Lord s presence.and the list goes on.) Then reality check there are a few, thankfully few, least favorite parts of the ministry. And one of those least favorite parts is responding to people who drop by the church needing help in some form. Their requests generally bring turmoil in my heart. Why? After all, we are to be doing good in Jesus name like He did. The problem comes from two colliding principles. I love people, including the down and out, and compassion leads me to want to help. On the other hand, what is it that they really need? Balancing the principle of compassion is the principle of stewardship and discernment. Since I don t know the people I have no idea how much, if any, of their story is true. Is my help (or the church s help) simply enabling them to continue in unhealthy habits or decision making? Are they taking advantage of our goodness to exploit others? There are no easy answers. Phone calls to the church are a little easier. We have a process that Jenny walks people through. It is the sudden drop-ins that are difficult. After a recent Sunday service Jeanette, myself, and another FTPC er spent time with a drop-in who had two others in their car. We ultimately helped them out and I found out subsequently that they took advantage of our help in an unauthorized way. No doubt they had deep needs. They need Jesus. But did we help them? I don t know. There is a very fine line here. Some of my favorite times of ministry have been praying with and helping people come out of severe bondage and wounding to a vibrant life and hope in Christ. Relationships were formed and nurtured. But just the other side of that line are the cold call drop-ins where no relationship is formed. Discerning how to respond to them is not easy. Thankfully, we can pray and leave the results to God. And - thankfully! these dropin challenges are just a very small aspect of an overall very enjoyable call as pastor. So let s keep on doing good as the Lord leads. In Christ s service,

6 Join the Foster Pres Tukkies to Fight Human Trafficking! The 9th Annual S.O.S. 5k to Seek Out and Stop Trafficking (formerly Free Them 5K) is on May 13th, 2017! Last year's event drew 1,600 participants. Together, they helped protect 4,375 children from becoming victims of human trafficking. Visit give.worldconcern.org/ and select Foster Pres Tukkies from the scroll-down menu to register for this event. The early bird price is $25 for adults and $10 for youth, so register as soon as possible. You will receive a personal web page to help raise support. Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. Exodus 20:12 Whether you are young or old, you can honor your parents. How? By showing respect. Leviticus 19:3 says, Ye shall fear every man his mother, and his father, and keep my Sabbaths: I am the LORD your God. Now that word fear doesn t mean to quake in the presence of your parents. That is, you are to have a holy respect for your father and your mother. You may say, But my parents are not worthy of respect. With all due respect, you aren t either. None of us are worthy. Only perfect children can demand perfect parents, and no children are perfect. Our parents are imperfect. We are imperfect. But God is holy, and He says that we are to respect our parents. What s your relationship like with your parents? If you ve been showing less than the type of biblical respect God requires, then begin today to turn that around for His glory! 7 ANNUAL MEETING OF ECO S NORTHWEST PRESBYTERY Now that FTPC is part of the ECO denomination, we have become part of ECO s Northwest Presbytery, which consists of ECO congregations in Washington and Oregon. Because of the large geographic area this covers, the NW Presbytery meets only once a year, and then for a couple of days. In between those annual meetings smaller groups of ECO congregations will meet in Mission Affinity Groups [MAG s], where they encourage each other and hold each other accountable. This year s NW Presbytery meeting was held May 4-6 at Tacoma Central Presbyterian Church, a largely Korean based congregation. They did a great job of hosting the presbytery. Representing FTPC were Bea Eaton, Alex Myrick, and Pastor Nick and Jeanette. It was a wonderful time of encouraging and equipping for mission and ministry. It looks like FTPC will be matched with Rose Hill Presbyterian Church (Kirkland) and Mukilteo PC in a regional MAG. Like the PCUSA, ECO holds its national General Assembly every two years, only they refer to that gathering as the Synod, the highest ECO level. The next Synod is scheduled for January 23-25, 2018 and hopefully FTPC can send a representative or two to that gathering. May-June 2017 Page 7
