2 FROM THE PASTOR THE EYE OF THE NEEDLE I think that most of us know how the rich young man feels in today's Gospel. Yes, Jesus asks everything of us as the cost of being his disciple - but Jesus asks of us only what we have, not what we don't have. We all have talents and resources, skills and gifts that we have been given by God. And why: for the work of making the kingdom of God present here and now. To be a disciple of Christ means a reordering of our priorities, a restructuring of our days so that we make time for the things of God. Simply put, God wants our heart. These words of St. Ignatius of Loyola have always strengthened my prayer. Take Lord, and receive all my liberty, my memory, my understanding, and my entire will, all that I have and possess. You have given all to me. Now, O lord, I return it. All is yours now; dispose of it wholly according to your will. The irst part reads, Enter to Learn Christ and as you leave VC the second part reads, Leave to Serve Christ. This motto is something the faculty and staff strive to instill in students on a daily basis. The 2019 Senior class embraced the motto by adopting a new project called the Unclaimed Remains Project. Similar to a project at St. John s Cathedral, our VC Seniors began the task of fundraising to bury 19 deceased unclaimed remains from Vermilion Parish. The Seniors were able to raise enough money to provide a inal resting place for these cremated remains. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place during school mass on Friday November 9, 2018, at 7:30 am at St. Mary Magdalen Church. The public is invited to attend. An offertory collection will take place at the Mass in order to help continue this Work of Mercy on an annual basis. Burial will follow in the Old Catholic Cemetery.

5 FAREWELL DEACON DON I don t know what to say. Except that my internship is over and that I have to return to Seminary. And Goodbye. I want to mention the stories of redemption; the conversations I ve had with people undergoing trials. Also, my irst Baptisms, having close encounters with God breaking through to us in His mysterious work. Funerals, too. Being invited by people I didn t know to share in the most important moments of their lives. You saw me as more than myself, as someone who represented the love and compassion of Jesus. I want to mention the many men and women I encountered at the CSC as I sought to see the face of Christ in the poor and isolated. My heart burns with joy as I recall the time spent at VC, teaching and spending time with the extraordinarily talented (they re characters, too!) students there. The faces of the staff, who assisted and seek to care for God s holy people. The spiritual and pastoral guidance of Fr. Louis and Fr. Michael. I over low with gratitude. Sr. Carm s example of patience and stability. I don t know if I could be better prepared by a parish for a life of ministry. The parish has made me a part of your community, and I do feel like no matter what happens I ll have a place here. What a town! What a parish! What love God has for each of us.
