1 June 2018 St. Newsletter Paul Lutheran Church 602 Morgan Blvd. Harlingen, TX St. Paul Youth and MYR Over the past year, our St. Paul youth program has been actively meeting with youth from grades Their leaders have poured into them, taught them about Jesus, and walked life with them. Every year, high school youth are given the opportunity to continue to grow in their faith and learn valuable leadership skills though hands-on serving though a program called Missional Youth Retreat (MYR) hosted by Concordia University Texas in Austin. This summer we have eight youth who are being sent to participate in this program. We are very excited about this opportunity for them and all that God will do in and through them. Last year we sent nine youth to participate in MYR and all of them came back with a deeper understanding that their calling in life is to be a person who shares Jesus. They had the opportunity to serve across Austin and interact with people from all walks of life. They met youth from all across Texas who shared a similar passion for sharing Jesus. It is an incredible opportunity to be able to send our high school youth to events such as MYR and watch them grow. Please keep keep the following youth in your prayers as they travel, serve, and learn during MYR from June in Austin. YOUTH ATTENDING MYR: Kayla Atkinson, Luke Bresson, Exley Carrillo, Frankie Flores, Cassy Leftwich, Lauren Powell, Jose Sanchez, and Justice Tighe

2 Crossroads RGV joins Love Los Fresnos Movement of Crossroads. We want to be loving, serving, building relationships, and sharing Jesus on a regular basis with our new friends in Los Fresnos. If you d like to be part of the movement June 17-22, we invite you to participate! Bring your work shoes and a service spirit and serve alongside us each day. If you d like to be kept up to date on all that is happening with Crossroads and the Love Los Fresnos Movement, contact Kayla Brock at kb@splch.com and she will keep you informed. Above all, please pray for Crossroads and all Our Second Annual Statewide Middle School Mission trip to the RGV, called Crossroads, is June and we are so incredibly excited! Plans are being finalized, speakers are boo ked, service projects are in the works, and youth are getting so pumped! Our service project coordinator, Chad Bresson, has been working endlessly to find the best service projects that connect our people to other people and then to Jesus! He is working with Los Fresnos Community Development Corporation (CDC), the Boys and Girls Club of Los Fresnos, and other church leaders to identify people in the community who need help. So far, their efforts have led to a possible 65 different service projects in the Los Fresnos community with more possibilities on the way. God is moving in big ways, yall! We are expecting approximately 75 middle school, high school, and adult volunteers participating in Crossroads That is an approximate 75 people launched into Los Fresnos to serve, lead, and share Jesus. What an incredible initiative! Because of the amazing connections Chad has made and the growing list of service projects, we are exited to begin the Love Los Fresnos movement. Our hope is to extend a partnership with the community of Los Fresnos beyond the week those participating in our event. We are excited about what God is doing and we can t wait to join Him in His Mission! 2

3 R C I O C S A T A Mission Trip 2018 individuals with different background and of different ages and makes them one big family. They will learn each other quirks, likes, and dislikes. They will learn who snores at night and who likes longer showers. They will learn how to cry together, how to be patient, and how to celebrate wins together. But most importantly, they will see and experience Jesus working in each others lives. Here are ways YOU can be part of our family even when you re 2,000 miles away: PRAY: Below you will see the names of all of our family members. Please keep them in your prayers as they travel and share Jesus with the Costa Ricans. Also, please pray for our friends at Hogar de Vida. Pray for the Tia s who constantly give and love the children. Pray for the children who have been told they are worthless for them to see the deep love they have not only from the Tia s, but also from Jesus. And pray for the leadership team there as they This summer, a group of 21 people will head to serve and love at Hogar de Vida in Atenas, Costa Rica. They are counting down the days, packing bags, gathering supplies, and getting so excited to join Jesus on His mission in Costa Rica. Our team is comprised of people from 4 different churches and locations. 5 are joining us from Bastrop, 5 from St. Paul McAllen, and 11 from here St. Paul Harlingen! What makes these trips outstanding is knowing that God brought this team together. He wanted everyone who is going to go and He is going to use each and every one of them to make an impact on the people they serve. God takes 21 Costa Rica Mission Team Pamela Bohnsack Tracy Campbell Caroline Grannum William Horn Collin Porter Truman Porter Sandra Saenz Kayla Brock Linda Cordes Katie Havranek Chris Martinez Ethan Porter Korynne Reininger Jeanette Schaefer continually work to make Hogar de Vida the best it can be! GO: While we can t take any more registrations for our Costa Rica trip, we do want you to start praying about joining us for different trips this summer, fall, and spring. Our fall trip will be announced soon. But, RioMAC Summer Intern Summertime and the living is easy Something I wish were true for this busy summer BUT God has bigger and better plans for us and it s hard not to be excited! One of the things I am most excited about is that RioMAC, the Rio Grande Mission Action Council, has a new DCE Intern! Our Summer Intern is Krista Peña, a Concordia University Texas student. Krista will work alongside myself and Kayla as we jump into some fantastic summer activities and retreats for our RGV youth! Krista was born and raised in Brownsville and grew up attending El Calvario Lutheran Church and Trinity Lutheran Church there. Krista is passionate about connecting with high school youth especially, as that is a time when many find themselves doubting and questioning their faith. Krista will spend time building relationships across the Rio Grande Valley, planning and leading youth events throughout the summer, and learning what it means to be a Director of Christian Education in a multi-cultural setting such as this! 4 Some of the major summer activities that we are gearing up for are: Missional Youth Retreat (MYR) in Austin, Crossroads Middle School Retreat, Vacation Bible School (in multiple locations!), Glorybound, and our very own adult Spiritual Renewal Retreat in August! With all the exciting ways that God will work through Krista, Kayla, our volunteers, and myself we may not have much of a chance to sleep! If you bring us Coke and Dr. Pepper, we won t turn down, friends! As always, if you d like to participate, volunteer in any way this summer you are definitely welcome! This crazy ride that God has called us to is always more fun and more joy-filled when you are surrounded by other missionminded friends! In Christ, Brenda Segovia Director of Christian Education Rio Grande Mission Action Council (RioMAC)
