2 FROM THE PASTOR Come Follow Me. Everyone who heard Jesus was called to recognize that the time is at hand, and make a decision for or against his message. Everyone who accepted him was called to learn a new way of living, a new way of hoping, a new way of understanding life and even death itself. Some were invited not just to live in that way, but to become his follower in full-time ministry. These people shared not just Jesus message, but his mission journey. They gave up their ordinary occupations to go with him and learn what it meant to continue his mission. They knew the risks; namely, that accepting the invitation to follow in this way would cost them their lives, sometimes in martyrdom, always in learning to give everything they had and were. It is simply a question of allowing ourselves to be so in luenced by Jesus that his vision colors everything else. This Gospel also calls us to prayerfully ponder our Christian vocation and to pray particularly for those who may be called to leave everything behind to dedicate themselves to a lifetime of spreading the Gospel. I will be out of town this week, making my annual retreat. I ask for your prayers during this retreat, and assure you of my own. 5 CENTENNIAL A STEWARSDSHIP REFLECTION The irst disciples of Jesus in today s Gospel left their work and their daily routines to follow him. The good steward inds ways to be removed from a comfortable existence or daily routine to serve the Lord. What comforts do we need to sacri ice in order to be better stewards of God s mercy, God s compassion, God s hospitality? CENTENNIAL INDULGENCE A Centennial Indulgence will be granted by Pope Francis and can be gained throughout this Centennial Year by all who visit the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist and pray the Centennial Prayer. CENTENNIAL SIGNS A limited number of Centennial Yard Signs are available at the church of ice for those who would like to pick CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING TAKING A PRO-LIFE STAND The U.S. Supreme Court legalized abortion in the infamous Roe v. Wade decision on January 22, Lafayette Physicians, led by Dr. Zerben Bienvenu, signed a resolution stating their opposition to abortion and their resolve to preserve human life. We maintain that life DOES exist before birth. As physicians, we intend to ful ill our commitment to preserve that life. The Diocese of Lafayette continues to respect, protect, and serve life from conception to natural death. Human dignity must be respected always. Catholic social teaching is clear: Every type of discrimination, whether social or cultural, whether based on sex, race, color, social condition, language or religion, is to be overcome and eradicated as contrary to God s intent Gaudium et Spes, Constitution on Church in the Modern World.
