Cathy Cannon STAFF CHANGES Last month our church went through two staff changes. Steven Powless and Kim Marley have resigned as our Youth and Children s Pastors effective October 29 th. The youth ministry position has been changed to Youth & Young Adult Pastor and the Board has called Greg Boyland to fill that position. Greg has a Master of Divinity degree from Indiana Wesleyan University and has previously served as the pastor of the Zion Chapel Church here in Elwood. He is married to Caitlin and has a four year old daughter, Isabelle. The Children s Pastor position is being replaced by the CMT (Children s Ministry Team). A dedicated group of volunteers from the church will be planning and leading the Children s Ministry. Our children s ministry is being expanded to include more family oriented activities and a broader range of Sunday School classes and opportunities for children to grow in their faith. They are currently in need of donations of construction paper, crayons and markers. For more information contact Sue Gardner, VETERAN S SUNDAY On Sunday, November 12 th we will be recognizing and honoring our veterans in all three services. The Mission Ministry is also participating in a project to provide Military Bible Sticks (the Bible in audio form) to thousands of troops who are serving our country. ADVENTure The ADVENTure is a new holiday program of the church that will take place from 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 2 nd. Families will have the opportunity to work together on two special projects that they can take home and use as part of their holiday decoration. We will close the program by coming together for dinner and then decorate both the sanctuary and big room for Christmas. 3 NOVEMBER 2017 NEWSLETTER PAGE 3 NEWS & VIEWS TRUSTEE NOTES The Trustees would like to share a few of the things that we have been addressing over the past year. Last fall, we discovered roof leaks at the southwest corner of the old part of the church that were causing ceilings to fall in over a storage room, old office area, and the chapel. Thanks to Claudia Seward and the Bible study ladies who spearheaded a soup fundraiser in December, over $2,000 in seed money was provided to get a roof repair project started. In the early spring, an anonymous donor offered $15,000 if the congregation would match funds. Everyone stepped up and that roof repair was completed in mid-may. Then, early this summer, we sustained hail damage to the sanctuary roof. In the past two weeks, replacement of that part of the roof has been going on. The Trustees call this Phase 2. In addition, many of you have noticed and pointed out the water-damaged ceiling tiles over the new part of the building. We were well aware of this problem and after consulting with contractors, discovered that the roof/ceiling area in the new part is lacking a vapor barrier. Dealing with this issue is Phase 3 and we hope to be able to address this problem in the coming year. There are other major items that also require the Trustees attention. First is an electrical issue. A few weeks ago, the chandelier lights in the sanctuary went out. We discovered that the dimmer which controls those lights is from the 1950 s. It was rebuilt about 30 years ago but replacement parts are no longer available. So the wiring and lighting in the old part of the building needs to be updated. We are currently exploring options to that issue. Another problem that the trustees hope to be able to address is the need for a commercial dishwasher in the kitchen. HOW CAN YOU HELP? Right now..prayers! But in the near future, perhaps you could help with some fundraising efforts. Another way we all can help is with some maintenance of our church. Art Hensley, our custodian, works 15 hours per week which does not allow for much more than basic cleaning. There are many other maintenance jobs such as clearing the gutters and cleaning the sanctuary pews that need to be done as well as just a general sprucing up of many areas in the church. We d love for a group of men and women to volunteer, perhaps on a Saturday morning, to take care of some of these tasks. Contact the church office ( ) to let us know when and we will provide needed supplies. We hope to hear from you soon. The Trustees would also like to thank the ladies who recently spent two different mornings doing a deep cleaning of the kitchen and pantry area. We would also like to thank Marcy and Mel Fry for cleaning the carpets in the big room over the Labor Day holiday and Gary and Sharon Crandall for the upkeep on the landscaping.

Mark your calendars for the SECOND ANNUAL ALL-YOU-CAN- EAT SOUP DINNER Saturday, December 16 MINISTRY UPDATE In the month of November we recognize and honor those who have given military service to our country. Faith Comes By Hearing is a mission organization whose focus is helping people to connect with the word of God. This month they are partnering with local churches like ours to provide hope for our heroes. The goal is for every one of our troops to have access to the Bible through the Military Bible Stick. It is an MP3 player that has the Scriptures pre-loaded on it. Our Mission Ministry is donating $ to this mission. COMMUNITY MEAL SCHEDULE 1st United Methodist Church : 2nd Sat., 5pm East Main St. Christian Ch : 3rd Thurs., 6pm St. Joseph s Catholic Ch: 4th Wed., 5pm St. John s Lutheran Ch 4th Sat., noon. Success seems to be largely a matter of hanging on after others have let go.
